‎The Bells and Other Poems‎

‎London: Hodder & Stoughton 1912. First trade edition. Original grey-green cloth gilt stamped on front cover with all-over Dulac design of clusters of bells and lettered in gilt. Spine lettered in gilt and with similar design. Unpaginated. Twenty-eight color plates with descriptive tissue guards. Ten black ink head-pieces on tan backgrounds and portrait of Poe on the title-page also in black ink on tan background. An excellent copy.

"Dulac's pictures for The Bells were more uniform in mood and style than groupings for almost any other book of his to this time. Although water colours they are overstreaked with gilt in some cases crayon in others to produce rich haunting effects. Deep shades of blue and a special deep pink-rust predominate throughout. The Outlook commented: 'sometimes Dulac's pictures are deep-coloured and intense sometimes dim and ghost-like. But one and all are sensitized to record impressions of unearthly beauty or horror. Only Poe could have written the poems. Only Dulac could have illustrated them'.As the 10 Bells headpieces show he had now become truly masterful with his pen" Hughey.

Hughey 29a. Hodder & Stoughton unknown books‎

‎Eureka A Prose Poem; An Essay on the Material and Spiritual Universe‎

‎San Francisco: The Arion Press 1991. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Arakawa. No. 95 of 276 copies folio size 119 pp. signed by Arakawa. "Eureka" a substantial essay on the nature of the universe is a later work by Edgar Allan Poe 1809-1849 published a year before he died. Best known for his Gothic and Romantic short stories and poems especially "The Raven" and "The Fall of the House of Usher" Poe named this work a "prose poem" and he brings poetic sensibilities to his intuitive search for truth in the cosmos. The text has been interpreted numerous ways partly because Poe's seriousness in the essay has been questioned by some due for example to his jocular treatment of historical figures.

Illustrating this Arion Press edition is Japanese artist and architect Arakawa 1936-2010 who takes excerpts of the text and overlays geometric symbols and patterns simultaneously clarifying and obfuscating meaning.

___DESCRIPTION: Full light brown cloth grey wraparound ruled borders orange and grey lettering on the both boards and spine fore- and bottom edges uncut photo-engravings based on drawings on mylar by Arakawa in grey and black throughout; Walbaum and handset Bodoni Book types Waterford paper folio size 13.75" by 10" pagination: i-ii iii-ix x 1-4 5-107 108 1 colophon one of 276 copies this number 95 signed by Arakawa on the colophon. ‎Poe Edgar Allan; Clarke Harry Illustrations‎

‎Tales of Mystery and Imagination‎

‎New York: Tudor Publishing Co 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. Clarke Harry. First Tudor edition quarto size 412 pp. with original publisher's dust jacket and box. Edgar Allan Poe 1809-1849 needs no introduction as the master of the macabre. He gained a reputation as a popular writer and became a household name by 1845 although he continued to struggle financially for the rest of his life. One of the first writers to attempt to make a living solely off his work Poe's work greatly affected the burgeoning genres of horror and science fiction and much of his work explores the tumultuous depths of the human psyche.

The tales are perfectly complemented by the artwork of Harry Henry Patrick Clarke 1890-1931 who would become a leading figure in the arts and crafts movement. Clarke was apprenticed as a glass-maker to his father the head of a large firm of stained glass artists in 1906. An accomplished glass artist whose work can be seen in both secular and religious settings Clarke's illustrations can be compared to that of Aubrey Beardsley Kay Nielson and Edmund Dulac taken up during the tail end of what was considered the Golden Age of Illustration; his work is often imbued with a sinister atmosphere also exemplified by Beardsley and which come to full force in this work.

A stunning example the volume incredibly clean and fresh in a dust jacket that is clean and bright and with the original box: Poe's "Tales" with Clarke's illustrations as they were meant to be.

___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full black cloth over boards gilt decoration and lettering on the spine paper label mounted onto front board with an illustration by Clarke in black and white over a half-gold ground above black lettering and decorations top edge stained black black endpapers tipped-in colour frontispiece title page with small illustration by Clarke seven additional full-colour plates by Clarke bound in throughout plus twenty-four pages of black and white illustrations two of the pages constitute a single double-spread illustration chapter tailpieces by Clarke throughout; quarto size 10 5/8" by 8 1/4" pagination: 1-8 9-412 followed by a half-page Clark vignette. With the publisher's dust jacket Clark illustrations on front and spine in black white and yellow black lettering on front and spine on a yellow ground the rest of the jacket coal-black other than the inner portions of the flaps which are plain white free of lettering or ornamentation. Contained within the publisher's box the sides covered with black paper the bottom with plain white paper the top with a mounted white page with blue ruled borders enclosing one of the full-colour illustrations with black lettering both above and below.

