Five engraved plates including frontispiece in each volume by De Longueil Louis le Grand and J.J. Pasquier after Ch. Eisen. Titles printed in red and black.<br> <br> Contemporary calf. Boards triple-ruled in gilt with floral corner devices. Spines stamped in gilt and each volume with two red morocco spine labels lettered in gilt. Gilt board edges. Marbled endpapers. All edges dyed red. Some rubbing to boards and edges. Spines with some flaking. Boards with some soiling mainly volume IV. Some chipping to heads and tails of spines and some light repair to head and tail of spines of volumes I and IV. A marginal tear to leaves N9 and N10 of volume II tear just barely touching text on N9 and not touching text on N10. Overall a very good and crisp copy.<br> <br> The publication history of the book is complicated. According to McEachern "In November 1761 publisher Nicolas-Bonaventure Duchesne signed an agreement with Jean Néaulme a Dutch publisher chosen. to undertake an edition parallel to Duchesne's for distribution outside France. Duchesne's first edition appeared in two formats: a duodecimo with the false imprint 'A Amsterdam Chez Jean Neaulme' and an octavo with the false imprint 'A La Haye Chez Jean Néaulme.' The sheets of the duodecimo edition were printed first and the pages then re-imposed for printing in octavo." Although it is suggested that the twelvemo edition was printed first but the octavo edition may have been issued first McEachern goes on to say "the question of the order of printing has not yet been resolved to everyone's satisfaction." While Jean Néaulme of Amsterdam is given as the printer it was in actuality printed by Parisian printer and publisher Nicolas Bonaventure Duchesne. When this work was published in the spring of 1762 it was banned by the Paris parliament and burned in public in Rousseau's home town of Geneva and in Paris forcing Rousseau to flee. This title was referred to by Goethe as "the natural gospel of education" and had great influence on Rousseau's European contemporaries especially educators. Despite the controversy Émile contributed mightily to the Romantics appreciation of nature and to the notion of the "noble savage."<br> <br> "To be good is to exist in accordance with the intrinsic potentialities of one's nature and Émile seeks to trace the natural development of a human being brought up in the country away from the nefarious influence of contemporary social life. From this point of view the work is not just a manual of education but as Rousseau himself points out a philosophical treatise on the goodness of human nature. It is less concerned with laying down the practical details of a specific pedagogic method than with describing the fundamental principles which underlie the whole of man's development from infancy to maturity. The whole work calls for 4 volumes. Three engraved frontispieces at books one two and three. Small 8vo. Leather spine dulled and dry with title labels missing. Rousseau considered it to be the "best and most important" of all his writings. During the French Revolution Emile served as the inspiration for what became a new national system of education. Emile was banned in Paris and Geneva. The first edition was publicly burned in 1762.The publisher Jean Neaulme had stipulated a contract for the printing and parallel distribution of the work in Holland and Great Britain in 1761 with the agreement that the publisher Duchesne to whom Rousseau himself had delivered the original manuscript would send copy. The first setbacks then took over the book's fate. Both the author and Duchesse deliberately delayed delivery times. This was the effect of the controversy over Rousseau's rejection of original sin and divine revelation for which Rousseau was forced to flee Paris for Switzerland. Jean Neulme hardcover

Here is a Very Good Plus copy of an early edition first published in 1762 issued five years prior to his death. Full smooth-leather binding with gilt decorations and a red label on the spine with gilt titling. Clean text; 207 pages including a "Table des Matieres" in the rear. Illustrated with a steel engraving of Mercury opposite page 40. Bumping and rather extensive rubbing to the spine; the label however is in good condition and the gilt peeks through. The textblock is unfoxed with only occasional spots. A very attractive little volume of this major literary work that still presents very well indeed. First Thus. Full-Leather. First published in English in 1762 this is an early translation of Rousseau's revolutionary treatise on the education of young people. Published in France under the title of Emile or On Education these volumes expound Rousseau's views of human nature juvenile psychology and what we ought to strive for in shaping the minds and lives of the young. The author implores teachers to examine their pupils and to consider what they can learn from them rather than the other way round. Rousseau's work proved controversial as it recommended that young people receive no formal education until adolescence and that young people find religion freely and through nature rather than exposing them to a formal church setting. Rousseau's Emile would be censored and the author was forced to move around Switzerland until he fled to England to escape persecution from religious authorities. Rousseau's work also includes a section on education for women a work which remains hotly debated by modern-day feminist scholars. The author here writes on the natural goodness of humanity and provides a system for tutors to elevate the best of human nature in their pupils. Translations into several European languages quickly followed the first printing in French in 1762."Few books have had had greater immediate effect on English educational thought than Rousseau's <i>Émile</i>. Coming at a time when new stirrings disturbed the calm waters of the eighteenth century English education its ideas fused with those of radical and scientific thinkers to create new insights into children into methods of teaching and the scope of the educational process and these gave new directions to English educational thought.
