POE EDGAR ALLAN
TALES OF MYSTERY AND IMAGINATION
New York: Tudor 1954. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. HARRY CLARKE. First Tudor Edition. Illustrated by Harry Clarke. Black cloth with a gilt stamped title on the spine and an illustrated paper label mounted to the front cover. Housed in a box with an illustrated paper label on the front. The box is VG indeed label rubbed and with a slightly soiled lid split at one corner. The book is a fine bright copy. The D/W is also in fine condition with just a hint of rubbing and fraying in places with a minuscule chip to the top edge of the rear panel. The Arts and Crafts movement spawned a resurgence of Irish art. Harry Clarke created illustrations for Andersen and Poe from 1913 to late 1919. Clarke's eerie sometimes gruesome illustrations appear throughout as tipped-in colour plates in addition to numerous smaller black-and-white decorations that recall Aubrey Beardsley. This collection includes many of the tales that earned Poe his reputation as the master of the short horror story including The Tell-Tale Heart the Pit and the Pendulum The Gold-Bug The Fall of the House of Usher the Murders of the Rue Morgue and many more. It is hard to find the book with such a nice D/W and still in the original box Tudor hardcover
