‎Across the River and Into the Trees First Printing‎

‎New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1950. First printing w/'A' and Scribner colophon at copyright page. Black full-cloth boards gilt stamped facsimile Hemingway signature at front spine titles light shelf wear rub. Pages near fine clean. Stylish antiquarian signature inside cover: "Shirley A. Stokes". Bind fine square; hinges intact. Dust wrapper moderate shelf wear chip; unclipped 3.00 protected in new clear sleeve. Jacket design by A. Ivancich; spine titles on orange field. Classic portrait of Hemingway holding one of his cats at back panel. Ernest Hemingway's first novel in a decade - since For Whom the Bell Tolls - holds the essential emotion of that phenomenally successful book. In 'Across the River and into the Trees' there is a concept of the same intensity. Like the story of the Spanish civil war which was centered upon a microcosm of action - the tense last days of an American in the midst of a group of guerrilla fighters the story limits its scope to a very short span in the life of an American. This story builds its bridge not of days but of hours and it is even more charged with feeling. For many readers it will evoke a memorable earlier novel A Farewell to Arms because the background again is Italy and again it is war. This newer war however is already in the past. The fighting is over; the reader hears only its echoes. Venice is the scene. Colonel Richard Cantwell of the United States Army is the principal figure and perhaps the most complex character Hemingway ever presented. 308 pages. Insured post. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Book. Charles Scribner's Sons Hardcover‎

‎Original price 50 cents-Complete and unabridged-4.25 x 6.375 in- Undated with copyright 1950-MCML-Tight and unmarked- tear on lower spine-wear on covers-early printing of this title- advertisement on the last page page 320 promoting "Another Big Dell Novel Now on the newsstands - Slogum House - by Mari Sandoz.-" In the fall of 1948 Ernest Hemingway made his first extended visit to Italy in thirty years. His reacquaintance with Venice a city he loved provided the inspiration for Across the River and into the Trees the story of Richard Cantwell a war-ravaged American colonel stationed in Italy at the close of the Second World War and his love for a young Italian countess. A poignant bittersweet homage to love that overpowers reason to the resilience of the human spirit and to the world-weary beauty and majesty of Venice Across the River and into the Trees stands as Hemingway's statement of defiance in response to the great dehumanizing atrocities of the Second World War. Hemingway's last full-length novel published in his lifetime it moved John O'Hara in The New York Times Book Review to call him "the most important author since Shakespeare." Fine in a near fine first state dust jacket with light wear to the extremities. Jacket design by A. Ivancich. Jacket photograph by Paul Radkai. Set in Venice at the close of World War II Across the River and into the Trees is the bittersweet story of a middle-aged American colonel scarred by war and in failing health who finds love with a young Italian countess at the very moment when his life is becoming a physical hardship to him. It is a love so overpowering and spontaneous that it revitalizes the man's spirit and encourages him to dream of a future even though he knows that there can be no hope for long. Spanning a matter of hours Across the River and into the Trees is tender and moving yet tragic in the inexorable shadow of what must come. ‎Across The River and Into The Trees: Publisher's Presentation Copy‎

‎NY: Charles Scribner's Sons. F. 1950. 1st Edition. Hardcover. First Edition First Printing. One of 24 copies specially bound for p resentation. Printed from the uncorrected sheets. Inked hand written note on the rear flyleaf from publisher Charles Scribner reads: This is one of twenty sic copies printed before certain errors in the te xt were discovered. It is also bound in a different cloth than the regu lar edition. Laid in loose is a typed on typing paper list of the th ree errors with page numbers and corrections. The book is bound in blue buckram like cloth with titles and horizontal ruling to the spine and the author's name to upper board gilt. All known copies have the same binding and error sheet but a slightly different hand written ex planation: "this is one of 24 copies bound in a different cloth from the regular edition and has the above errors in the pages which caught and corrected after 24 sheets had been run. Hemingway and I have give n these 24 sheets to friends - none were sold - Charles Scribner" Thi s copy would appear to be one of the earliest copies issued before th e correct number of error copies had been found and hence the "20" co pies note. We are unable to find any other copies with this notation. This then is the True First edition of this book as the printing was corrected after these 24 copies. A FINE copy without dj as issued. .
