Imitated and adapted to his original Music by Charles Burney. The Second Edition. London: Printed for T. Becket and P.A. de Hondt 1766. Fourth edition of The Critic second edition of The Cunning-Man. Octavo. 10 98; 8 30 1 adv. 1 blank pp. Engraved title page to The Critic. The Cunning-Man complete with the publisher's notice dated Nov. 29 1766 at the end advertising translated works by Rousseau. Contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards expertly rebacked to style. With the bookplate of J.S. Bentley to the front paste down endpaper and that of Thomas Merriman to the front free endpaper. A very good copy. The Critic was first performed 30 October 1779; the first edition was issued in 1781 this the fourth edition was issued later in the same year. The Prologue is by Richard Fitzpatrick. Another huge success for the celebrated dramatist The Critic is ".an exuberant burlesque on the problems of producing a play. The work under rehearsal by its distraught producer is 'The Spanish Armada' a ludicrous parody of the modish tragic drama of the day. The action of the main play continues with undiminished vivacity to the end" OCEL. Playwright producer and theater manager and owner Richard Brinsley Sheridan 1751-1816 made his reputation as a dramaturge in 1775 with The Rivals. Success followed success celebrity ensued and soon Sheridan bought out actor playwright and impresario David Garrick's share in the Drury Lane Theatre and became its manager. The fabulous success of his School For Scandal gave him the wherewithal to become the sole proprietor of the Drury Lane Theatre in 1779. He was considered the true heir of Garrick the most respected and celebrated theatrical personage of his age and later became a MP. The Cunning-Man is Charles Burney's translation and adaptation of the libretto and songs to Rousseau's pastoral opera Le Devin du Village The Village Soothsayer. 1752. "As with many French operas Rousseau's Le devin du village was first staged for the court appearing at Fountainebleau on 18 October 1752. The work was then performed at the Paris Op�ra on 1 March 1753. The historical importance of this short interm� is closely tied to its role in the famous Querelle de bouffons a debate about the merits of French serious opera in comparison to Italian comic opera especially Pergolesi's La serva padrona. "Rousseau applied the principles of Italian buffo style to Le devin showing a preference for simple melodies in his airs and although the subject matter is typical of comic opera's interest in paysannerie see Gr�try's Le Huron the use of recitative explains why Le devin appeared at the Op�ra. "Le devin's popularity is evident in that it was parodied by the Com�die-Italienne and later arranged in English by Charles Burney. However Rousseau's outspoken nature caused problems for him at the Op�ra when he wrote an indictment against French opera titled Lettre sur la musique fran�aise late in 1753. While Rousseau was no longer welcome at the Op�ra Le devin continued to be performed until the early nineteenth century. Berlioz famously criticized the work though and argued that Rameau's music was far superior to Rousseau's diminutive interm�" University of North Texas Libraries. II-IV" and "Cantates allégoriques." Volume II "Epitres Liv. I-II" "Allégories Liv. I-II" "Epigrammes Liv. I-IV" and "Poésies diverses." Contemporary full red morocco attributed to Derôme Le Jeune unsigned but with dentelles à l'oiseau characteristic of Derôme to volume two. Covers with gilt triple fillet border smooth spines decoratively tooled in gilt in panels with two olive green morocco gilt lettering labels board edges with single gilt fillet gilt dentelles à l'oiseau all edges gilt bright blue endpapers. The absolute bare minimum of rubbing to extremities. A wonderful copy. "Derôme was born on October 1 1731 became a master binder on March 31 1761 and was elected one of the Gardes en Charge of the Community of the Master Binders and Guilders of the City and University of Paris on May 10 1773 at the same time as François Gaudreau binder to the dauphine. He died around the year 1788 i.e. 1790. the designs used by Derôme on his bindings are extremely graceful and rival those of Padeloup to which they have a strong resemblance. It is be true that he purchased the material and stamps of this binder at the sale of his effects after his death it explains to some extent the great similarity of the ornamentation employed by the two artists. Derôme executed many mosaic bindings but his great renown has been gained by his dentelles especially those in which he introduced a little bird with outstretched wings and which are in consequence termed dentelles à l'oiseau" Fletcher W.I. Bookbinding in France. Marius Michel in La Reliure Française says that Derôme sought and found in the industries of his time the elements for new decoration and crowned his efforts with the dentelles to which he has given his name and which are distinguished from preceding ones by not being made up of the same tools in repetition but in combination thus affording more variety. "Jean-Baptiste Rousseau April 6 1671- March 17 1741 was a French poet. He was born in Paris the son of a shoemaker and was well educated. As a young man he gained favour with Boileau who encouraged him to write. Rousseau began with the theatre for which he had no aptitude. A one-act comedy Le Café failed in 1694 and he was not much happier with a more ambitious play Le Flatteur 1696 or with the opera Venus et Adonis 1697. In 1700 he tried another comedy Le Capricieux which had the same fate. He then went with Tallard as an attaché to London and in days when literature still led to high position seemed likely to achieve success. "His misfortunes began with a club squabble at the Café Laurent which was much frequented by literary men and where he indulged in lampoons on his companions. A shower of libellous and sometimes obscene verses was written by or attributed to him and at last he was turned out of the café. At the same time his poems as yet printed only singly or in manuscript acquired him a great reputation due to the dearth of genuine lyrical poetry between Jean Racine and André de Chénier. In 1701 he was made a member of the Académie des inscriptions; he was offered though he had not accepted profitable places in the revenue department; he had become a favourite of the libertine but influential côterie of the Temple; and in 1710 he presented himself as a candidate for the Académie française. "Verses more offensive than ever were handed round and gossip maintained that Rousseau was their author. Legal proceedings of various kinds followed and Rousseau ascribed the lampoon to Joseph Saunin. In 1712 Rousseau was prosecuted for defamation of character and on his non-appearance in court was condemned to perpetual exile. He spent the rest of his life in foreign countries except for a clandestine visit to Paris in 1738; he refused to accept the permission to return which was offered him in 1716 because it was not accompanied by complete rehabilitation. "Prince Eugène and then other persons of distinction took him under their protection during his exile and at Soleure he printed the first edition of his poetical works. He met Voltaire in Brussels in 1722. Voltaire's Le Pour et le contre is said to have shocked Rousseau who expressed his sentiments freely. At any rate the latter had thenceforward no fiercer enemy than Voltaire. His death elicited from Jean-Jacques Lefranc marquis de Pompignan an ode that was perhaps better than anything of Rousseau's own work. That work may be roughly divided into two sections. Samuel Rousseau 1763–1820 was a British Oriental scholar and printer. He compiled the first Arabic-English dictionary and translated and printed the first English language editions of several important Arabic works. He was related to Jean-Jacques Rousseau. He started his printing career as an apprentice to John Nichols. Self-taught in Latin Greek Hebrew Persian Arabic and the Syriac language after he completed his apprenticeship he set up his own printing business in Leather Lane Holborn and later moved to Wood Street Clerkenwell where he established the Arabic Press. He commissioned the making of Arabic type and set about translating and printing several classic works of Arabic literature. The press was unfortunately short-lived. London, printed by S.
