‎Map of the Red Sea and Hejaz‎

‎Arabia 1886. 2435 by 1085mm. 95.75 by 42.75 inches. Lithograph dissected and mounted on linen in black and brown sea in sepia wash minor spotting or staining occasional wear to edges. A rare Arabic map of the Red Sea and Hejaz region. Despite the key role that the Arabian Peninsula and waters had played in Mediterranean trade for centuries European cartographers historically paid surprisingly little attention to the area. The lack of rivers and waterways made Arabia particularly difficult to chart but the exploration of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries did see a number of new maps being produced. These however were generally littered with errors which were then compounded as later mapmakers drew on the inaccurate work of their predecessors. The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries however saw the rapid expansion of European empires giving rise to a renewed interest in foreign cultures and religions a trend that came to be known as 'Orientalism'. As a result explorers and cartographers began to venture further into the Arabian Peninsula undertaking expeditions to trace the deep-rooted incense trails and pilgrimage routes to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. Maps began to appear showing the Hajj routes across the peninsula. After annexing Arabia during the sixteenth century the Ottoman Empire exerted various levels of influence; the emergence of Al Saud in the eighteenth century however introduced a rival power. In 1744 the founder of the dynasty Muhammad bin Saud had joined forces with the Wahhabi religious movement and their alliance soon lead to the rapid expansion of their territories and power. Although the first Saudi state was overcome by Mohammed Ali Pasha the Ottoman viceroy of Egypt in 1818 a second state continued to exist in the eastern region of Nejd. Al Saud rule over the Emirate of Nejd was contested throughout the nineteenth century by the Al Rashid dynasty. This map shows the southern portion of the Red Sea bordered on the east by the Arabian peninsula. The majority of the map is taken up by Hejaz the western region of Arabia where the two Holy Cities of Medina and Mecca are located. From 1845 Hejaz was under the direct control of the Ottomans governed by an appointed official known as the Sharif of Mecca. Ottoman influence persisted in the region until the early twentieth century when a popular revolt ousted them from power. In 1825 it was conquered by Ibn Saud who combined the kingdoms of Hejaz and Nejd in 1932 to form Saudi Arabia. Al Saud now controlled almost the entire Arabian peninsula with the exception of Yemen; Ibn Saud's attempts to claim Yemeni land sparked the war of 1934. Interestingly on the present map there is no national boundary drawn between Hejaz and Yemen probably because they were both subsumed under Ottoman control as part of the Egyptian Eyalet. The inset maps offer more detailed views of important cities and ports with two of the urban views depicting specific buildings and walls. Further inland where there were fewer significant settlements general areas are identified while towards the coast numerous towns rivers islands and harbours are labelled. At the bottom of the map the Horn of Africa is partially visible separated from Yemen by the Bab-el-Mandeb strait. We have been unable to trace any other examples of this map in institutions or at auction. unknown‎

‎Mariner's Chest‎

‎Spain c1690. 320 by 740mm. 12.5 by 29.25 inches. Wooden chest clad in vellum manuscript maps with wrought iron handles rivets lock and clasp. A very unusual piece of cartographic history. It was common for seafarers to have sturdy wooden chests for storage whilst on a voyage but the owner of this chest chose to have it covered it with manuscript maps drawn on vellum possibly by their own hand with the decorative ironwork fitted on top. The lid is covered with a map of North and Central America with the Darien Isthmus labelled to the south and decorated with an elaborate compass rose and title cartouche supported by figures of Native Americans. The map on the front is decorated with a title cartouche showing a sea god. The sides are covered with maps of the East and West Indies decorated with ships. It is remarkable that the maps have survived given the treatment they would have encountered at sea. hardcover‎

