En même temps que le Journal amusant parut de 1856 à 1904 Le Petit journal pour rire version « populaire » de format plus petit et de huit pages moins cher aussi dont la plupart de ses illustrations étaient reprises du Journal amusant. Le premier rédacteur en chef en fut Nadar. Il eut pour directeur Eugène Philipon puis Th. le Cerf. À partir du numéro 9 la première de couverture présenta une composition originale laquelle se para de couleurs à partir du numéro 50. De 1859 à 1889 Grévin en fut l'auteur puis à partir de 1889 B. Bel exemplaire malgré ces défauts, complet, cartonnage décoratif.
