MONTAIGNE Michel de
ESSAYS OF MONTAIGNE. With notes Life and Letters. Complete in 10 Volumes Trans. by Charles Cotton. Revised by William Carew Hazlett. With an essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson
New York: Edwin C. Hill 1910. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Good . Octavo ten volumes. Sometimes called the "Emerson Edition." Overall a good or better set in the publisher's blue boards with white cloth spines and paper spine labels. Note carefully however: Volume I is damaged externally with about 20% of the front board simply worn away and the spine worn as well see image. Otherwise all volumes are quite crisp square and clean even appearing unread but for external dampstaining on a few volumes affecting some but very few! interior pages. A few but not all volumes have a previous owner's stamp on the front free endpaper. Top edge gilt uncut pages. Part of a limited edition of 1050 copies this set is out of series. The unsightly state of Volume I is regrettable but renders this set a good project for a practicing or well-established bookbinder or perhaps someone who already has a nice copy of Volume I. Edwin C. Hill hardcover

Lacking the two preliminary leaves to volume three title and Contents; portrait strengthened on back with old paper; running title and page number of Kk3v cropped off in volume one due to a printing alignment error; small chip to blank lower fore-corner of N1 in volume two and small chip to upper margin of Hh1 just touching running title both apparently due to original paper flaws one or two side-notes a trifle cropped and light damp-staining to last few leaves; small hole to upper margin of D4 in volume three just touching the page number due again to an original paper flaw; otherwise a nice copy. Originally published in French at Bordeaux in two volumes in 1580 volume three being added with the Paris edition of 1588 this is the second translation into English: preceded by the 1603 edition of John Florio. The last book that Cotton saw through the press and his major achievement it immediately supplanted the earlier translation. NCBEL 2: 95 and 438. In the present copy in volume one pp.562 and 563 are misnumbered 546 and 547; pp.566 and 567 are misnumbered 550 and 155; pp.570 and 571 554 and 555; and pp.674 and 575 558 and 559; in volume two pp.33 and 40 lack the page numbers; p.58 is misnumbered 85; pp.174 and 175 are misnumbered 173 and 174; and p.310 is misnumbered 301; in the page number to p.227 the first two numerals are upside-down; in volume three p.167 is misnumbered 147; and p.429 is misnumbered 329; leaf C3 is signed C5. The discontinuity between pp.307 and 316 in volume one occurs in all copies and does not denote a lack: they fall on the recto and verso of one leaf and the catch-words and sense both follow on. The collation suggests the lack of a blank Oo8 at the end of volume three. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated. hardcover

RARE IN THE MOROCCO BINDING. A FINE LIMITED PRINTING BASED UPON THE FIRST TRANSLATION OF THE ESSAYS INTO ENGLISH 1613. Although not a strictly accurate rendering Florio's translation is the best-known because of its beautiful language noted for containing "flowers of speech which grow not in the garden of the original."<br> Montaigne was one of the great European intellectuals of the 16th century and is often credited with being the father of the modern essay. His works were of great influence to Descartes Pascal Bacon and Swift. <br> Montaigne wrote these essays during a most calamitous period in European history and to which he frequently calls attention. The religious and civil confusion resulting from the break up of Christian unity in Europe the frequently violent disturbances which followed Luther's challenge to Papal authority at the start of the sixteenth century the constant religious and political fighting throughout Europe as different peoples and groups tried to establish or re-establish their authority was exacerbated still more by the shattering of the devout religious confidence which had been observed so perfectly in Hildegard and Dante. This awesome conflict on the continent was not resolved until 1648.<br> Montaigne’s Essays evoke to the highest level the struggle of the intellectual in this cathartic period. And one essay in particular is especially important in the history of English theatre for “the Canniballs†is credited with being a primary influence for William Shakespeare’s TEMPEST.
