Signa Wanda and Princess Napraxine
1875 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An uncommon set of three novels by Ouida the pen name of author Maria Louise Rame bound into three volumes each. Part of the Tauchnitz Collection of British Authors and comprising volumes 1501-1503 Signa 2145-2147 Wanda and 2256-2258 Princess Napraxine of the Nineteenth Century Series. Ouida was a French-British author who came to promenence during the Victorian era due to both her literary work and penchant for extravagent London parties where the likes of Oscar Wilde Algernon Swinburne and Robert Browning were often in attendence. She would gain a similar reputation after her emigration to Florence. Here work was characterised by social criticism sympathetic portrayals of artists and writers and romanticism this latter aspect reflected in her appreciation and fondness for the work of Lord Byron. Here three of her perhaps lesser known novels shed light on the author's opinions and reputation. Contains an illustrative plate of Ouida to the endpages of Signa as well as the bookplate of Fletcher C. H. Littledale to the pastedown of each volume. Condition: In decorative vellum binding with cloth covered boards. Externally quite smart there is some markings to the boards minor rubbing to extremities and slight wear to the backstrips. There is also some offsetting to the fore edge of the volumes comprising the novel Signa. Internally the pagesare firmly bound and generally bright and clean aside from the usual foxing to endpages and the odd spot. Overall: VERY GOOD. hardcover
