I wish the end would come. Poor darling old Willie is so miserable and unhappy." Together with George Cukor's 2 page reply dated February 6 1965. This is Cukor's retained copy which he has signed. Cukor comments on his film "My Fair Lady" as well as pending Disney film "Peter Pan" which he never worked on. Searle intimate friend of W. Somerset Maugham. In his last years Maugham adopted Searle as his son in order to ensure that he would inherit his estate a move hotly contested by his daughter Liza and her husband Lord Glendevon and which exposed Maugham to much public ridicule. Additionally there is a letter on Villa Mauresque Cap Ferrat Riviera letterhead. No date circa 1930. Written to Iva Decker a Chicago Bookseller during the 1930's. It reads "Dear Miss Decker. His column in the New York Post "The Lyons' Den" was widely read and immensely popular during the many years since its commencement in 1934. Unlike many of his colleagues however Lyons was highly respected for his fairness and highmindedness. According to Ralph Blumenthal in STORK CLUB Boston 2000 "Lyons didn't believe in writing about romances and divorces. Nor it was said did he ever violate a confidence . He corresponded with world leaders and literary giants . First U.S. edition. Maugham made revisions in the text of the American edition in some instances considerably expanding it. Generally regarded as occult fantasy this novel is actually science fiction. The villain Oliver Haddo modeled upon Aleister Crowley studies the occult ancient alchemy and modern biological science and successfully creates life. Remains a very readable science fiction horror novel. "THE MAGICIAN 1908 presents a savage portrait of Aleister Crowley easily recognized as Haddo a student of occultism who forces a young woman to marry him by casting a glamour upon her and who eventually sacrifices her in order to create a homunculus." - Clute and Grant eds The Encyclopedia of Fantasy 1997 p. 634. Crowley with whom Maugham once roomed in Paris elected to be perversely flattered by the grotesque characterization calling it "an amusing hotchpot of stolen goods."
