‎Charters and the Use of the Written Word in Medieval Society
‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2000 Hardcover. XII 254 p., incl. 1 table, 165 x 245 mm, Languages: English, Fine copy. Including an index. ISBN 9782503507712.‎

‎This volume contains the proceedings of two gatherings held in 1999: a symposium on medieval literacy, Charters: the Development of Writing in Medieval Society held on 29 April 1999 in Utrecht, and three consecutive sessions on Charters and the Use of the Written Word during the International Medieval Congress at Leeds on 12 July 1999. The subject of these gatherings was the development of writing in medieval society. There have been periods of growth and of decrease in the quantity of writing produced in the medieval centuries. The present volume is concerned rather with qualitative developments. Which developments can be distinguished in the roles played by writing in medieval societies? In which fields was writing used, and by whom? Why did these changes take place? When attempting to answer these questions, the scholar confronts basic questions about the sources at ones disposal. Why were documents written? Why were they preserved and in what form? As a consequence, the contributions are clearly source-oriented. Charters, the sources to which most attention is devoted, have been continuously present throughout the Middle Ages. Moreover, they had an impact on most layers of society. The auxiliary science of diplomatics has helped scholars understand many historical problems; in this volume it is applied to the study of writing and the uses of writing.‎

‎Epigraphic Literacy and Christian Identity Modes of Written Discourse in the Newly Christian European North.
‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2012 Hardcover. VI 273 p., 39 b/w ill., 15 b/w line art, 156 x 234 mm, Languages: English. Fine copy. Including an index. ISBN 9782503542942.‎

‎This collection of nine essays deals with the role of epigraphic literacy within the newly introduced Christian culture and the developing tradition of literacy in Northern Europe.
This volume examines the role of epigraphic literacy within the newly introduced Christian culture and the developing tradition of literacy in Northern Europe during the Viking Age and the High Middle Ages. The epigraphic material under scrutiny here originates from Scandinavia and North-West Russia ? two regions that were converted to Christianity around the turn of the first millennium. Besides traditional categories of epigraphic sources, such as monumental inscriptions on durable materials, the volume is concerned with more casual inscriptions on less permanent materials. The first part of the book discusses a form of monumental epigraphic literacy manifested on Scandinavian rune stones, with a particular focus on their Christian connections. The second part examines exchanges between Christian culture and ephemeral products of epigraphic literacy, as expressed through Scandinavian rune sticks, East Slavonic birchbark documents and church graffiti. The essays look beyond the traditional sphere of parchment literacy and the Christian discourse of manuscript sources in order to explore the role of epigraphic literacy in the written vernacular cultures of Scandinavia and North-West Russia.‎

‎This is the sixth and final part of the Survey of Manuscripts Illuminated in the British Isles, in which the author has made a perceptive selection of the rich and varied illuminated books of the 15th century, many previously unstudied, and has catalogued these in the greatest detail. This is the sixth and final part of the Survey of Manuscripts Illuminated in the British Isles. The author has made a perceptive selection of the rich and varied illuminated books of the 15th century, many previously unstudied, and has catalogued these in the greatest detail. She includes many surviving manuscripts of the period which contain the finest works of art, and also shows some of the illustrations to the great examples of Middle English literature such as Chaucer, Lydgate and Gower which will be of particular interest to English scholars. Among the masterpieces of the period are liturgical works: the Carmelite, Abingdon and Sherbone Missals, the Bedford Hours and the Lovell Lectionary. Besides these, medical, botanical and topographical books are represented as well as works of chivalry and chronicles of the Kings of England. Dr Scott describes workshop practice and the way in which different craftsmen contributed to the same book. She traces the development from monastic to commercial shop practice (especially in London) in the period preceding the advent of printing. These manuscripts provide insights into the 15th-century view of court, church, ordinary ways of life and working methods, making this final volume in the Survey of English manuscripts a book of exceptional interest and value for historians of art and society.‎

‎UNDERSTANDING ROMAN INSCRIPTIONS‎

‎Light foxing to top of textblock. Light shelfwear to DJ. ; Some 300,000 inscriptions are known to survive from the Roman world. More than a thousand new ones are discovered each year. Such inscriptions can confirm or amplify our knowledge of great events portrayed in literary sources. They also provide a direct link to the lives and occupations of a vast number of ordinary people who have no place in the pages of the historians and whose existence is otherwise unrecorded. In Understanding Roman Inscriptions, Lawrence Keppie introduces the nonspecialist reader to the subject of inscriptions. He gives an account of context and history of inscriptions and explains their significance as a resource for anyone interested in the world of the Romans. For each inscription cited, Keppie provides the original Latin, an English translation and commentary on the inscription's significance in the everyday life of the Romans. Illustrated with eighty-five photographs, Understanding Roman Inscriptions provides a fascinating introduction to the most important source for the history and organization of the Roman Empire. ; American Moment; 160 pages‎

‎Very minor shelfwear and scuffing.
