Printed at the Three Mountains Press and for sale at Shakespeare & Company: Paris 1924. First edition of Hemingway's second published work one of of 170 numbered copies printed on Rives hand-made paper this is number 90. Quarto original tan printed <span class="glossaryQtip qTip">boards</span> with black lettering and publisher's device printed over a collage of red-lettered facsimile newspaper items <span class="glossaryQtip qTip">woodcut</span> <span class="glossaryQtip qTip">frontispiece</span> portrait of Hemingway from a portrait by Henry Strater all edges uncut. In fine condition. Housed in a custom folding cloth chemise and half morocco slipcase with splitting to the chemise. One of Hemingway's rarest books second only to Three Stories and Ten Poems both because of the limited number of copies printed and its fragile nature. A superior example. Ezra Pound had arranged with William Bird the owner of The Three Mountains Press to publish a series of six volumes by contemporary writers under the collective title 'The Inquest into the State of Contemporary English Prose'. Contributors included Pound himself Ford Maddox Ford William Carlos Williams and Ernest Hemingway. For his contribution Hemingway selected the 6 sketches that had already been published in The Little Review in 1924 to which he added a further 12. The resulting publication was titled in our time an ironic reference to the twelfth line of the Episcopalian Evening Prayer: "Give peace in our time O Lord". In our time is certainly one of Hemingway's rarest both because of the limited number of copies printed and its fragile nature. A series of short vignettes the work is a powerful statement on war and includes chapters written during Hemingway's recent visits to Spain and the fictional account of the death of Maera a renowned matador. In his review in The Dial October 1924 Edmund Wilson asserted "I am inclined to think that this little book has more artistic dignity than any other book that has been written by an American about the period of the war" and called it "a harrowing record of the barbarities of the period in which we live". Ezra Pound edited in our time and it was later expanded into the American edition of 1925 in which these 18 chapters appeared interspersed among other classic Hemingway short stories. Hollywood: Universal Pictures 1946. Vintage 11 x 14" color studio lobby card. Some dusty smudges short creased tear and a narrow surface scrape in blank areas of lower margin identifying numerals on blank reverse along with remnants of paper mounting tape and two paperclip rust marks which do not appear on recto otherwise a near very good copy. Vintage studio lobby card depicting a tense moment between characters portrayed by Ava Gardner and Edmond O'Brien. This was the first of several screen adaptations of Hemingway's 1927 short story and the screenplay was by Anthony Veiller with uncredited contributions by Richard Brooks and John Huston produced by Mark Hellinger and directed by Robert Siodmak. THE KILLERS was nominated in four categories for the 1947 Academy Awards. This was Burt Lancaster's first important film role and it made him a star. Los Angeles: Leland Hayward Productions - Warner Bros. Pictures 1958. Vintage color studio lobby card 11 x 14". Faint tide mark appropriately in extreme lower margin not approaching image else fine. Card #7 of the series featuring an image of the old man's struggle with his catch. Peter Viertel wrote the screenplay for this adaptation of Hemingway's Pulitzer-Prize winning novella starring Spencer Tracy as the Old Man a role for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor under the direction of John Sturges. Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms October 22 1956 Screenplay by Hecht Ben. Los Angeles: The Selznick Company 1956 Hardcover. Original screenplay. 3 191 leaves. A relatively early pre-production script for the second adaptation of Hemingway's great novel of the First World War. The film starred Rock Hudson and Jennifer Jones under the direction of King Vidor after John Huston left the project. While many versions of this script exist this text would seem to be the one David O. Selznick presented to John Huston when the director was assigned to the picture. Selznick apparently began working with Huston about October 25 1956 three days after the date on the title page of this script. There is a "foreword" dated November 5 1956 as well suggesting this script was printed in late 1956 during the pre-productin process.A fine copy in fine canary yellow printed studio covers. Bound with brad brads. There is a printed cover sheet with a detachable receipt as the first page of the script. The script is numbered so that the studio could keep track of the script. The receipt is still attached. While the cover indicates the order of colors for revision pages this copy does not have any revised pages. he production script was 173 leaves; the post-production as-film script was 152 pages suggesting that this early version has considerable content not available elsewhere.<br/><br/>A Farewell to Arms Original Screenplay for the 1957 film Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox 1957. Photographs. Set of four press photographs announcing Hemingway was very much alive after a plane crash in Africa January 1954
Hemingway survived two plane crashes in Africa in January 1954. He and his wife Mary Welsh essentially unhurt from the first crash and picked up by a sightseeing boat went down a second time when their rescue plane crashed and burned. Several newspapers reported the Hemingways dead but this false story was soon corrected. Newspapers printed the good news that the internationally renown writer was alive with images of a robust and smiling Hemingway. We offer four of these press photos each with a description attached on aging paper and stamped on verso by the news service. Each is 7"x 9" curled at the edges but otherwise in very good condition. The descriptions attached at the lower edge of each photo are on browned paper brittle at the lower edge where the page remains partially attached to the photograph.
