The story of a young visionary Cola di Rienzo who overthrew the rule of the barons and the pope in 1347 in Rome. Cola's revolution then attempted to restore the greatness of the city revive the ancient Roman Republic and usher in a new reign of liberty and peace. However his rule turned to tyranny then disgrace and then exile all in only seven months. His life has some strange turn of events but ultimately he is killed on the steps of the Capitoline by the Roman people near where the statue of him now stands.
