This was Hemingway's first bestseller and it was based in part on his experiences as a wounded ambulance driver in Italy in World War One. It has been filmed twice in 1932 and again in 1957 and made into a three-part television miniseries in 1966. The first version was directed by Frank Borzage and starred Gary Cooper Helen Hayes Adolphe Menjou and others. The second film was directed by Charles Vidor and John Huston and starred Rock Hudson Jennifer Jones Vittorio De Sica Mercedes McCambridge et cetera. And the TV series was directed by Rex Tucker and featured George Hamilton Vanessa Redgrave Laurence Payne and a host of others including Donald Sutherland before he found stardom a few years later in MASH.
