New York 1830. Very good. Broadside form approximately 12.5 x 8.25 inches. Formerly mounted with some adhesive remnants at top edge. Light creasing at lower edge. Faint foxing. A subscription form for the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company which sought to attract colonists to land granted to Lorenzo de Zavala Joseph Vehlein and David G. Burnet in southeast Texas in the early 1830s. The present form is completed for one of the principal land owners in the scheme Lorenzo de Zavala and is signed by him on the verso. Zavala went on to play a major role in the Texas Revolution and became the first Vice President of the Republic of Texas. "The Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company was founded in New York on October 16 1830 for the purpose of colonizing the lands assigned to the empresarios Joseph Vehlein David G. Burnet and Lorenzo de Zavala. The colonization contracts covered an area in East Texas lying east of the San Jacinto River and south of a line running twenty leagues north of Nacogdoches 3743163 acres. The company a real-estate promotion firm with agents land counselors surveyors and salesmen did not own land itself but sold scrip that allowed the settlers simply to move into the area allotted to the three empresarios. There the settlers had to complete all requirements of the Mexican colonization law before they could obtain title to land" - Texas State Handbook Online. "The certificate lists by date the four grants there were two grants to Vehlein to the three empresarios and gives the boundaries of the resulting tract. At the end is a provision that the location of the land is to be under the supervision of the agent 'residing on the land' of the Trustees who on surrender of the scrip reports to the Commissioner appointed by the Government who issues titles 'Subject to the payments required by the Laws of the State'" - Streeter. This covers the family life and legal status of a wide range of tradesmen and blue collar workers: gladiators scribes bookkeepers musicians physicians and surgeons comedians artisans tutors gardeners cooks midwives teachers and fishermen. There are plates of musical instruments ball players ships jewelry and a wine cellar. The text draws on ancient medieval and contemporary sources. The distinguished doctor Fabricus ab Aquapendente contributed a short essay on food addressed to the Augusburg merchant and historian Marcus Welser. A learned antiquary born in Padua in 1591 Pignoria was educated by the Jesuits and a canonry of Treviso was conferred upon him by cardinal Fr. Barberini. A relatively early and extensive phrenological reading from the hand of one of the great Fowler brothers himself; besides the descriptive analysis in manuscript the numerical measurements of the various traits are given in autograph ink in the margin of the printed pamphlet. Despite the Philadelphia Phrenological Athenaeum imprint to the printed chart the reading may likely have been delivered at the Fowler New York studio where Lorenzo had first established his business. Surviving this ordal he followed the coast from Los Angeles to San Jose and then to the diggings on the Merced River. Complete as issued with 198 pp 79 lithographed plates 23 views 6 mammals 5 birds 21 reptiles 3 fish 21 botanical plates and large folding map. Original brown cloth with chipping and tears to spine cloth. Spine cracked at pp 174/175; intermittent foxing primarily affecting the title page occasional text margins and about 20 plates mainly mammals birds reptiles and botanicals as opposed to the views which are generally clean. Map has a few splits at the intersections and one closed tear that has been repaired on the verso. This was the final expedition made by the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers in connection with the Mexican War. In addition to Sitgreaves the expedition party included J.G. Parke Richard H. Kern as draughtsman S.W. Woodhouse as physician and naturalist and Antoine Leroux as guide. Its purpose was to determine whether the Zuni River actually emptied into the Colorado and to examine the territory en route. The party followed the Zuni from Zuni Pueblo in western New Mexico to the Little Colorado then continued west reaching the Colorado near the Mojave villages and then proceeding south to Camp Yuma and San Diego. VG. **Alla seconda pubblicazione Š spillato il biglietto di visita del Comm. Ing. Lorenzo Allievi, "una delle figure pi— eminenti della tecnica italiana", di fama mondiale per i suoi studi sul cosiddetto "colpo d'ariete", di grande utilit… per la realizzazione di impianti idroelettrici. La pubblicazione relativa al Iø salto (provincia di Aquila, deviazione nel Comune di Popoli e centrale in territorio Tre Monti) non Š datata, ma l'impianto entr• in funzione nel 1907; quella che descrive l'impianto del 2ø salto, entrato in funzione nel 1912 e con centrale in territorio di Piano d'Orte, Š datata 1913.

LA CATTEDRALE DI S. LORENZO.
Astuccio editoriale in tela (cm. 52x36,5) contenente 4 cc.nn. (frontespizio, testo, descrizione delle tavole) e 6 magnifiche litografie acquerellate a mano: dedicate alla cattedrale di S. Lorenzo, il più insigne manumento sacro della città di Genova con ben otto secoli di storia, sono state realizzate dal pittore ligure Rino Valido (nato a Varazze nel 1947) di cui viene data una breve biografia in un dépliant allegato. Le bellissime tavole raffigurano particolari della cattedrale: Cristo in cattedra benedicente nella vasta lunetta centrale - episodio della Visitazione, il secondo delle sette storie della Vergine - i grandi leoni dello scultore Carlo Rubatto - formella con la figura della Vergine col Bambino - particolare di un affresco, una delle poche pitture superstiti tra quelle che nel medio evo dovevano rivestire le pareti della cattedrale - sontuoso baldacchino della cappella”. Come precisato, le litografie sono state “incise su pietra, acquerellate a mano, tirate in 60 esemplari con prova e tiratura su torchi a mano, pietre biffate dopo la stampa”, tutte firmate dall’artista. Esemplare ben conservato.

In-4 p., tela editoriale, sovracoperta figurata a colori, pp. (6),297, ben illustrato da 51 immagini in b.n. nel testo e 100 tavole f.t., in b.n. e a colori (foto e disegni). “I precedenti archeologici e le premesse storiche della basilica - L’architettura - I mosaici e le pitture”. In questa importante monografia vengono resi noti gli studi condotti dopo il restauro degli edifici laurenziani compiuti intorno agli anni '40. Pagine leggerm. ingiallite per la qualità della carta, altrimenti ben conservato.
