Contemporary blue morocco by The French Binders spine lettered in gilt spine covers and turn-ins ruled in gilt marbled endpapers top edge gilt others untrimmed. With frontispiece and 23 collotype plates by Schwabe; title page printed in black & bisque. Slight rubbing at head of joint ends else near-fine. First illustrated edition signed limited issue the copy of the publisher Nelson Doubleday number 1 of 751 copies signed by the illustrator and the author specially bound. An excellent association copy: Doubleday had inherited Maugham as an author when his company merged with Maugham's former publisher George H. Doran in 1926. Maugham became a great friend of Doubleday and his wife. In 1940 Doubleday built Maugham a house with a separate writing cottage on his estate in South Carolina where Maugham spent most of the years of World War II. It was there that Maugham finished The Razor's Edge in which it has been claimed that Doubleday serves as a model for the character of Gray Maturin. At Doubleday's funeral Maugham spoke of his "great power of affection and need for affection. For thirty years Nelson Doubleday gave me his constant and affectionate friendship. The recollection of it is a treasure that can never be taken away from me" cited in Ted Morgan Maugham p. 522. Of Human Bondage was first published in 1915 and Maugham contributed a new foreword for this handsome illustrated edition. Randolph Schwabe 1885-1948 "was a draughtsmen painter and etcher who was the Slade Professor of Fine Art at University College London from 1930 until his death. One of 500 copies signed by W. Somerset Maugham on the front free endpaper. In fine condition. Accompanied by the original accompanying program which is in very good condition. The program contains a brief description of the original autograph manuscript which notes that it is contained in 16 notebooks written on the recto of each leaf begun in 1911 and finished in 1914. Maugham's longest and most ambitious novel in which 'fact and fiction are inextricably mixed' draws heavily upon the author's own youth with circumstances and names scarcely altered" Parker 63. "As early as 1911 Maugham had retired temporarily from the theatre to work on his long novel Of Human Bondage. He was to correct the proofs under the admiring eyes of Desmond MacCarthy in a small hotel at Malo near Dunkirk; the two men were drivers in an ambulance unit for which they had volunteered at the outbreak of war in 1914. Of Human Bondage was published in 1915. It was less noticed in wartime London than in New York where Theodore Dreiser reviewed it with enthusiasm. It remains Maugham's most impressive literary work and by the time of his death 1965 was said to have sold ten million copies" DNB.
