The first American edition from the 13th French in blindstamped and gilt green cloth wear and bumping to corners but generally very good. With 10 tipped in plate including the frontispiece. Tissue guard to the frontis is torn out. Translated by the noted abolitionist and activist Charlotte Forten 1837-1914. Forten grew up in relative privilege in Philadelphia was the only African-American at Higginson Grammar School in Salem MA where she later became a member of the Anti-Slavery society where she met Emerson Sumner and Garrison who later published her poetry. She was the first black teacher to join the Sea Island's mission during the Civil War - an episode made into a film in the 1980s - where she met Robert Gould of the 54th Massachusetts and Thomas Wentworth Higginson of the 1st South Carolina the two prominent all African-American regiments. Her activism and reality were difficult bedfellows during this time which she wrote of in Atlantic Monthly as Forten as evidenced by her translating this very volume was steeped in European literature whereas her pupils were often Gullah speakers. Forten's journals were published posthumously to great acclaim and enduring interest. This is the first USA edition. Size: Octavo 8vo. Text is clean and unmarked. Quantity Available: 1. Original photograph woodburytype 125 x 87 cm with 7 pages text folio. - Paris-Theatre No. 249. �mile Erckmann 20 May 1822 - 14 March 1899 was a French writer strongly associated with the region of Alsace-Lorraine. Almost all of his works were written jointly with Alexandre Chatrian under the name Erckmann-Chatrian. He was born in Phalsbourg Moselle in Lorraine and matured there. His mother died in 1832 and he was sent to boarding school. He obtained his baccalaureat at Nancy before studying law at Paris from 1842. His first published work was Du recrutement militaire "On military recruitment" 1843. Two years later he failed his third year of law and returned to Phalsbourg ill with typhoid where in the spring of 1847 he made the acquaintance of Alexandre Chatrian a teacher. They became friends and spent their summer holidays together. While staying at Paris Erckmann witnessed the Revolution of 1848: inspired they founded a political society in Phalsbourg and a short-lived newsletter at Strasbourg. Their politics were republican and nationalistic. At the beginning of the 1850s they began publishing in Le D�mocrate du Rhin expecting quick success but after several years they became disillusioned. A play performed at Strasbourg in 1850 L'Alsace en 1814 was banned after just two performances. Erckmann moved to Rosny-sous-Bois and resumed his study of law in 1854. His father Jean-Philippe died in February 1858. Charles-Louis-Gratien-Alexandre Chatrian 18 December 1826 - 3 September 1890 was a French writer associated with the region of Alsace-Lorraine. He was born at Abreschviller Moselle in the locality known as le Grand Soldat or Soldatenthal in German. From 1842 he studied in Phalsbourg German Pfalzburg. During 1843 his father's glassworks went bankrupt and the next year he went to Belgium for two years to earn a living as an accountant after which he returned to Phalsbourg as a teacher. He met Erckmann in 1847 and they became friends spending the summer in the Vosges. While staying at Paris Erckmann witnessed the Revolution of 1848: inspired they founded a political club at Phalsbourg and a short-lived newsletter at Strasbourg.
