The Keys to Excellence; The Story of the Deming Philosophy

DJ is price-clipped and has some moisture rippling. Cover of book appears unaffected. Inscribed by author on fep to Curt Reimann! Nancy Robbins Mann is an American statistician known for her research on quality management reliability estimation and the Weibull distribution. Curt Reimann began his career at NIST as a research chemist in 1962. He was Adjunct Professor of Chemistry at the University of Maryland for three years. During his career at NIST Curt Reimann was promoted to Deputy Director of the National Measurement Laboratory NML. Earlier he served as the Program Manager and Scientific Assistant to the Director of Commerce. From 1987 Curt Reimann was the Director of the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award and the Director for Quality Programs at the NIST. He held these positions until his retirement. After retirement Reimann still served as chairman and he was involved in the development of quality standards. This book is about a comprehensive philosophy for management and the man who devised it. It aims to be a management tool for building quality into products in order to increase productivity and attain a more favorable competitive position. The book explains how the Deming philosophy evolved and how the West exposed to it in it's embryonic form during World War II failed to recognize as Japan did its importance for economic development. It shows how the Japanese implemented the philosophy and how their success has influenced companies in the West to adopt it as a working principle. Prestwick Books hardcover

The Wars of the Roosevelts; The Ruthless Rise of America's Greatest Political Family
New York: Harper 2016. First Edition Stated First Printing Stated. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. x 4 609 1 pages. Genealogy Table. Author's Note. Illustrations. Archival Collections. Notes. Selected Bibliography. Index. DJ has slight wear and soiling. William J. Mann born August 7 1963 is an American novelist biographer and Hollywood historian best known for his studies of Hollywood and the American film industry. His 2006 biography of Katharine Hepburn Kate: The Woman Who Was Hepburn was named one of the Best Books of the Year by Publishers Weekly that gave it a starred review. Kate was also named one of the 100 Notable Books of 2006 by The New York Times. A provocative thoroughly modern revisionist biographical history of one of America's greatest and most influential families-the Roosevelts-exposing heretofore unknown family secrets and detailing complex family rivalries. Drawing on historical documents and interviews Mann paints an elegant meticulously researched and groundbreaking group portrait of this legendary family. Mann argues that the Roosevelts' rise to power and prestige was actually driven by a series of intense personal contest. His compelling and eye-opening masterwork is the story of a family at war with itself-in which the strong devoured the weak and repudiated the inconvenient. Mann focuses on Eleanor Roosevelt who he argues experienced this brutality firsthand witnessing her Uncle Theodore cruelly destroy her father Elliott for political expediency. Mann also brings into focus TR's children whose stories propelled the family rivalry but have never before been fully chronicled as well as her illegitimate half-brother Elliott Roosevelt Mann. Elliott Mann embodied the American Dream rising to middle-class prosperity and enjoying one of the very few happy long-term marriages in the Roosevelt saga. Harper hardcover

Mann for All Seasons; Wit and Wisdom from the Washington Post's Judy Mann
New York: MasterMedia Publishing Co 1990. Presumed First Edition First printing stated. Hardcover. very good/very good. 10 306 4 pages. Index. Inscribed on fep. Judy Mann December 24 1943 in Washington D.C. - July 8 2005 was a correspondent for the Washington Post where she wrote about women children and the politics of the women's movement. Mann spent her childhood in Paris and was able to speak fluent French before returning to the US to go to high school. She graduated from Washington-Lee High School in Arlington. While still in high school Mann worked for the Northern Virginia Sun where she was an assistant teen editor. Mann later obtained her degree from Barnard College. During her time here she joined a group and students and they traveled to Cuba disobeying US law. In 1966 Mann worked as a sales representative for Avon products. From 1968-1972 she worked as a reporter and editor for the Washington Daily News. Mann was known for her liberal and feminist outlook and writings. She truly wanted to expand the women's rights which is why she put so much passion into her writing on this subject. She began working for The Post in 1972 as a city reporter and worked there for almost 30 years. She eventually worked her way up to becoming day city editor and finally a columnist in 1978. Mann won many awards for her work on women's rights population control and child welfare. Arguing that the feminist movement strenuously promoted women's rights while neglecting the issue of individual choice Mann in her Washington Post columns reviews the role and treatment of women in the workplace politics courts and the media and assess the condition of the American family. Drawing on her experience as a single working mother her writing covers a range of topics from national issues--drugs child abuse--to profiles of memorable though little- known people. Among her suggestions for improvements: persuading men to make women full partners; lengthening school days; and involving the state and business in family and health support systems that will provide adjustable work schedules and options for tending young and elderly dependents. Kluger Ruth and Mann Peggy
