This is 1 of only 3 uncorrected typesetter's proofs run off by the printer William Ferguson for the pubisher William Young. With original mailing label present from the Ferguson press stating with note that corrected galleys will follow. For all purposes this is the only copy of the galleys for sale as one resides in a library in the South and the other in a private collection. Article is three pages illustrated with 5 photographs including one of the author and Hemingway holding a swordfish. From the opening paragraph "Of course I wanted to meet Hemingway. But everybody in Cuba wanted to see Hemingway who had become a sort of three-star attraction for tourists and was consequently more than shy. My chances looked very slim indeed. I telephoned the Hemingway home from Havana and as I might have expected the great man was not there but his wife was very nice. 'He will ring you' she said. A full week passed and nothing happened. I was quite busy though. I witnessed a sort of Revolution. But everybody thought it was a very poor one. I saw a lot of gay negro carnival and met the President of Cuba and his charming wife. But all the time I was still hoping. The morning of the ninth day the clerk of my hotel came rushing up quite excited and shouted: 'Our Hemingway is on the phone!'" Near fine with light toning to spine upper corners slightly bent and minor crack between front flyleaf and title page otherwise sturdy binding. Overall a crisp and clean copy signed by Hemingway. With publisher's promotional material laid in. From the personal library of Hemingway's cousin Ruth White Lowry. Hanneman D89. Set in Italy during World War I A Farewell to Arms tells the story of a romance between the protagonist Frederic Henry an American serving as a lieutenant in the Italian ambulance corps and Catherine Barkley a British nurse tending to wounded soldiers. Widely considered one of the best novels to come out of the war the novel is "the very essence of beauty as twisted and made tragic by war." Unlike many of the other war novels by contemporary writers A Farewell to Arms addresses not only the aftermath of WWI but the events of the war itself specifically the Battle of Caporetto in 1917. The book was Hemingway's first bestseller and established him as a premier American writer. In his 1958 interview with The Paris Review Hemingway famously remarked "I rewrote the ending to A Farewell to Arms the last page of it thirty-nine times before I was satisfied." The title of the German edition of A Farewell to Arms translates to "In Another Country" taken from Christopher Marlowe's The Jew of Malta quote on p. 6: "Barnardine: Thou hast committed -- Barabas: Fornication: but that was in another country; and besides the wench is dead." In 1933 the book was targeted in Nazi book burnings because of its pacifist message which ran contrary to their attempts to glorify war. The book was also banned in Italy for its depiction of the devastating Battle of Caporetto; it faced censorship in the United States and Ireland for sexual content. . Signed by Author. First Edition. His critically successful second book First edition sole printing review copy with the secretarial presentation inscription on the front free endpaper "Compliments of the author" and the limitation page stamped "Review Copy" in purple underneath the printed notice that 170 copies were printed on Rives handmade paper. The fragile nature of this production means that copies in such well-preserved condition are seldom encountered. Grissom states there were an additional 130 "damaged" copies with the watermark discernible on the frontispiece that were consequentially given away as gifts or review copies. This copy is among the 170 "perfect" copies without the watermarked frontispiece evidencing that the publishers took not only from damaged stock when sending copies out for review. Considered one of the most original short story collections in 20th-century literature in our time established Hemingway as a writer of great promise. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote to Maxwell Perkins after reading the work "this is to tell you about a young man named Ernest Hemmingway sic. its remarkable & I'd look him up right away. He's the real thing" 10 October 1924. Edmund Wilson's review shows that the essence of Hemingway was already acknowledged at this early stage. "His prose is of the first distinction demonstrating a naiveté of language often passing into the colloquialism of the character dealt with which serves actually to convey profound emotions and complex states of mind. It is a distinctively American development in prose. Hemingway is rather strikingly original" The Dial October 1924. The book was the final instalment in Ezra Pound's "The Inquest into the state of contemporary English prose" series.
