First edition in English first printed in French at Cologne in 1656-7. Twelvemo. 24 409 1 blank 6 pp. With preliminary blank a post-script leaf referring to the seventeenth letter and two final leaves of errata and advertisements. Added engraved title-page by Robert Vaughan. Eighteenth-century paneled calf neatly rebacked retaining old morocco lettering label. Spine lettered in gilt with decorative gilt board-edges. Eighteenth-century armorial bookplate of John Hustler of Acklam mounted on verso of engraved title-page. Early ink notations at bottom of engraved title-page. Leaves Q thru Q12 have been affected by printer's ink mostly just a little smudging; verso of Q10 is the only page where two lines of text have been affected. Apart from the few flaws this is a fine copy of a very rare and famous work. This work is a series of eighteen letters in which "Pascal defended Arnauld and satirized his Jesuit opponents and their theological and moral views. The work was published under the pseudonym Louis de Montalte and were probably the cooperative work of Pascal Arnauld and Pierre Nicole though they were principally Pascal" Edwards P. The Encyclopedia of Philosophy p. 52. Les Provinciales is considered one of the great French literary masterpieces and the first example of French prose. No translator's name ever appeared in any of the English editions and to this day the translator remains unknown. There is however a strong possibility that the work might have been translated by Evelyn. In 1664 a third volume on Jesuitisme appeared and the translation was fully acknowledged by Evelyn. In his diaries he writes: "This day was publish'd by me that part of the Mysterie of Jesuitism translated and collected by me tho' without my name containing the Imaginarie Heresy with 4 letters and other pieces.Evelyn included the book in the list of his works sent to Dr. Plot and though he did not refer to it again in his Diary his interest in the subject remained very active" Keynes John Evelyn pp. 124-126. Cloth frayed and discolored some rubbing of binding with gift label on pastedown of Library of the Social Union gift of Daniel A. Hayes 1828 signature present purchase notation from library on free endpaper by Charles Dealano by purchase from Soc. Mission Soc. June 1846 some spotting and browning upper margin of free endpaper torn away else a very good copy. First American edition and the first work by Pascal published in America. This translation first published in London in 1816. xii 13-319 pp. 1 vols. 12mo. Attacking the Jesuits. Reponding to attacks of the Jesuits on the Jansenists and especially on Antoine Arnauld Pascal wrote this very effective defence and counter-attack on the code of ethics of the Jesuits. It was very popular and placed on the "Index" in 1660. Anti-Catholic sentiment in America was strengthened in the 1820's encouraged by the dis-information disseminated by the British anti-Catholics fighting the Catholic Emancipation Act 1829 and the repeal of the Test Act 1828 and aggravated by the increase of Catholic immigrants. The "Nativist" groups who throughout American history had directed much of their antagonism towards the Roman Catholics established groups like the American "Know-Nothing" Party and the "No-Popery" movement. Contemporary reverse calf suede boards later rebacked and recornered in grained calf spine with blind rules between raised bands gilt lettering direct endpapers renewed. Covers rubbed especially along edges old ink inscriptions to upper margin of both titles with translator's name supplied in ink text lightly browned with some offsetting of frontis portraits onto titles armorial bookplate but otherwise a clean presentable set. The First Edition of Andrew�s translation of the "Lettres Provinciales" together with the first appearance in English of the life of Pascal by his sister Mme. Perier. Anonymously published in 1656-7 Pascal�s series of 18 brilliant and witty letters were composed in defense of Antoine Arnauld and the Jansenists at Port-Royal against the attacks of the Jesuits of the Sorbonne. The translator William Andrews viewed Pascal�s devastating exposure of the casuistry and moral laxity of the Jesuits as beneficial to English readers in the on-going struggle against Catholicism. Though not the first English version Andrew�s elegant and cultivated rendering manages to convey better than its predecessors the literary and satirical qualities of Pascal�s masterpiece. Referring to the Provinciales as one of the works that most influenced his writing Gibbon states that it was from Pascal he learned "to manage the weapon of grave and temperate irony even on subjects of ecclesiastical solemnity". First Edition of the Second English Translation of the 'Provincial Letters' by William Andrews and First Edition in English of the prefatory biography of Pascal by his sister. Pascal's famous defence of Jansenism the seventeenth-century French ascetic movement of reform inside the Roman Catholic Church stands as a brilliant and noble defence of thought in religious faith. The author's first important ethical work and a classic of French prose it was composed following Pascal's removal in 1654 to Port Royal the monastery famous as the centre of the Jansenist movement. Written in response to the Jesuit attacks on Jansenism which culminated in the condemnation by the Sorbonne at the end of 1655 of Antoine Arnauld the leading light of Port Royal the Lettres were originally issued clandestinely in a series of eighteen separate parts between January 23 1656 and January 15 1657. Pascal's magnificent invective against the casuistical methods of argument employed by the Jesuits seriously weakened their position in France and was largely responsible for the traditional bad reputation which they still bear. The prefatory biography was written by Pascal's sister Jacqueline Perier who was a nun at Port Royal. "Pascal's counter-attack took the form of a brilliant exposure of the casuistical methods of argument employed by the Jesuits.His weapon was irony and the freshness with which the gravity of the subject contrasts with the lightness of the manner is an enduring triumph.