The Last Escape; The Launching of the Largest Secret Rescue Movement of All Time
Garden City: Doubleday & Company Inc 1973. Presumed First Edition/First Printing. Hardcover. Very good/good. ix 1 518 pages. DJ has price present. DJ has some wear soilingand edge tears. Excerpt from KIRKUS REVIEW: Maybe not the largest maybe not the most secret but . the most exciting -- at least as recollected by Ruth Kluger about her operations with the Mossad in World War II. That was a group of ten secret individuals nine men and a woman who tried to smuggle Jews out of Europe into Palestine as Hitler was making his final decision between deportation and incineration -- and every country in the world ""regretfully"" barred its doors. Unbelievable obstacles -- finding ship owners willing to lease vessels at premium in wartime; calming down passengers confined shipboard endless baksheesh bribes to border officials stationmasters harbormasters embassies for phony transit or entry visas; evading British ships and border patrols which sent illegal immigrants only 10000 legal per year back to where they came or at best to some Palestinian prison; and finally money from rich Jews unwilling to believe their civilized world was collapsing all around them. This is truly a tragic story no one Jews gypsies or the great untouched should ever forget. Ruth Klger Aliav ne Polishuk April 27 1910 - February 16 1980 was a Ukraine-born Romanian and Israeli Jewish Zionist activist assisting in the Aliya Beth before and after World War II. Ruth Klger went to Palestine after her marriage in 1936 and later joined Aliya Beth being sent on missions to Romania and other European countries. She was one of ten original members of the Mossad a Zionist group dedicated to helping Jews escape the Holocaust in Europe. Fluent in 9 languages she raised funds and helped organize the ships the "Tiger Hill" September 1939 and the "Hilda" January 1940 to carry Jewish refugees to Palestine. After Romania became an Axis Power she escaped to Istanbul Turkey and there together with other Mossad agents organized the dispatch of the ship the Darien II in March 1941. A full account of these deeds is in her autobiography The Last Escape which was a best seller in 1974 and filmed as The Darien Dilemma 2005. She was a Mossad agent in Cairo from 1941 to 1944. In 1944 with Charles de Gaulle's help she arrived in a liberated Paris and was the first Mossad agent to contact survivors of the Holocaust. In October 1945 Klger acquired a troopship the Ascanious from an American Colonel Ernest Witte of Dwight D. Eisenhower's staff. It was planned that the vessel would convey orphans to Palestine and it was soon crammed with 2600 Holocaust survivors. On arrival in Haifa the British government of Palestine had no choice but to let them in. The colonel wanted to repeat the passage but it was vetoed by Eisenhower because of British pressure. In October 1945 David Ben-Gurion arrived in Paris and to avoid eavesdroppers he and Klger Aliav went for a four-hour walk in the Bois de Boulogne. Ben Gurion wanted to know if the Holocaust survivors would be ready to sail in the cramped Aliya Beth "nutshell" ships. Klger Aliav convinced him that after the Holocaust the refugees would endure any hardship in order to reach the new homeland. Peggy Mann Houlton was the author of more than 35 books and many magazine articles. At a Congressional reception in 1985 Mrs. Houlton who wrote under her maiden name Peggy Mann was honored as one of the nation's foremost authors. Some of her books include ''Golda'' a biography of Golda Meir the former Prime Minister of Israel; and ''The Last Escape'' about a woman's mission to smuggle Jews out of Nazi-occupied Europe into Palestine. Mann Thomas and Lindley Denver Translated by
Confessions of Felix Krull Confidence Man
