Very good copy in fine binding. Bibl. Rif.: Morazzoni 229, Lapiccirella "Illustrati Veneziani" n.163. 515/13.‎

‎Railroad Recollections‎

‎Signed, without inscription, by author upon title page. [4], 110 pages. Index. Map endpapers. Profusely illustrated with sepia-tone reproductions of archival photos. "Charles Heels worked for the railways from 1912 until his retirement in 1960. Over the years he collected and recorded the history of his vocation. From early in the twentieth century he collected and took photographs related to his special field. The result is that the only copy of many of the photographs of the early days of railroading in Canada have been preserved in his collection. This book illustrates over 100 of these photos and records the history of many of the events which make up the history of railroading in Canada. Heels worked out of Lindsay, Ontario where he was responsible for freight cars in the district between Toronto, Belleville, Peterborough and points north and east. He thus needed to know all of the workings of the railway in central Ontario for almost half a century" - dust jacket. Writing blacked out in lower left corner of title page, otherwise book clean, bright and unmarked with very light wear. Binding tight. Moderate wear to dust jacket which is now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. A quality copy of this important Ontario railroad history. Book‎

‎Selections from the writings of Fenelon. With a memoir of his life. By a lady.‎

‎Boston: Hilliard Gray and Wilkins 1831. 8vo 18.4 cm; 7.25". 304 pp.

Fénelon 1651–1715 a French theologian and archbishop had a tense and complex relationship with the Church hierarchy because of his writings. His office in Cambray was one of the richest benefices in France and upon his banishment from the court of Louis XIV for the publication of his Maxims of the Saints he dedicated himself fully to his position making himself “in all that he did the perfect churchman” Encyclopaedia Britannica 253.
The "lady" was Eliza L. Cabot Follen 1787–1860 the Boston-born author translator and abolitionist. She used her own translation — "a free one; but sedulous care has been taken never to depart from the spirit of the author" v — and one of her concerns in selection is to de-Catholicize the archbishop allowing his more universal appreciation — for as she says his "writings necessarily contain many things that could not be acceptable to Christians of all denominations and have therefore been uniformly omitted" v.
Fénelon's appearance in Follen's selective epitome would surely have amused him and it pleased the book-buying public: This is the work’s third edition.
Provenance: A note states that "this book belonged to Grandmother Dyer: Ann Eliza Morse"; Charles Dyer Norton has also signed an endpaper in ink.

American Imprints 7028. On Fénelon see: Encyclopaedia Britannica 11th ed. X 252–54. ‎AVANTURES DE TELEMAQUE. FILS D'ULYSSE. OU SUITE DU QUATRIEME LIVRE DE L'ODYSSEE D'HOMERE. TOME I & II. ONE VOLUME‎

‎A La Haye: Chez Adrien Motjens 1705. Full Leather. Good binding. An early copy of the Avantures de Telemaque Fils d'Ulysse or the "Adventures of Telemachus son of Ulysses" published six years after the First. Written by Francois Fenelon while he was tutor of Louis Duke of Burgundy. The work served as a didactic tool for the future ruler the young 'Fils de France' as well as a not-so-subtle critique of absolute monarchy and King Louis XIV. Literary historian Jean-Claude Bonnet is quoted as stating that the Avantures is "the true key to the museum of the eighteenth century imagination;" an instant bestseller Telemaque went through numerous editions. Text in French. Two volumes in one; additional title page for Tome II; pagination and collation reset. Title pages in black and red; with seventeen engraved plates throughout. Some offsetting to the type of signature Bb suggesting the leaves were sewn in before they were dry; previous owners' names in ink on the rear flyleaves and first title page; lacking endpapers. 26 272 2 328 pp. Full leather with raised bands leather label and tooling in gilt in compartments. Good binding. Chez Adrien Motjens unknown books‎
