Die an ihn ergangene Aufforderung zu verwirklichen, sich in Mainz als Professor zu betätigen, hatte ihn mächtig angezogen. Während ihm auch, jede weitere Berührung mit Perret verschlossen geblieben zu sein scheint, war es ihm möglich, sich mit Franz Wilhelm JUNG (1758-1833) in Verbindung zu setzen. Dieser war kurfürstlich mainzischer Hofrat, Leiter der Studien-Kommission in dem an Frankreich abgetretenen linksrheinischen Gebiet und treuer Freund HOELDERLINS. Es sind Fichtes Briefe an ihn, die tiefe Einblicke gestatten, wie lebendig die Sehnsucht in ihm war, in französische Dienste zu treten und sich für sein Adoptiv-Vaterland zu betätigen. Der Geist der an Jung gerichteten Briefe des Philosophen weicht unendlich weit von dem ab,, von dem die 15 Jahre später gehaltenen "Reden an die deutsche Nation" getragen sind. Es kann begreiflicherweise nicht auffallen, daß in diesen Briefen von keiner Feindschaft gegen Frankreich die Rede ist, daß vielmehr aus diesen Briefen wärmste Anhänglichkeit zu Frankreich und aufrichtiges Eintreten für Frankreich spricht. Der Einwand wäre unberechtigt, daß Fichte in einer augenblicklichen Laune Bekenntnisse abgelegt hätte, die seinem innersten Empfinden widersprochen hätten. Die Briefe sind wohlüberlegt, durchgedacht, ausgereift, einschränkungslos. Ein echtes, unbestreitbares Gefühl, ein unwiderstehliches Bekenntnis zu Frankreich bricht aus ihnen hervor. Darf man sich darüber, trotz den "Reden an die deutsche Nation", wundern? Mit nichten! Die oben erwähnten Schriften, die Fichtes unumwundene Bewunderung für Frankreichs Revolution aussprechen, bekunden mit aller Deutlichkeit, daß es ihm ernst mit seinen Versicherungen war, sich Frankreich zur Verfügung zu stellen. ...