___CONDITION: Volume fine overall the binding clean and unworn the paper label on the front clean and without any wear straight corners without rubbing a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright and entirely free of prior owner markings; the colour frontis slightly creased at the bottom gutter corner from catching when the book was closed as it was tipped in at the top not mounted else fine; clean crisp and almost as new. The dust jacket is unclipped although without a printed price clean the colours deep and bright utterly unfaded with a minimum of light scattered overall wear the most noticeable to the two front corners with very small loss to the lower front corner. The publisher's box a solid very good with minor overall soiling the lid with two seams just beginning to break and a bit of wear to the black paper the bottom with a bit more wear and two seams partially split however still sturdy.

___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.

___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. ‎The Fall of the House of Usher‎

‎Paris: Editions Narcisse printed by Lescaret 1928. Limited Edition. Wraps. Near fine. Alastair. No. 4 of of 300 copies quarto size 77 pp. Edgar Allan Poe 1809-1849 remains to this day a household name a master of mystery and the macabre. "Most famously Poe completely transformed the genre of the horror story with his masterful tales of psychological depth and insight not envisioned in the genre before his time and scarcely seen in it since. Stories like 'The Tell-Tale Heart' 'The Cask of Amontillado' 'The Pit and the Pendulum' 'The Masque of the Red Death' and 'The Fall of the House of Usher' reveal Poe's talent at its height" n.b. from the web site of the Poe Museum.

This short story "The Fall of the House of Usher" first published in 1839 in "Gentleman's Magazine" is thought by many to be based on certain events which took place at an actual house in Boston the "Hezekiah Usher House"; when the house was torn down in 1830 "two bodies were found embraced in a cavity in the cellar" n.b. from Wiki.

With illustrations by "Alastair" the nickname used by Hans Henning Otto Harry Baron von Voight 1887-1969 a highly-talented man who in addition to being an artist was also a composer and dancer. His illustrations are heavily influenced by Aubrey Beardsley with the look of Art Nouveau often with a "perverse and sinister" feel - which perfectly compliments this text by Poe.

The publisher of this volume "Editions Narcisse" was the name chosen for their first publishing venture by Harry Crosby 1898-1929 and his wife Caresse 1891-1970 who would later found the renowned Black Sun Press "one of the most important small presses in Paris in the 1920s" Wiki. The story behind Harry and Caresse is one of love and scandal against the backdrop of WWI and the Jazz Age of Paris; Crosby met Ernest Hemingway in 1926 while skiing in Gstaad and in 1927 they visited Pamplona together for the running of the bulls.

___DESCRIPTION: String-bound with self-wraps the front wrap with lettering in red and black red and black ruled borders back wrap with publisher's device in red and a single black ruled border fore- and bottom edges uncut title page in red and black which mirrors the front wrap two initial capitals and sectional title in red all text in italics the five illustrations by Alastair bound throughout in shades of black and red tissue-guarded tipped onto silver-covered heavy paper; while the text is in English the colophon is in French this one of 300 copies printed on Holland Van Gelder paper there were also seven HC copies and one unique copy with an extra suite of prints; quarto size 10.25" by 7 1/8" pagination: i-iv half-title and title pages I-XIX Introduction by Symons XX blank 1-50 51-52 blanks 53 colophon.

___CONDITION: Near fine the wraps free of soil although with some toning the corners gently bent a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright and entirely free of prior owner markings; professional restoration to the wrapper spine invisible a few very light spots on the half-title page some small wear to the fore-edge one of the five illustrations missing the tissue guard lacking the original glassine jacket. Still a lovely copy of one of Poe's best stories by an important Paris printer of the interwar period.

___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.

___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. ‎Mesmerism "in articulo mortis‎

‎London: Short & Co 1846.
Poe Edgar Allan 1809-49. Mesmerism "in articulo mortis." An astounding & horrifying narrative shewing the extraordinary power of mesmerism in arresting the progress of death. 16pp. London: Short & Co. 1846. 213 x 138 mm. Without wrappers as issued; preserved in a cloth folding case. Light toning but a fine copy. Bookplate of American book collector Edward Hubert Litchfield 1879-1949.

First Separate Edition of Poe's gruesome short story on the occult "powers" of mesmerism originally published under the title "The facts in the case of M. Valdemar" in The American Whig Review of December 1845. "Poe plays with the idea that a dying person may be so imbued with magnetic fluid by a mesmerist that he can remain although dead in a kind of suspended death for months until released by the mesmerist—at which point his body immediately turns into a pile of stinking putrid slime. Taking it to be factual people seriously debated whether such a horrifying use of mesmerism was possible and condemned it on the assumption that it was" Waterfield Hidden Depths: The Story of Hypnosis p. 146. "Mesmerism ‘in articulo mortis'" was the last of three mesmeric tales Poe wrote in 1844 and 1845; although these works "were essentially literary it is also significant that these works were written in the style of scientific texts . . . Although Poe's intentions remain somewhat ambiguous leading some critics to suggest that he may have actually attempted to perpetrate a literary hoax it is important to acknowledge that these works were published and received as legitimate contributions to the field of science and thus they offer insight into the assumptions and expectations of the scientific community" Enns p. 65. Enns "Mesmerism and the electric age: From Poe to Edison" in Willis & Wynne eds. Victorian Literary Mesmerism pp. 61-82.
