After Salomon had finished the paintings and entrusted them to a friend for safekeeping she was captured by the Nazis and sent to Auschwitz where she was gassed soon after her arrival. Espinosa J. Manuel Translation Introduction Notes
First Expedition of Vargas into New Mexico 1692 Coronado Cuarto Centennial Publications Volume X
Albuquerque NM: University of New Mexico Press 1940. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. xi 319 pp including index. Frontis portrait of Governor Vargas. Original burgundy cloth stamped in guilt. Lower corners and spine ends bumped small spot of discoloration on rear board. Binding tight and square text and endpapers unmarked. Some pages unopened. No dust jacket. Seven important documents with a scholarly introduction. Don Diego de Vargas Zapata Lujan Ponce de Leon was born to a family of conquerors whose history reflected much of the history of Spain. Lost to Spain and the Church since the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 New Mexico was believed to contain untold riches and minerals. Vargas was appointed Governor of New Mexico in 1690 and was determined to reconquer the lost territory. How he accomplished this is told here in documents - reports and letters - signed by Vargas himself and by his lieutenants and associates. Many of these had never before been published -almost none of them in English translation. Steck: Spanish Borderlands 76. University of New Mexico Press hardcover books
