HEMINGWAY Ernest
THE ONLY NICE PEOPLE IN CANADA
Vancouver: William Hoffer. 1969 spurious date 1979. Large sheet folded to make four quarto pages the letter occupying the inner two pages cream stock printed in black & red. Fine. "500 copies of this letter to Sylvia Beach have been printed in matching French & English editions. Toronto May 1969. concitate requiescatis torquamini in sepulcris." Text of a 6 Nov. 1923 letter on Toronto Star letterhead to Sylvia Beach famed Paris bookseller Shakespeare & Co. and publisher of ULYSSES. "It is impossible to live here.It is impossible for me to do any writing of my own. Also the people are all merde.Canadians are all tapettes at heart. There are no gigolos because no old women have money. Otherwise they would all be. It is a dreadful country.I would like to swing a crochet on the menton of Canada. I would like to hit all Canada a coup bas." Here he anticipates Monty Python. He also complains of not having time to mail out copies of "3 sturries and ten pums" to any reviewers. Sends his best to McAlmon and Adrienne. "O'Brien has taken the story Muy Old Man for The Best and Worst Stories of 1923." Hemingway hated Toronto because the Toronto Star overworked him and he & his editor didn't like each other and because there have always been reasons to dislike Toronto just as there are very very many reasons to dislike Hemingway as a person. William Hoffer a late Vancouver antiquarian bookseller eccentric vitrolic often brilliant sometimes right found every reason and invented a number of his own to dis Toronto. This nicely printed stink bomb was issued for distribution at the Toronto Antiquaran Book Fair 9-11 May 1979. Note: light parcel any default shipping may be reduced. First printing. Broadside. William Hoffer. 1969 [spurious date] Paperback
