Ce mariage auquel les parents ont donn� leur consentement a �t� arrang� par un agent et enregistr� par la police locale. Il ne dure que le temps du s�jour et la jeune fille pourra par la suite se marier avec un Japonais. Cette pratique peut para�tre curieuse mais elle est alors courante au Japon m�me si elle s'av�re co�teuse pour l'�tranger. Le mariage est arrang� par un agent enregistr� par la police locale et ne durera que le temps du s�jour. C'est une pratique �trange mais bien commune au Japon d'alors. Pierre Loti va alors vivre avec sa jeune �pouse dans une petite maison japonaise en plein pays des fleurs et des lanternes fr�quentant les maisons de th� et les f�tes des templesen compagnie de � fr�re Yves � et des mousm�s qui � l'exemple de Mme Chrysanth�me ont fond� avec des Europ�ens des m�nages �ph�m�res. Mais Pierre Loti s'y ennuie et d�couvre vite que l'amour de Madame Chrysanth�me ne repose que sur un contrat. Comment aurait-il pu en �tre autrement . Pierre Loti par ses nombreux textes a fait d�couvrir le monde � ses lecteurs comme nul autre avant lui. Ici avec Madame Chrysanth�me il s'attaque au Japon et � ses moeurs si �trang�res pour les Europ�ens de l'�poque. Entre faux carnet de voyage et faux roman de moeurs ce texte de Pierre Loti est un peu tout � la fois. aucune aventure r�elle � suivre sinon celle d'un mariage insens� et condamn� d'avance � l'autre bout du monde. Mais encore comme l'auteur le signale lui-m�me le roman parle avant tout de lui du Japon et de l'effet qu'a porduit ce pays sur lui. Il s'agit donc avant tout d'impressions peintes : des tableaux d�crits une galerie de portraits des sc�nes de vie � Diou-djen-dji. Et la ville est bien l'un des personnages principaux de ce r�cit : le Nagasaki d'avant la Seconde Guerre mondiale aujourd'hui compl�tement disparu et que le t�moignage de Loti restitue en partie pour rappel la ville de Nagasaki a �t� compl�tement d�truite en 1945 par une bombe atomique am�ricaine. Un certain nombre de personnages y sont bien d�crits tel Okan�-San et sa famile : son cousin pauvre le Djin 415 le plus rapide des hommes-coureurs tra�nant des petits chars et voiturant des particuliers pour de l'argent la m�re d'Okan�-San Madame Renoncule son petit fr�re Bambou et aussi toutes ses soeurs. Il y a M. Kangourou l'entremetteur de mariage M.
