Gell Mann M.
A Schematic Model of Baryons and Mesons in Physics Letters 8 Number 3 1 February 1964 pp. 214-215
FIRST EDITION OF MURRAY GELL-MANN'S SEMINAL PAPER POSITING THE IDEA OF 'QUARKS' INSIDE THE ATOMIC NUCLEUS. Bound full volume. Gell-Mann took nearly a year to write this short Nobel Prize winning paper and yet in it three quarks later named 'up' 'down' and 'strange' "explained phenomena that theorists had been puzzling over for years" Crease The Second Creation 283. "A landmark in contemporary physics the eight-paragraph note is a model of scientific prose: brief logical achingly clear so tightly and modestly drawn that its full scope may elude the reader. In the first line the author sets forth his intention: "If we assume that the strong interactions of baryons and mesons are correctly described in terms of the broken eightfold way we are tempted to look for some fundamental explanation of the situation." And then he did just that. Gell-Mann's paper "explained how various combinations of three particles from a triplet could produce baryons such as protons and neutrons while two members from the triplet could combine to form a meson the most famous example at the time being the pi meson or pion. Maintaining standard electric charges required a fourth particle for this approach to work Gell-Mann noted in his paper. But "a simpler and more elegant scheme can be constructed if we allow non-integral values for the charges" he wrote. "We then refer to the members . of the triplet as 'quarks.'" Gell-Mann "proposed the quark hypothesis to account for the explosion of subatomic particles discovered in accelerator and cosmicray experiments during the 1950s and early 1960s. Over a hundred new particles most of them strongly interacting and very short-lived had been observed. These particles called hadrons are not elementary; they possess a definite size and internal structure and most can be transformed from one state into another. "The quark hypothesis suggested that different combinations of three quarks-the up u down d and strange s quarks-and their antiparticles could account for all of the hadrons then known. Each quark has an intrinsic spin of 1/2 unit and is presumed to be elementary like the electron. So far quarks appear to have no size or internal structure and thus represent the smallest known constituents of matter. To explain the observed spectrum of hadrons quarks had to have electric charges that are fractions of the electron charge. The u quark has charge 2/3 while the d and s quarks have charges 1/3 in units where the electron charge is 1. "The observed hadron spectrum agreed remarkably well with the expected states formed from combinations of three quarks or a quark-antiquark pair. Quarks also seemed to form a counterpart to the other class of elementary particles the leptons which then included the electron e and muon both with unit charge and their companion chargeless neutrinos e and . The leptons do not feel the strong interaction but they do participate in the electromagnetic interactions and the weak interaction responsible for radioactive decays. They have the same spin as the quarks and also have no discernible size or internal structure" Carithers & Grannis SLAC: Discovery of the Top Quark 6. In 1969 Gell-Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics "for his contributions and discoveries concerning the classification of elementary particles and their interactions" Nobel Media. CONDITION & DETAILS: Complete volume containing Vol. 8 Nos 1-5 Jan.-March 1964. Amsterdam: North-Holland Publishing Company 1964. Gell Mann M. Murray; Low Francis WITH Sternheimer R. WITH Schwinger Julian; Feshbach Herman
Bound States in Quantum Field Theory Gell-Mann pp. 350-355 WITH On Nuclear Quadrupole Moments Sternheimer pp. 244-254 WITH On a Phenomenological Neutron-Proton Interaction Schwinger pp. 194-204 in Physical Review 84 Number 2 15 October 1951
FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF 3 SIGNIFICANT PAPERS: GELL-MANN & LOW'S THEOREM STERNHEIMER ON SHIELDING & ANTI-SHIELDING & SCHWINGER ON PHENOMENOLOGICAL NEUTRON-PROTON INTERACTION. GELL-MANN & LOW: Tackling formalism and the bound-state problem Gell-Mann and Low's paper is Nobel Prize winner Gell-Mann's first published paper. The theorem and formal derivation they achieve is a "cornerstone in quantum field theory and zero-temperature many-body theory" Molinari Journal of Mathematics 48 2007. In quantum field theory the Gell-Mann and Low theorem "allows one to relate the ground or vacuum state of an interacting system to the ground state of the corresponding non-interacting theory. The theorem is useful because among other things by relating the ground state of the interacting theory to its non-interacting ground state it allows one to express Green's functions which are defined as expectation values of Heisenberg-picture fields in the interacting vacuum as expectation values of interaction picture fields in the non-interacting vacuum. While typically applied to the ground state the Gell-Mann and Low theorem applies to any eigenstate of the