The true First Edition published on 18 April 1944. The First American Trade Edition was published two days later and the First English Edition was not published until July 1944. Number 158 of 750 numbered copies SIGNED on the limitation page by the author of this modern classic. Cukor was originally hired to direct but was fired because of creative differences Cukor and Maugham were also close friends. The blue boards are clean and fresh with gilt lettering and design on front board and spine. Tips still pretty sharp. Unmarked tight and square. Price intact jacket has light to moderate wear but no tears or chips. Two or three very small spots teadrop on jacket and 1/2" closed tear on rear panel. A great association copy. In mylar. . Somerset Maugham’s original ink sketch showing his dust jacket design concept for his greatest novel The Razor’s Edge executed on a blank Western Union telegram form which was followed by the publisher pretty much to the letter. A striking piece of literary history demonstrating that the author’s intentions for the book were honored from the text to the jacket itself including his signature Moroccan symbol used on nearly all his books including reprints; and an interesting example of a major author’s notion of self-representation. In his autobiographical book The Summing Up Maugham wrote of the symbol: “My father took it into his head to build a house to live in during the summer… He ordered a great quantity of glass on which he had engraved a sign against the Evil Eye which he had found in Morocco and which the reader may see on the cover of this book." In near fine condition. The entire piece measures 8.25 inches by 6 inches. An exceptional piece of literary history. Black boards lightly soiled and shelfworn with wear along edges and spine ends. Gilt on spine dulled. Internally end-pages age-toned with a previous owenrs inscription to 1st free end-page and an embossed stamp to half-title page. The title page is signed/inscribed by the author crossing out his printed name. Otherwise paper is slightly age-toned throughout but clean. The binding is tight and hinges intact. Inscribed to William Barbour who worked for the American Federation for the Blind lining up authors to read all or parts of their books for the Talking Books program.
