A collection of 28 stories some criminous some fantasy and most if not all seeming to come from British sources and thereby introducing such literature to the American public. Among the contributors are Thomas Hardy Wilkie Collins Ouida Charles Reade Alphonse Daudet Walter Besant F. Antsey Robert Louis Stevenson and others. All five volumes bound in blue cloth are chipped at the head/tail of spines and some rubbing at corners. All are tanned on the interiors Vol V has a breaking front hinge. Volume IV is noted for the 1885 appearance of "Bones" by Arthur Conan Doyle his first story published in a book first published in 1882 in a magazine. Interesting about the decoration - Vol I has band across front does Vol IV the others do not the others may be reprints. An Ingrate is unattributed but the gathering notes in the footer margin are for Two Offenders which is a work by the Anglo-French novelist Ouida Maria Louise Ramé comprising An Ingrate and An Assassin this latter is not present. Quarter bound in olive cloth with marbled papers to boards both of which are clean but a little faded. Black printed label to spine with gilt lines edging and gilt titles. Rubbed to all edges leaving much exposed board rubbed to the titles. Text is very clean and crisp and the binding is tight and square. Good sound copy . Hardback. 1880. Bernhard Tauchnitz hardcover