Hamiltonian. Its proof relies on the concept of starting with a non-interacting Hamiltonian and adiabatically switching on the interactions"; the proof is based on Dyson's time-ordered expansion of the propagator; a proof based on exact identities for the time propagator is here given" Wikipedia; Molinari. STERNHEIMER: Physicists knew that electrons of any given ion interacted with the quadrupolar field of the nucleus as well as with the local electrostatic potential. With respect to NMR issues though an important question remained: "What part of the energy of the system ion plus nuclear quadrupole moment plus local field depends on the orientation of the nucleus" Solid State Physics 5 347. Sternheimer was the first to study questions of this nature. Sternheimer found that "a perturbing potential whether originating within an ion or outside it polarizes the spherically symmetric complete shells of electrons. The complete shells having thus lost their spherical symmetry contribute destructively shielding or constructively antishielding to the perturbing potential at any site. The reduction or enhancement of the perturbing potential the so called Sternheimer effect could be accounted for in terms of some parameters" Dekeyser Electron Emission Spectroscopy 250. To this day the two Sternheimer shielding factors are still taken into account when core electrons are near an electric field gradient Sternheimer shielding and anti-shielding factors. One is "associated with charges which are on the atom or ion in question and one associated with more distant charges" Vij Handbook 92. SCHWINGER & FESHBACH: "This paper describes the calculations and results obtained in fitting a phenomenological interaction to the properties of the deuteron and related low energy phenomena" Schwinger and Feshbach Phys. Rev. 84 194. Together Schwinger and Feshbach "solved the problem of the deuteron ground state and numerically calculated the quadrupole moment effective range and relative probabilities for the system remaining in a D-angular momentum state as well as the cross sections for photoelectric disintegration of deuterons" Mehra Climbing the Mountain 163. While their calculations are now mainly of "historical interest only" Schwinger and Feshbach made their calculations on Harvard's first 'computing machine' - an IBM Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator/Mark I; as well they were among the first to use it ibid. That machine is now on display in Harvard's Science Center. CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Physical Society. Original wraps complete. Two nearly invisible stamp on front wrap; professionally rebacked at the spine. 4to 10.5 x 8 inches; 263 x 200mm. Near fine condition inside and out. American Physical Society paperback

Status of weak interactions.
In:: Reviews of Modern Physics Vol. 31 No. 3 July 1959. 1959. 272 x 202 mm. 4to. Pages 834-838. Entire volume: iv 1077 pp. Full orange buckram gilt spine. Ex library rubber stamps those on edges obscured. Ownership name in gilt on top cover. Very good. FIRST EDITION. Gell-Mann's paper is the last in a series presented at a Conference on Weak Interactions held at Gatlinburg Tennessee October 27-29 1958 in which Gell-Mann summarizes the current state of knowledge about weak interactions. In the 1950s physicists - using particle accelerators which fired beams of particles at stationary targets measured particles created by the resulting collisions - had created many more kinds of subatomic particles than the protons neutrons and electrons with which they were familiar. As the number of particles grew several were found to exhibit what was called "strange" behavior. The rate at which they were created in certain collisions with other particles suggested that their behavior was governed by the strong nuclear force which characteristically acts very rapidly. The strong force the weak nuclear force electromagnetism and gravity make up the four fundamental forces that are believed to underlie all phenomena. The strange particles took a surprisingly long time to decay however which should not have been the case if they were governed by the strong force. The rate at which they decayed seemed to indicate that this process was governed by the much slower weak force. Murray Gell-Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1969 "for his contributions and discoveries concerning the classification of elementary particles and their interactions." - Wasson Nobel Prize winners pp. 370-372. Murray Gell-Mann joined the faculty of the California Institute of Technology in 1955 as an associate professor; the following year he became a full professor and in 1967 he was named Robert A. Millikan Professor of Physics. Reviews of Modern Physics, Vol. 31, No. 3, July, 1959. hardcover

