HEMINGWAY Ernest.
Across the River and Into the Trees.
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1950. Octavo. Publisher's presentation binding of blue cloth titles and horizontal ruling to spine and author's name to upper board gilt. In a blue half morocco solander box. An excellent copy. First edition first printing one of 24 copies specially bound for presentation. Tipped-in to the rear free endpaper is a pencilled note by Charles Scribner below a printed list of the errata noting that "this is one of 24 copies bound in a different cloth from the regular edition and has the above errors in the pages which caught and corrected after 24 sheets had been run. Hemingway and I have given these 24 sheets to friends - none were sold - Charles Scribner". Grissom records an apocryphal anecdote from David Randall manager of Scribner's Rare Books Division who claimed that 25 copies were bound up from the discarded sheets of the entire first edition. Grissom noted that "it would be much more likely that the presentation copies were printed per usual as advance copies from the flawed early plates" as this copy makes clear was indeed the case. HEMINGWAY ERNEST
Across The River And Into The Trees
New York: Scribner’s 1950. First American Edition. A fine copy in a second state dust jacket with some tiny nicks but an unfaded spine. Often referred to inaccurately as a second “issue.†Hanneman calls this a state and while the terms are often used interchangeably their meanings are substantially different. A state refers to a change made during the printing while an issue refers to the sequence of publication. In other words had this been an issue rather than a state it would have been available for purchase later than the first. In the interest of honest and full disclosure setting strenuous efforts aside this cataloguer admits to the occasional past sin of using these terms carelessly. Scribner’s unknown
