'John Monash 1914' dated signature on decorated front endpaper. </p> <p>Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination is a compilation of writings published posthumously. In 1908 Irish poet and novelist Padraic Colum 1881-1972 selected forty-five tales from Poe's collection to form a new version of Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination. A first posthumous collection of Poe's work was compiled and published in 1850. It was only in 1902 that the title Tales of Mystery and Imagination was used for the first time in England by The World's Classics.</p> <p>Poe's command of language and technique his imagination and his use of horror and mystery enabled him to become an influential figure in the American literary world and abroad. He played a significant role in the readers' growing interest in Gothic fiction - which had sprung from the Romanticism movement of the late eighteenth-century with English authors such as Ann Radcliffe 1764-1823 - and established short stories as a serious literary form. </p> <p>Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination is composed of stories of revenge and murders like 'The Cask of Amontillado' haunted house tales like the well-known 'The Fall of the House of Usher' and one of the first detective stories in fiction 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue'.</p> <p>This copy of Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination belonged to Sir John Monash 27 June 1865- 8 October 1931 - Commander of the Australian Corps during World War One and civil engineer - as indicated by the signature on the front endpaper. Sir John Monash was commander of the 4th Infantry Brigade during the Gallipoli campaign. In July 1916 he was promoted Major General and commanded the Australian 3rd Division around Ploegsteert. Being of Prussian-Jewish descent his rise within the army wasn't without contention but in 1918 he obtained the rank of Lieutenant General and commanded the Australian Corps. After World War One Monash accepted the appointment as Director-General of Repatriation and Demobilisation and carried out the repatriation of Australian troops from Europe. E. W. Cole unknown

Clarke Harry. 4to. 27 by 21.5 cm. 412 1 pp. With 32 plates none of which are mounted onto leaves. Plates not counted in the pagination and the backs of their leaves are blank. Clarke's illustrations for this work are today his best known and his style clearly inspired by Beardsley serves the material perfectly making them possibly the most popular illustrations connected with Poe's short stories. The book's cloth has a few indistinct or inconspicuous stains on the front cover. The dust jacket has light edgewear. The front and back cover of the dust jacket have faint vague white chalky spotting and lines -- given that the cover is black staining shows itself if it does as lighter. That said we think few would have concern for this issue which is truly trivial. We suspect that one could probably remove most of this but we ourselves think it best not to mess with things here. The box is structurally sound. The paper pastedown on the lid top has one small abrasion and some very light dusty soiling here and there. Cloth very good or near fine with generally light rubbing; the gilt decoration at spine below spine titling is almost entirely rubbed away but the wear to the gilt is elsewise very minor. Points of rubbing to corners. Fore-edge margin of the bottom of the textblock is a little dusty. Spine square. Binding sound. Bound with heavy paper deckled fore-edge black topstain.