Pp. 1067-1084. First publication of Gell-Mann's Nobel prize winning paper in which he classified the hadrons according to a system he called the 'Eightfold Way' and which ultimately led to the quark model of hadron composition.<br><br>"Professor Gell-Mann. You have given fundamental contributions to our knowledge of mesons and baryons and their interactions. You have developed new algebraic methods which have led to a far-reaching classification of these particles according to their symmetry properties. The methods introduced by you are among the most powerful tools for further research in particle physics." Nobel Prize Presentation Speech.<br><br>"The second stage on the way to quarks was what Gell-Mann called the 'eightfold way'. Symmetries are an important feature of physics. They are properties observed when transformation are applied to physical systems. The mathematical theory of transformations is called group theory. In earlier episodes we already discussed features of angular momentum spin and isospin which are described by a special unitary group called SU2 without mentioning that term. In 1961 Gell-Mann combined isospin and strangeness to form a quantity which he called unitary spin and studied its properties under the group SU3 of transformation. Presented in the present paper" The Harvest of A Century. unknown

First edition first printing of Gell-Mann's most cited paper which introduced his "Eightfold Way" work that would lead to his Nobel Prize in 1969. In the decades following the Second World War physicists discovered an astonishing array of particles but struggled to explain their relationships and how they fit into the overall structure of the universe. Gell-Man's Eightfold Way scheme "brought order out of the chaos created by the discovery of some 100 kinds of particles in collisions involving atomic nuclei. Gell-Mann subsequently found that all of those particles including the neutron and proton are composed of fundamental building blocks that he named 'quarks' with very unusual properties. That idea has since been fully confirmed by experiment. The quarks are permanently confined by forces coming from the exchange of 'gluons.'" Nobel Prize committee. GELL MANN MURRAY
Symmetries of Baryons and Mesons
Lancaster PA and New York NY: American Inst. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine. FIRST EDITION of Murray Gell-Mann's Nobel-Prize winning work on the discovery of the "Eightfold Way" "Gell-Mann as naturalist collector and categorizer was well primed to interpret the exploding particle universe of the 1960s. New technology in the accelerators- liquid hydrogen bubble chambers and computers for automating the analysis of collision tracks- seemed to have spilled open a bulky canvas bag from which nearly a hundred distinct particles had now tumbled forth. Gell-Mann and independently an Israeli theorist Yuval Ne'eman found a way in 1961 to organize the various symmetries of spins and strangeness into a single scheme. It was a group in the mathematicians' sense of the word known as SU3 though Gell-Mann quickly and puckishly dubbed it the Eightfold Way. It was like an intricate translucent object which when held to the light would reveal families of eight or ten or possibly twenty-seven particles- and they would be different though overlapping families depending on which way one chose to view it. The Eightfold Way was a new periodic table- the previous century's triumph in classifying and thus exposing the hidden regularities in a similar number of disparate 'elements.' But it was also a more dynamic object. The operations of group theory were like special shuffles of a deck of cards or the twists of a Rubik's cube. "Much of SU3's power came from the way it embodied a concept increasingly central to the high-energy theorist's way of working: the concept of inexact symmetry almost symmetry near symmetry or- the term that won out- broken symmetry. The particle world was full of near misses in its symmetries a dangerous problem since it seemed to permit an ad hoc escape route whenever an expected relationship failed to match. Broken symmetry implied a process a change in status. Many of the broken symmetries of particle physics came to seem like choices the universe made when it condensed from a hot chaos into cooler matter spiked as it is with so many hard-edged asymmetrical contingencies. "Once again Gell-Mann trusted his scheme enough to predict as a consequence of broken symmetry a specific hitherto-unseen particle. This the omega minus duly turned up in 1964- a thirty-three-experimenter team had to canvass more than one million feet of photographs- and Gell-Mann's Nobel Prize followed five years later" James Gleick Genius. Particle Physics One Hundred Years of Discoveries: "Introduction of the SU3 singlet-octet structure of the known mesons and octet-decuplet structure for the baryons. Prediction of the Ω- hyperon. Nobel prize to M. Gell-Mann awarded in 1969 'for his contributions and discoveries concerning the classification of elementary particles and their reactions'." NOTE: Gell-Mann first introduced the concept of the Eightfold Way in a 1961 Cal. Inst. Tech Report CTSL-20 before developing his ideas more fully in his famous paper in The Physical Review. In: The Physical Review Vol 125 pp. 1067-1084. Lancaster PA and New York NY: American Institute of Physics 1962. Quarto original printed wrappers; custom box.
