Estetica del brutto
“Un’estetica del brutto? E perché no?”. Con queste parole ha inizio l’opera fondamentale del filosofo tedesco Karl Rosenkranz. Se il bello, nella prospettiva del “maestro” Hegel, appare come una manifestazione sensibile dell’idea e della sua libertà, il brutto si presenta come ciò che nega o limita tale libertà attraverso l’asimmetria, l’assenza di forma, la deformità e lo sfiguramento. Il brutto come dimensione intermedia tra bello e comico trova il suo compimento nella figura del satanico. Rosenkranz opera così una straordinaria fenomenologia del diabolico, dove alla riprovazione etica si sovrappone un gusto descrittivo per tutto ciò che, pur esteticamente ripugnante, è tuttavia meritevole di attenzione estetica. L’intuizione di questo saggio non risiede solamente nell’indagare gli aspetti “brutti” dell’arte che caratterizzano gran parte della nostra contemporaneità, ma anche nella messa in discussione del destino stesso dell’estetica: dopo di esso, estetico e bello non possono più coincidere con la medesima armonia, e l’estetica stessa, oltre a non presentarsi come teoria del bello o delle belle arti, apre un inquietante sguardo verso ambigui e multiformi aspetti del reale. Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand Solger (1780-1819) è una figura di grande spicco nel panorama filosofico della Germania nei primi decenni dell'Ottocento. Filologo di formazione (fu allievo del celebre omerista Wolf), autore di un'importante traduzione delle opere di Sofocle, fine letterato e profondo conoscitore della cultura antica e moderna, rivolse presto il suo interesse alla ricerca filosofica, sviluppando una prospettiva che s'inscrive con grande autonomia nel quadro dei grandi sistemi dell'Idealismo tedesco. Di singolare rilevanza è la dottrina estetica di Solger che ha il maggiore elemento di originalità nella concezione dell'opera d'arte come risultato di una specifica attività conoscitivo-creativa del soggetto, che culmina nella celebre teoria dell'ironia, attraverso la quale egli individua l'essenza specifica dell'arte in una finitezza che diviene tuttavia necessaria alla manifestazione dell'Assoluto. E comunque l'incidenza fondamentale dell'estetica di Solger, un tempo eclissata dalla fortuna di Hegel, appare ai nostri giorni sempre più manifesta e va richiamando l'interesse anche della cultura italiana. Le presenti Lezioni, apparse postume nel 1829, offrono un quadro completo dell'estetica solgeriana, sviluppando temi cruciali quali il rapporto fra antico e moderno, la concezione del simbolo e dell'allegoria, la dottrina del tragico e la teoria del brutto (Solger fu uno dei primi teorici a formulare una teoria del brutto come necessario complemento della teoria del bello). Esse peraltro, oltre ad offrire una presentazione sistematica, apportano anche alcuni significativi approfondimenti alla sua opera più famosa e di non facile accesso (Erwin. Quattro dialoghi sul bello e sull'arte, 1815) in merito ad argomenti importanti quali la dottrina dell'ironia e la classificazione delle arti. Corredano il testo, qui presentato per la prima volta in edizione italiana e puntualmente curato da Giovanna Pinna, esaustivi apparati esegetici, critici e bibliografici. Opera simbolo della produzione estetica di Kierkegaard, e scritto centrale della celeberrima raccolta Enten-Eller uscita a Copenaghen nel 1843, il Diario del seduttore è l'ambiguo resoconto - in parte epistolare, in parte diaristico - di una raffinata e morbosa storia di seduzione. Nell'anima esacerbata dell'esteta Johannes si sposano l'angoscia di Faust e l'astuzia sensuale di Don Giovanni, per dare vita a un poeta demoniaco ai cui piedi una giovane Cordelia è destinata fatalmente a soccombere. Nel mondo malinconico ed esaltato di Johannes, realtà e sogno, vita e teatro, si confondono dialetticamente. Le persone fungono per Johannes solo da stimolo, egli le rigetta come gli alberi lasciano cadere le foglie: lui ringiovanisce mentre le fronde sono destinate inesorabilmente a seccare. Eppure, anche nella più profonda afflizione, Cordelia non riesce a odiare l'uomo che l'ha sedotta e poi abbandonata, i suoi sentimenti sono prigionieri di un'ambiguità che è anch'essa frutto della potente capacità manipolatoria del seduttore. La seduzione è dunque per Johannes un "gioco serio", un labirinto narcisisticamente conchiuso in se stesso come una trappola dalla quale non si può uscire se non rientrando nel più profondo di sé, fino a toccare quell'abisso di angoscia che solo conduce a una scelta esistenziale: aut-aut, una scelta della quale Johannes però non è capace.

