‎Across the River and into the Trees / by Ernest Hemingway‎

‎London : Jonathan Cape 1950. First Edition. Good cloth copy in a good if slightly edge-nicked somewhat edge-rubbed dust-dulled & price-clipped dw now mylar-sleeved. Remains particularly and surprisingly well-preserved overall; tight bright clean and strong. Physical description: 254 p. ; 20 cm. Notes: First printing. Summary: The War is just over. In Venice a city elaborately and affectionately described the American Colonel Richard Cantrell falls passionately in love with Renata a young Italian countess who has 'a profile that could break your or anyone else's heart'. Cantrell is embittered war-scarred and old enough to be Renata's father but he is overwhelmed by the selflessness and freshness of the love she is offering. But this is no fairy tale. The fighting may be ended but the wounds of war have not yet healed. And for some the longed-for peace has come too late. A lesser known classic by one of the great American writers of the twentieth century Across the River And Into The Trees is still vintage Hemingway. Subject: World War 1939-1945 - Americans - Italy - Fiction. Modern fiction / Classics / Literary. Venice Italy - Fiction. Genre: Fiction. Love stories. War stories. London : Jonathan Cape hardcover‎

‎New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1950. First printing with "A" and Scribner Press colophon at copyright; first state jacket w/spine titles on yellow background. Black coated full cloth boards gilt embossed Hemingway signature at frt. board light shelf wear. Deckled pages fine no writing; lt. must scent. Bind fine; hinges intact. Dj fully intanct some edge wear crease generally good attractive; clipped protected in new clear sleeve. Jacket design by A. Ivancich. Ernest Hemingway's first novel in a decade - since For Whom the Bell Tolls - holds the essential emotion of that phenomenally successful book. In 'Across the River and into the Trees' there is a concept of the same intensity. Like the story of the Spanish civil war which was centered upon a microcosm of action - the tense last days of an American in the midst of a group of guerrilla fighters this story limits its scope to a very short span in the life of an American. This story builds its bridge not of days but of hours and it is even more charged with feeling. For many readers it will evoke a memorable earlier novel A Farewell to Arms because the background again is Italy and again it is war. This newer war however is already in the past. The fighting is over; the reader hears only its echoes. Venice is the scene. Colonel Richard Cantwell of the United States Army is the principal figure and perhaps the most complex character Hemingway ever presented. 308 pages. Insured post. First Edition. Hardcover. ‎Across the River and into the Trees‎

‎New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1950. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall. On a duck-hunting trip in Trieste an army colonel reminisces about a young Venetian woman and about his life as a soldier during the war. First printing. This is an exceptionally clean copy with no writing marks underlining or bookplates. No remainder marks. Not an ex-library copy. Spine is relatively tight for the book's age. Corners are square and the boards are flat and true. Boards do show some aging with some edge wear and bumping to the corners. The front board has some light-colored spotting along the foreedge as well as some pitting here and there. The spine cover is a bit tattered at the upper and lower extremes and is also faded with the title no longer readily visible against the background. The gold gilt lettering on the front board is a bit worn as well but the author's name is still quite legible. The pages are moderately browned and the rear pastedown endpaper is cracked in the gutter revealing the binding. Dust jacket is not price-clipped but is a modern FACSIMILE in beautiful condition. This highly collectible very good first edition/first printing copy is protected with an archival mylar dust jacket cover. A great addition to anyway Hemingway collection! Satisfaction guaranteed!

Charles Scribner's Sons hardcover‎
