This is the transcript of the infamous murder trial of Matthew Fluornoy Ward in Elizabethtown Kentucky. Matt Ward was charged with the murder of Louisville High School principal William H.G. Butler. Mr. Butler had whipped Mr. Ward's younger brother and accused him of being a liar. On November 2nd 1853 Mr. Ward entered the school building seeking an explanation and an apology from Mr. Butler. Not satisfied with Mr. Butler's response Mr. Ward called Mr. Butler a "dd liar" and a "dd scoundrel" pulled his pistol from his right pocket and shot Mr. Butler in the chest. "The inn has played a large part in the domestic life of England down the centuries. Always intimately associated with the characteristics of the English people as a center for social life it still retains a warm place in their hearts. The story of the tavern therefore is associated with the tale of the road and English wayfaring life. Love of travel is a strong characteristic of the English race yet it co-exists with a feeling for home comforts and a desire to be reminded of familiar things. Thus it is from the earliest times that the inn in spite of its widened functions has at each stage of its development retained the piquant element of domesticity. The old inns of England are unlike those of other countries. The majority are genuine survivals; they are records of other times and customs and they have a symbolic value for the ordinary traveler. They are generally simple in character but many have undergone alterations and changes corresponding with each era of social progress. The inns of each period especially such as remain intact and unaltered could be described in any treatise dealing with the recognized phases of house building; collectively they present a subject for a monograph. . . London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd. 1960. Octavo green boards hardcover 251 pp. Near-Fine with neat former-owner bookplate; in a Very Good mylar protected dust jacket. Jan a Czech refugee who joined the French Air Force in the war as an air gunner was shot down over Germany. While sheltering in a farmhouse he found a motherless Alsatian pup and decided to adupt it. Their adventures getting back to the French line were the first of many they were to share during the next thirteen years. Jan named the pup Antis. After the fall of France Jan with six other Czechs and Antis managed to make their way south. At Sete they were engaged by some high-ranking army officers to fly to Algiers. Shot down over the sea Jan and Antis were rescued by an Italian convoy only to be sunk by a British warship and again rescued. Safely arrived in England Jan was accepted for training by the R.A.F. and managed to evade the Service regulation forbidding pets in camp! His first operational flight over enemy territory was made with Antis stowed away in the bomber. In all Antis made seven of these trips and was twice wounded in doing so. After the war Jan returned to Czechoslovakia with Antis. Their adventures during this period provide some of the most exciting incidents in the whole book. The story ends with the death of Antis at thirteen. By then he had become the first non-British dog to win the Dicken Medal -- the animal’s V.C. George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., (1960). hardcover books

Presentation copy with printed presentation note addressed to the Liverpool Library completed in manuscript and signed by Richardson bound into Vol. I. Liverpool Library labels on front covers and free endpapers of both volumes. <p>First Edition of Chadwick's collected works prefaced with a biographical essay by Richardson. In 1838 Chadwick who was then the secretary of the Poor Law Commissioners initiated a series of investigations into the living conditions of London's working poor and pauper classes. The findings of these investigations published in 1842-43 resulted in the passage of the Public Health Act of 1848 and a number of other important public health reforms. Chadwick was the first to advocate national responsibility for proper drainage street cleaning lighting and water supply and health care; the principles he enunciated form the basis of public health as we know it today.</p> <p>This copy of The Health of Nations was presented by Richardson to the Liverpool Library on Jan. 24 1889. The presentation notice reads: "Dear Sir My much esteemed friend Mr. Edwin Chadwick C.B. this day entering his ninetieth year desires me to present in his name the two accompanying volumes of "The Health of Nations" to the library of your Institution. I am Dear Sir Faithfully yours B. W. Richardson signature in ms. The Librarian Liverpool Library Liverpool last 3 words in Richardson's ms." </p> . Longmans unknown books
