‎Garden City N.Y.: Doubleday & Company 1949. First American edition. 1 vols. 12mo. Black cloth. Upper cover slightly stained else very good in soiled and chipped dust jacket. First American edition. 1 vols. 12mo. Inscribed to the wife of New Yor Post columnist Leonard Lyons who was for many years one of New York's most prominent journalists. His column in the New York Post "The Lyons' Den" was widely read and immensely popular during the many years since its commencement in 1934. Unlike many of his colleagues however Lyons was highly respected for his fairness and highmindedness. According to Ralph Blumenthal in STORK CLUB Boston 2000 "Lyons didn't believe in writing about romances and divorces. Nor it was said did he ever violate a confidence . He corresponded with world leaders and literary giants . " p. 131; and he counted among his friends celebrities as diverse as Ernest Hemingway at whose funeral Lyons was pallbearer Marilyn Monroe and Orson Welles.

Maugham has inscribed the flyleaf: "For Sylvia Lyons / W. ‎Sheppey: A Play in Three Acts.‎

‎London: William Heinemann Ltd. 1933. First edition of Maugham's final play. Octavo original cloth. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "The author's last play for Elsie Tritton W. Somerset Maugham." The recipient Elsie Tritton was a noted collector and friend of Maugham‘s who introduced him to Alan Searle. A younger man from the London slum area of Bermondsey Searle had previously embarked upon an affair with the writer Lytton Strachey. Maugham began a relationship with him after his companion Gerald Haxton died in 1944. In 1962 Maugham attempted to adopt Searle as his son and heir when he disowned his daughter after a financial dispute but the adoption was annulled. Following Maugham’s death in 1962 Searle inherited £50000 the contents of his Villa La Mauresque Maugham’s manuscripts and his revenue from copyrights for 30 years. Very good in a very good dust jacket. Maugham's final play Sheppey is the dramatic story of hairdresser Joseph "Sheppey" Miller who after working at the same establishment for 15 years wins a subsidiary prize in the Irish Lottery of £8500. The play was written in 1932 and first produced at the Wyndham's Theatre London on September 14 1933 with a cast that included Ralph Richardson then aged 31 and Laura Cowie. After the production of Sheppey Maugham announced publicly that he would write no more plays and kept to his word until his death in 1965. He did however write numerous other short stories novels and articles. William Heinemann Ltd. hardcover‎

A collection of short excerpts from the notebooks that Maugham kept during much of his life with entries ranging from 1892 to 1944 and covering numerous countries.

Maugham had a keen power of observation writing vividly about the people he met and the places he visited. For instance here's an entry from 1917 when he visited Russia during the revolution and met Alexander Kerensky: "He came into the room followed by his A.D.C. aide de camp with a quick step and gave me a firm hasty mechanical handshake. He seemed fearfully on edge. Sitting down and talking incessantly he took hold of a cigarette box and played with it restlessly locking and unlocking it opening and shutting it turning it round and round. His speech was rapid and emphatic; and his nervousness made me nervous too.His conversation did not suggest a man of wide culture hardly even a man of general education. His personality had no magnetism." pages 186-187.

CONDITION: The book is Fine the acetate dust jacket has some nicks and tears and the slipcase is scuffed edge-worn and has some flaking along the opening.
