The book is a classic travelogue and historical account of Thailand then known as Siam. It provides detailed descriptions of Siamese customs religious practices and the daily life of its citizens during the 19th century. A significant portion of the book focuses on the King of Siam and the Royal court exploring the political structure and the influence of the monarchy on the country's development. Bacon describes the landscape including the capital of Bangkok its intricate canal systems and its famous temples and palaces.
