He published regularly in Graham's between 1841-1849. The items appearing in this volume were the last to be published by Graham's before Poe's death in October 1849. The January 1850 issue was his final appearance in the magazine signed as "The Late Edgar A. Poe." This volume includes his epigrammatic observations on a number of topics titled "Fifty Suggestions" the first half appearing in the May issue at pages 317-319 and the rest in June at pages 363-364. His book review of Anna S. Lewis's "The Child of the Sea" was published in April on pages 270-271. Bound in three quarter black leather with gilt titling to spine. Marbled brown paper covered boards. Leather is rubbed and scuffed as are the paper boards. Foxing and browning to pages throughout although still quite clear and legible. Tear and small hole to last page of text. There is also a review of Poe's Tales just published by Wiley & Putnam pages 306-309. The review begins by noting that Poe was often a harsh critic of the work of many authors but continues by acknowledging the originality quality and probable popularity of Poe's stories. It continues with detailed discussions of some of Poe's most celebrated tales including "The Purloined Letter" "Murders in the Rue Morgue" "The Mystery of Marie Roget" and "The Black Cat." Also contains a review of Rufus Griswold's "Female Poets of America" on page 415. This is the first printing of "The Bells"; however "A Valentine" was originally printed in the Evening Mirror in 1846 under the title "To Her Whose Name is Written Below." Both volumes are bound together in three-quarter dark green leather with brown and black marbled paper covered boards titled in gilt on the spine. There are four raised bands ruled in gilt to the spine. There is a three inch split to the head of the front joint and it appears that the binding has been repaired amateurly at some point. Both interior hinges are cracked; however the boards and textblock remain firmly attached. Rubbing to boards with a few small open tears to the marbled paper on the rear cover. Wear to edges of the boards and corners. Spots of foxing and soiling to interior. Both volumes include numerous full page engravings some colored.