New York: Alfred A. Knopf 1955. First American Edition stated. Hardcover. Very good in fair dust jacket. DJ has some wear tears soiling and chips. Text in English German. 6 384 x p. From Wikipedia: "Paul Thomas Mann 6 June 1875 12 August 1955 was a German novelist short story writer social critic philanthropist essayist and 1929 Nobel laureate. His highly symbolic and ironic epic novels and novellas are noted for their insight into the psychology of the artist and the intellectual. His analysis and critique of the European and German soul used modernized German and Biblical stories as well as the ideas of Goethe Nietzsche and Schopenhauer. Mann was a member of the Hanseatic Mann family and portrayed his family and class in the novel Buddenbrooks. His older brother was the radical writer Heinrich Mann and three of his six children Erika Mann Klaus Mann and Golo Mann also became important German writers. When Hitler came to power in 1933 Mann fled to Switzerland. When World War II broke out in 1939 he immigrated to the United States whence he returned to Switzerland in 1952. Thomas Mann is one of the best-known exponents of the so-called Exilliteratur." From Wikipedia: "Denver Lindley 1904-1982 was an American translator noted for his translations of works by Thomas Mann Hermann Hesse Ernst Schnabel Andr Maurois and others. Lindley studied at Princeton University and joined Collier's magazine as an editor in 1927." From Wikipedia: "Confessions of Felix Krull is an unfinished 1954 novel by the German author Thomas Mann. It is a parody of Goethe's autobiography Poetry and Truth particularly in its pompous tone. The original title is Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers Felix Krull. Der Memoiren erster Teil translated a year later in English as Confessions of Felix Krull Confidence Man: The Early Years. Mann planned the novel since 1905 being inspired by the Romanian con artist Georges Manolescu's autobiographies Frst der Diebe A Prince of Thieves and Gescheitert Failed. Originally the character of Felix Krull appeared in a short story written in 1911. The story was not published until 1936 in the book Stories of Three Decades along with twenty-three other stories written between 1896 and 1929 the year in which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Much later Mann expanded the story and managed to finish and publish part one of the Confessions of Felix Krull but due to his death in 1955 the saga of Felix the morally flexible and irresistible conman remains unfinished." Illustrations. Notes on the Text. Biographical Notes. Index of References to Thomas Mann's works; General Index. After the death of Richard Winston Clara Winston was assisted in completing the translation by their daughter Krishna WInston. Mann destroyed all his diaries written prior to 1896 but his 20th century volumes survived. From Wikipedia: Thomas Mann 6 June 1875 12 August 1955 was a German novelist short story writer social critic philanthropist essayist and 1929 Nobel Prize laureate known for his highly symbolic and ironic epic novels noted for their insight into the psychology of the artist and the intellectual. Golo Mann was one of his six children. When Hitler came to power in 1933 Mann fled to Switzerland. When World War II broke out in 1939 he emigrated to the United States. Thomas Mann is one of the best-known exponents of the so-called Exilliteratur. Paul Thomas Mann was born in Lbeck Germany and was the second son of Thomas Johann Heinrich Mann a senator and a grain merchant and his wife Jlia da Silva Bruhns a Brazilian of partial German ancestry who emigrated to Germany when seven years old. His mother was Roman Catholic but Mann was baptised into his father's Lutheran faith. Mann attended the science division of a Lbeck Gymnasium school then spent time at the Ludwig Maximillians University of Munich and Technical University of Munich where in preparation for a journalism career he studied history economics art history and literature. He lived in Munich from 1891 until 1933 with the exception of a year in Palestrina Italy with his novelist elder brother Heinrich. His career as a writer began when he wrote for Simplicissimus. Mann's first short story "Little Mr Friedemann" Der Kleine Herr Friedemann was published in 1898. In 1905 he married Katia Pringsheim daughter of a wealthy secular Jewish industrialist family. She later joined the Lutheran faith of her husband. The couple had six children. During World War I Mann supported Kaiser Wilhelm II's conservatism and attacked liberalism. Yet in Von Deutscher Republik 1923 as a semi-official spokesman for parliamentary democracy Mann called upon German intellectuals to support the new Weimar Republic. He also gave a lecture at the Beethovensaal in Berlin on 13 October 1922 which appeared in Die neue Rundschau in November 1922 in which he developed his defence of the Republic based on extensive close readings of Novalis and Walt Whitman. Hereafter his political views gradually shifted toward liberal left and democratic principles. In 1930 Mann gave a public address in Berlin titled "An Appeal to Reason" in which he strongly denounced National Socialism and encouraged resistance by the working class. This was followed by numerous essays and lectures in which he attacked the Nazis. In 1933 when the Nazis came to power Mann and his wife were on holiday in Switzerland. Due to his strident denunciations of Nazi policies his son Klaus advised him not to return. But Thomas Mann's books in contrast to those of his brother Heinrich and his son Klaus were not among those burnt publicly by Hitler's regime in May 1933 possibly since he had been the Nobel laureate in literature for 1929. In 1936 the Nazi government officially revoked his German citizenship. A few months later he moved to California. During the war Mann made a series of anti-Nazi radio-speeches Deutsche Hrer! "German listeners! ". They were taped in the USA and then sent to Great Britain where the BBC transmitted them hoping to reach German listeners. Thomas Mann's works were first translated into English by H. T. Lowe-Porter beginning in 1924. Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929 principally in recognition of his popular achievement with the epic Buddenbrooks 1901 The Magic Mountain Der Zauberberg 1924 and his numerous short stories. Mann's diaries unsealed in 1975 tell of his struggles with his homosexuality which found reflection in his works most prominently through the obsession of the elderly Aschenbach for the 14-year-old. The Rebellion of Ronald Reagan: A History of the End of the Cold War
New York NY: Viking Books 2009. First edition. First printing stated. Hardcover. Very good in very good dust jacket. Signed by author. Signature in blue but inscription is in the same hand in black ink on t-p. Small black dot on bottom edge. xx 396 p. Chronology. Illustrations. Notes. Index. In "The Rebellion of Ronald Reagan" "New York Times" bestselling author James Mann directs his keen analysis to Ronald Reagan's role in ending the Cold War. Drawing on new interviews and previously unavailable documents Mann offers a fresh and compelling narrative-a new history assessing what Reagan did and did not do to help bring America's four-decade conflict with the Soviet Union to a close. As he did so masterfully in "Rise of the Vulcans" Mann sheds new light on the hidden aspects of American foreign policy. He reveals previously undisclosed secret messages between Reagan and Moscow; internal White House intrigues; and battles with leading figures such as Nixon and Kissinger who repeatedly questioned Reagan's unfolding diplomacy with Mikhail Gorbachev. He details the background and fierce debate over Reagan's famous Berlin Wall speech and shows how it fitted into Reagan's policies. This book finally answers the troubling questions about Reagan's actual role in the crumbling of Soviet power; and concludes that by recognising the significance of Gorbachev Reagan helped bring the Cold War to a close From Wikipedia: "Ronald Wilson Reagan February 6 1911 June 5 2004 was the 40th President of the United States 1981 1989. Prior to that he was the 33rd Governor of California 1967 1975 and a radio film and television actor. Born in Tampico Illinois and raised in Dixon Reagan was educated at Eureka College earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and sociology. After graduating Reagan moved first to Iowa to work as a radio broadcaster and then in 1937 to Los Angeles where he began a career as an actor first in films and later television. Some of his most notable films include Knute Rockne All American 1940 Kings Row 1942 and Bedtime for Bonzo 1951. Reagan served as President of the Screen Actors Guild and later as a spokesman for General Electric GE; his start in politics occurred during his work for GE. Originally a member of the Democratic Party his positions began shifting rightward in the 1950s and he switched to the Republican Party in 1962. After delivering a rousing speech in support of Barry Goldwater's presidential candidacy in 1964 he was persuaded to seek the California governorship winning two years later and again in 1970. He was defeated in his run for the Republican presidential nomination in 1968 and in 1976 but won both the nomination and general election in 1980 defeating incumbent Jimmy Carter. As president Reagan implemented sweeping new political and economic initiatives. His supply-side economic policies dubbed "Reaganomics" advocated reducing tax rates to spur economic growth controlling the money supply to reduce inflation deregulation of the economy and reducing government spending. In his first term he survived an assassination attempt took a hard line against labor unions announced a new War on Drugs and ordered an invasion of Grenada. He was re-elected in a landslide in 1984 proclaiming that it was "Morning in America". His second term was primarily marked by foreign matters such as the ending of the Cold War the 1986 bombing of Libya and the revelation of the Iran Contra affair. Publicly describing the Soviet Union as an "evil empire" he supported anti-communist movements worldwide and spent his first term forgoing the strategy of dtente by ordering a massive military buildup in an arms race with the USSR. Reagan negotiated with Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev culminating in the INF Treaty and the decrease of both countries' nuclear arsenals. Reagan left office in 1989. In 1994 the former president disclosed that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease earlier in the year; he died ten years later at the age of 93. A conservative icon he ranks highly in public opinion polls of U.S. Presidents and is credited for generating an ideological renaissance on the American political right."
