Hemingway Ernest
For Whom The Bell Tolls
Charles Scribner’s Sons New York 1940; First Edition; 8vo 471 pages; publisher’s beige cloth; black spine titles over a red field. Hemingway’s dramatic semi-autobiographical novel of fate courage and death in the Spanish Civil War released to considerable critical acclaim and recommended for the 1941 Pulitzer prize though none was awarded that year. Source of the Paramount 1943 Oscar nominated film of the same name directed by Sam Wood and starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman. Hemingway dedicated this book to comrade lover and indefatigable war correspondent Martha Gellhorn whom he married the following year. Very Good pastedown margins lightly tanned. In the second issue dust jacket which bears photographer Lloyd Arnold’s credit beneath the rear panel photo publisher’s price of $2.75 and Henry Seidel Canby blurb on the front flap. Arnold was chief photographer for the Sun Valley Co. and its celebrated Idaho hunting lodge then in its infancy which was frequented by Ernest and Mary Hemingway. He and his wife Tillie became such fast friends and hunting companions of the Hemingways that the two couples even purchased adjoining cemetery plots in Ketchum. However when Jack Hemingway’s wife died and later his daughter the Arnolds relinquished both their spaces for the Hemingway family burials. In 2005 after Tillie’s death at age 99 both the Arnolds’ remains were moved from their respective California and Iowa locations and reinterred at the Ketchum cemetery as near as possible to their old friends. Lloyd Arnold’s 1969 book "Riding High With Hemingway" details many of the Arnolds’ personal experiences with the Hemingways. Dust jacket Very Good with light to moderate wear at the corners and spine panel extremities. No price clipping no ownership signatures or any other markings of any kind. Text clean crisp bright binding tight sound and square. Charles Scribner’s Sons hardcover

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1940. Early Scribner edition; unstated 1940 at copyright. Navy full cloth boards w/silver stamped Hemingway signature and quill gilt and silver spine titles some rub shelf wear. Deckled pages good no writing; toned. Bind good; hinges intact. Tells the story of Robert Jordan a young American in the International Brigades attached to an anti-fascist guerilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As an expert in the use of explosives he is assigned to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia. Told primarily through the thoughts and experiences of Robert Jordan a character inspired by Hemingway's own experiences in the Spanish Civil War. Robert Jordan is an American who travels to Spain to oppose the fascist forces of Generalsimo Francisco Franco. A superior has ordered him to travel behind enemy lines and destroy a bridge using the aid of a group of guerrillas who have been living in the mountains nearby. Robert Jordan encounters one of those in their camp Mara a young Spanish native whose life has been shattered by the outbreak of the war. His strong sense of duty clashes with both Republican leader Pablo's unwillingness to commit to a covert operation and his own joie de vivre that is kindled by his newfound love for Mara. The novel graphically describes the unutterable brutality of civil war. 507 pages. Insured post. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Book.
