1909 1908 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A smartly bound three volume set of the French writer Guy de Maupassant's works. 'Fort Comme la Mort' is about Olivier Bertin a painter who is at the height of his career a bachelor who has become a prized guest in Parisian society. 'Notre Coeur' was Maupassant's last finished book before his death. It is a physiological look at Andre Mariolle's life and attitude towards love. 'Boule de Suif' is a short story arguably Maupassant's most famous. It is a sympathetic portray of the mistreatment of a prostitute by the bourgeoisie. With some of his correspondence included to the volume with 'Boule de Suif'. Guy de Maupassant is best known for his prolific writing of short stories. He was a protege of Gustave Flaubert and the naturalist themes of pessimistic looks on human life which was popular among French writers at the time is prevalent through his work. His other novels include 'Une Vie' 'Bel-Ami' 'Mont-Oriol' and 'Pierre et Jean'. With a bookplate to the front pastedowns belonging to Rosa Kraft. Condition: In the original half crushed morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally smart. Some light discolouration and marking to the leather with the marking being heavier to the rear board of 'Notre Coeur'. Light rubbing to the joints to the raised bands to the extremities and to the head of the spine of 'Fort Comme la Mort'. Minor rubbing to the boards of 'Fort Comme la Mort' and to the front board of 'Norte Coeur'. The odd spot to the fore edge. Bookplate to the front pastedowns. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright with scattered spots predominately to the first and last few pages of each volume. Overall Condition: Near Fine. 1909 hardcover
