The Age of Reason.
London: Hamish Hamilton 1947. First edition of Sartre's classic novel. Octavo original cloth. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with unnecessary enforcement to the rear. Jacket design by Michael Ayrton. Translated from the French by Eric Sutton. First editions are uncommon. The Age of Reason is concerned with Sartre's conception of freedom as the ultimate aim of human existence. The work seeks to illustrate the existentialist notion of ultimate freedom through presenting a detailed account of the characters' psychologies as they are forced to make significant decisions in their lives. As the novel progresses character narratives espouse Sartre's view of what it means to be free and how one operates within the framework of society with this philosophy. The novel is a fictional reprise of some of the main themes in his major philosophical study Being and Nothingness 1943. One of the notions is that ultimately a person's freedom is unassailable as it is fundamentally part of the nothingness that is the imagination and so cannot be taken away or destroyed. The Devil & The Good Lord and Two Other Plays "Kean" and "Nekrassov"
New York: Alfred A. Knopf. Near Fine in Very Good dj. 1960. First American Edition. Hardcover. minimal shelfwear to book a review copy with original publisher's slip laid in one-time owner's address label at bottom of front endpaper; jacket a little faded at the spine with one tiny closed tear at top of rear panel tiny nicks at lower spine extremities. The jacket blurb calls the title play "Sartre's most ambitious work for the theatre. Outstripping in scope and magnitude his previous plays this dramatic epic which calls for a cast of over ninety and takes some four hours to perform is a synthesis of the basic tenets of Sartre's philosophy. It is based on the Peasants' Revolt in fourteenth-century Germany a period that he considers closer to the modern epoch than any other; and through the actions of his protagonist Goetz the bastard son of a noble Sartre demonstrates man's inability to achieve the absolute either through good or evil." The original Paris production of the play ran for about nine months in 1951/52 but as far as I know has never been staged in America at least not on Broadway -- perhaps unsurprisingly given the massive cast and other production requirements. And how much would you invest in a four-hour drama about the German Peasants' Revolt Thought so. The second play in the book however "Kean" Sartre's adaptation of an Alexandre Dumas drama about actor Edmund Kean was staged on Broadway during the 1961/62 season -- further adapted into a musical comedy! The third play "Nekrassov" is "a political satire in the form of a farce a lampoon of anti-communist journalism in France." . Alfred A. Knopf hardcover books

The Wall and Other Stories.
New York: New Directions 1948. Signed limited edition one of only 25 copies. Octavo original Japanese vellum spine over patterned boards top edge gilt. Translated by Lloyd Alexander. In near fine condition. Rare and desirable. One of Sartre's greatest existentialist works of fiction The Wall contains the only five short stories he ever wrote. Set during the Spanish Civil War the title story crystallizes the famous philosopher's existentialism. The Wall the lead story in this collection introduces three political prisoners on the night prior to their execution. Through the gaze of an impartial doctor-seemingly there for the men's solace-their mental descent is charted in exquisite often harrowing detail. And as the morning draws inexorably closer the men cross the psychological wall between life and death long before the first shot rings out. This brilliant snapshot of life in anguish is the perfect introduction to a collection of stories where the neurosis of the modern world is mirrored in the lives of the people that inhabit it .