Questa nuova edizione è introdotta da uno scritto di Remo Cantoni, tra i principali interpreti italiani del pensiero di Kierkegaard, e contiene una cronologia molto ricca di particolari sulla vita del filosofo danese. Chiude il libro un saggio di Gianni Garrera sul profilo religioso del seduttore in Kierkegaard.

First published in the The Pall Mall Gazette and the Pall Mall Budget on May 9th 1895. In the Sussex Edition the poem is dated 1894. ORG No. 634. Rudyard Kipling was initiated into the Lodge of Hope and Perseverance No 782 founded in 1858 under the English Constitution at the Masonic Hall the Jadughar as described in Kim in Anarkali Lahore on 5 April 1886 at the age of twenty. As this was the Lodge into which he was initiated it became his Mother Lodge. A Freemason will always have a particular attachment to the Lodge which saw him enter into Freemasonry even though he may cease to be a member of that particular Lodge. The poem was written some eight years later when he was living in Vermont. Charles Carrington in his The Complete Barrack-room Ballads p.166 reports that it was written in a single day on October 29th 1894 while Conan Doyle was staying with the Kiplings. It celebrates the equality which reigns among Freemasons without distinction of profession rank race or creed and the first two stanzas clearly reflect the diversity of this particular Lodge underscored by the refrain which contrasts the behaviour displayed in public with that shown inside the Lodge. Elaborata dalla retorica classica, in quel trattato Peri hypsous di Longino che segna la più stretta convergenza tra l'estetica antica e l'estetica moderna, l'idea del sublime attinge la sua piena legittimazione filosofica nel secolo XVIII, quando Burke e Kant dimostrano, per diversa via, la fecondità di una nozione che, mentre si contrappone alla visione serenatrice di un bello classicamente atteggiato, lascia emergere quelle inquietudini della soggettività che contribuiscono alla genesi dell'estetica romantica e che, attraverso il decadentismo, giungono fino ai dibattiti tardonovecenteschi della cosiddetta cultura postmoderna.. Pubblicato in Francia nel 1993, il libro di Baldine Saint Girons è riuscito nell'impresa, ardua e ambiziosa, di procurare una presentazione sistematica di una categoria resistente a ogni sistemazione definitiva. Traendo il titolo da quel Fiat lux biblico in cui Longino aveva additato una grandiosa e concentrata conflagrazione del pensiero e della parola, la ricerca dell'Autrice indaga i molteplici effetti del sublime in quanto esperienza di una folgorazione che provoca una perdita del controllo razionale dell'io sul mondo. Le conseguenze di questa perdita sono descritte nelle due ampie sezioni del volume, che declinano tutto il lessico del sublime (la grandezza, la bruttezza, l'oscurità, la semplicità, l'entusiasmo, il potere, la passione, la virtù) entro la tipologia dei rischî cui il sublime, sul piano teorico e sul piano pratico, espone il soggetto smarrito.. Insignito nel 2002 del "Premio Guido Morpurgo-Tagliabue" dalla Società Italiana d'Estetica, il volume di Baldine Saint Girons, spaziando dalla letteratura alla storia dell'arte, dalla religione al pensiero politico, dalla musica alla psicanalisi, costituisce la più completa indagine disponibile sulla filosofia del sublime, e viene ora a trovare la sua sede naturale nella collana che, da Longino a Demetrio, da Dennis a Burke a Vischer, ha già fatto conoscere al pubblico italiano i grandi classici antichi e moderni del sublime.
