Une première mouture de l'ouvrage avait été présentée par Renan au concours du prix Volney de 1847, remis par l'Institut de France pour « récompenser les plus importants travaux du monde savant international » dans les domaines de la philologie et de la linguistique. Il en est le lauréat pour cette année. À l'origine, cette histoire ne devait être qu'une rapide introduction à une étude comparative des langues sémitiques, inspirée par le travail de Franz Bopp sur les langues indo-européennes. Bien qu'il soit aujourd'hui dépassé, cet ouvrage a inspiré toute une génération de chercheurs sur le sujet. Étiquette de la librairie ancienne et moderne E. Nourry à Paris.
