The Christening Cake a New Nursery Ballad.
London: John Lee 440 West Strand 1842. . 15 1pp. sm. 8vo. A very attractive copy in the original cream cloth wrappers gilt-titled with the royal thistle. Fourth edition apparently the earliest one to survive. It is easy to see why this charming "nursery ballad" was read to pieces. Its subject was topical: the christening of Victoria and Albert’s first son Edward on January 25 1842. Evidently the Queen was expected as the Morning Post put it the next morning to order "hostilities to commence against" the splendid christening cake "but Her Majesty appeared unwilling to spoil this remarkable specimen of first-rate confectionary and it therefore remained in statu quo." Hence this poem: In matchless beauty stood the Cake The glory of the day; And now each lady hop’d to take A little bit away. A sugar arm or little leg A relic e’er so small; A feather from the Eagle’s wing - That would be best of all. . . . Between them OCLC and JISC/COPAC record only one copy of this fourth edition at the Lilly Library one of the sixth at Aberdeen and one of the seventh at the Victoria and Albert. The Entrance of Havannah.
c1760. 280 by 390mm. 11 by 15.25 inches. Manuscript map in pen and ink en grisaille on paper. View of the mouth of Havana Harbour taken from a shipboard vantage point emphasising the two forts that guarded the mouth: on the left the 'Castillo de los Tres Reyes Magos del Morro' Morro Castle and on the right 'Castillo de San Salvador de la Punta and marking the boom chain barrier stretched between the two. Havana was attacked by the British towards the end of the Seven Years' War and this would seem an appropriate date for this image. Seeing that Morro Castle presented a formidable challenge should it be attacked from the seaward the British simply landed troops on Cuba who approached from the landward side and commenced siege operations on 11th June gradually battering the walls into ruin. A breach was made on 30th July and the castle taken by storm. With the key to its defences lost Havana was quickly compelled to surrender. unknown

With an engraved frontispiece repeated in Vol. II showing a rather dissolute young man in a large library. Contemporary gilt-ruled calf; spines expertly restored with new gilt labels. Bookplate of Walter Jerrold 1865-1929 author and newspaper editor in both volumes. First and apparently only edition although Vol. II has a statement "Second Edition" on the title which seems to be explained by the author’s preface noting an abandoned attempt at serial publication. The work is a series of short tales on subjects such as talking parrots faithful dogs "An Old Woman basted with Butter" and many naval stories including one on the triumphs of a Quaker trader named Obadiah Mousetrap and another on the fate of the tyrannical Captain Bounce. The second volume has more of the same including a few on Irish subjects as well as a racy poem "The Amorous Parson traped." The publisher M. Mechell seems to have succeeded her husband in the printing business around 1747 or 1748. Binding somewhat scratched and rubbed small loss along foot of spine and front board flyleaf loose. A scarce and unsophisticated Glasgow printing of this entertaining guide to money and what might now be termed ‘hustling’ in pursuit thereof often reprinted but now scarce in any form. The earliest surviving edition is London 1684 attributed to ‘N.H.’ though it contains extracts of Henry Peacham 1546-1634 and later editions attribute the work to Alexander Montgomery 1660-1729 the 9th Earl of Eglinton and a Scottish peer. London: Printed for R. Baldwin at the Rose in Pater-Noster-Row circa 1750. . 2 vols. 12mo. Title-leaves which may well be cancels browned at edges from the binding turn-ins with that of Vol. II very slightly chipped at the extreme lower edge otherwise a fine fresh copy. Contemporary calf; recently rebacked with gilt spines and the lower cover to the second volume replaced. Two early ownership inscriptions on front pastedowns S. Warren and S. Skinner along with an early and small printed label showing a sheep or possibly a dog surmounted by a crown and printed "Case F. Shelf 1." On the facing free endpapers is the modern blindstamp "Brewster Rogerson." Apparently one of three issues of what seems to be the same work a series of essays and poems collected by topic e.g. friendship love taste "luxury in eating and drinking" - "A great man loves Champagne and hates Port. . ." Vol. II begins with "Eliza: a Novel" and continues with subjects like"Commerce" "Modern Education" and "Moral Characters." One of the three issues was printed in Birmingham for R. Aris with the title dated 1749 and another in London with the title dated 1751 and the publisher given as "R. Baldwin jun." The online resources give the title for both of these as "The Polite Companion: containing Essays on Various Subjects. Illustrated with Passages from the most excellent Poets Orators Philosophers and Historians." The present issue with the more elaborate title and "R. Baldwin" imprint could have appeared at the same time as Aris’s or perhaps a little later but one would expect the 1751 "R. Baldwin Jun." issue to be subsequent to that for "R. Baldwin" presumably the senior. I hasten to add however that these two Richard Baldwins are hard to distinguish as it is not clear exactly when the senior retired. It also appears that at some point in the early 1750s the junior dropped "jun." from his imprint. All three issues are rare with ESTC OCLC and COPAC locating two copies of this one William and Mary and Yale both conjecturing 1751 as the imprint date. The book itself features an illustrated alphabet "B Was a Blockhead and ne'er learn'd his Book." combined with an inspirational story about a well-behaved foundling with a final page about the history of the book and how the reprint came about. Paperback heavy blue wraps printed in black sewn binding with external knot. According to the document Japanese domination begins with China and the domination of China begins in Manchuria and Mongolia. The Memorial was first printed in 1929 in a Chinese Nationalist publication. Its first appearance in English seems to be in 1931 in the China Critic a Shanghai publication. <br /> <br /> Scholars now believe that the Memorial is a clever piece of anti-Japanese propaganda although whether it was created by Chinese nationalists the KGB or someone else remains unknown. Historian Meirion Harries calls the document "one of the most successful 'dirty tricks' of the twentieth century - a bogus document so brilliantly conceived that thirty years later Westerns were still being taken in by it." The bottom inch of page 131/132 has been torn away impacting the last four lines of text on both pages. An eight-line ink inscription appearing to be in an 18th century hand appear on the errata page "From the Printer to the Reader." listing errors found in the text. Text complete despite pagination. <br> <br> Shelved in Room G. EH Consignment.<br> <br> References: ESTC R21850; Sabin 98500. Henry Vane 1613-1662 emigrated from England to New England in 1635. A member of the most radical wing of the Puritans he was elected governor of Massachusetts in 1636 but returned to join the Long Parliament in 1637. Vane's stay in Massachusetts was tempestuous and he returned to England in 1637 to become a member of the Long Parliament though his interest in New England continued. After the Restoration he was imprisoned for two years convicted of treason and executed. The present text authored by a partisan in favor of Vane includes the speech Vane intended to give from the scaffold but was barred by the court. Original vertically-grained purple cloth upper cover gilt-titled. First and apparently only edition almost certainly by a woman and very rare. The central narrative is of two cousins both girls and the various misfortunes they overcome interspersed with stories which include one about a shepherd "in humble life" and one "Alfred Percy" about the ward of a gentleman nearly killed when the gentleman’s son smashes his head with a cricket bat as is shown in one of the woodcuts. OCLC records a single copy at the Free Library of Philadelphia; COPAC adds one more at the Victoria and Albert.
