The work is a semi-autobiographical novel that follows Philip Carey a young boy with a clubfoot and sensitive disposition as he becomes an orphan is raised by his rigid uncle and ultimately moves abroad in search of meaning and fulfillment. His journey is marked by intense emotional struggles--including a particularly volatile relationship with a waitress named Mildred--which ultimately lead him to seek contentment closer to home. Though now considered one of the most influential novels of the 20th century Maugham's work did not meet with immediate success. As DNB tells us "The novel was coolly received in Britain and America and became a best-seller only after an effusive review by the influential American critic and distinguished novelist Theodore Dreiser in the 'New Republic' 25 December 1915 in which he described the book as of 'the utmost importance' and its author as a 'great artist.'" The author's inscription on the half-title page to Doubleday editor-in-chief Malcolm Johnson reads "Which was written with blood tears / For Malcolm from WSM" William Somerset Maugham. The accompanying letter from Randolph Schwabe instructing Johnson on where to put his illustrations refers to page numbers in a publisher's proof or previous edition of the book the pagination not aligning with this 1936 edition.<br /> <br /> Doubleday were Maugham's American publishers since the 1920s and Nelson Doubleday owned the French Bindery as an in-house deluxe bindery. Malcolm Johnson 1903-1958 M.I.T. class of 1923 was a long-time editor at Doubleday Doran one of the original Baker Street Irregulars and later an executive at Van Nostrand. The emphasis was on the shedding of the clutter of a conventional religious upbringing to free the individual's spirit" ODNB. It became a best-seller after an effusive review by the American novelist Theodore Dreiser. This British edition was printed from the first issue American plates retaining the misprint reading "help" instead of "helped" on page 257 line 4. Octavo. Original blue cloth spine and front cover lettered in gilt front cover stamped with Maugham's device in gilt rear cover with publisher's device in blind. Housed in custom green cloth chemise and slipcase. Bookplate of one Eugene Katz by Carl Stephen Junge 1880-1934; ownership stamp of one G. S. Ellison on front free endpaper.