A good plus copy uncut in the publisher's original orange marbled boards with a printed paper spine label the spine worn and chipped with loss and hinges weak. Relatively scarce in the 21st century though an apparently popular work at the time which saw a second edition in the same year and a third edition in 1825. First edition of a scarce historical romance about Mary Queen of Scots published to coincide with the visit of George IV to Scotland in 1822 the first by a reigning monarch since that of Charles II in 1651.<br /> <br /> A work clearly brimming with Scottish nationalist sentiment the preface by the "authors" states the novel was "sketched some years ago" but was written "when a rumour arose that an unknown author of great power Sir Walter Scott in publishing The Abbott in 1820 was about to bring back to our ken the days and fortunes of Queen Mary."<br /> <br /> However disappointed that Scott only featured Mary while imprisoned rather than covering her reign this novel was published to show that a historical romance "could be used to serve the purposes of contemporary Scottish patriotism" offering "Mary as a sexily vulnerable icon around whom a brotherhood of modern national subjects are confidently expected to rally." This small ABC book with a bright and charming wrapper is decorated in the aesthetic style with large flowers at the corners and a stylized branching flower on the rear wrapper. ‎<p><strong><u>Attempted 'fake-news' to influence British opinion during the War of Polish Succession</u></strong><br /><br />viii pages numbered 9-62</p><p>Title-page and rear free end-paper a little darkened. Title-page with a small bookseller's notation in pencil. Slight fraying to rear lower edge of original cover. Very good condition.</p><p>ESTC: T041409. The Gentleman's Magazine: or Monthly Intelligencer vol. 5 for the year 1735 gives the date of publication as January 1735.</p><p>Dedicated to Lord Harrington then Secretary of State for the Northern Department later the Foreign Office under Prime Minister Robert Walpole this is purportedly a partial translation of a Spanish work entitled "<em>Meditaciones Morales sobre las Reynas Ministros y Confessores del Rey nuestro Sennor desde su veneda hasta estos Tiempos ; puestas en luz para la mayor Instruction y Edificacion de todos Hombres de Intendimento en nuestra querida aunque pobre y affligida Ispagna</em>." No date or author for this work is given and an extensive search of online databases has failed to find any reference to confirm the existence of such a work.</p><p>This supposed partial translation comes from an anonymous writer in "<em>want of Employment in a retreat I seldom stir from</em>" who accordingly "<em>bestow'd some time in learning Spanish</em>" from "<em>such Books as I might the easier understand</em>". Having said this the quality of the translation if that is what it is would have to be classed as of very good quality i.e. not that of an auto-didact.</p><p>The bulk of the text concerns Giulio Alberoni 1664– 1752 Italian cardinal and statesman in the service of Philip V of Spain and his influence upon Spanish diplomacy and domestic policy "<em>who it seems exceeded all others as well in Power as in the Abuse of it</em>."</p><p>The introductory dedication points out to Harrington that he had been a spectator to "<em>most of the Facts my author in this Extract relates or hints at</em>". Indeed as plain William Stanhope he acquired the Harrington title in 1730 he had served as a diplomat in Spain. Given that Alberoni had fallen from grace and was ordered to leave Spain in 1719 it might be wondered why anyone should feel the need to produce a short publication about him in 1735 Apart from vilification of Alberoni and tangentially his protegee the Duke of Ripperda the short-lived Prime Minister of Spain there may be a clue in the request to Harrington in the dedication that "<em>should You find them</em> i.e. the account of Spanish diplomacy and policy <em>to be true and worthy the Attention of THEIR MAJESTIES</em> i.e. King George II and Queen Caroline <em>You are likewise in a Station to make them cast a favourable Eye upon them which is the Height of my Ambition</em>." That this publication was produced in the midst of the War of Polish Succession 1733-1735 which ranged Spain and France against the Austrian Habsburgs likely provides the relevant context to the intentions of the 'translator' and likely author of the so-called extract.</p><p>British diplomatic policy during this period was beset by division between those who wanted to stay out of the conflict and bellicose pro-Austrians willing to intervene amongst whom were King George II and initially Harington. That Britain had remined neutral was in large part due to the stance of Prime Minister Walpole. The role that Britain should play if not as a combatant then as an arbiter was open to political jockeying for position. In February 1734 the British and Dutch had already offered to mediate peace talks between the various combatants. Publishing a text highlighting the weaknesses and past corruption of Spanish polity would at this time most likely be designed to give sustenance to the cause of promoting sympathy for the plight of Austria.</p><p><strong>As this is a high value item the actual shipping cost will be greater than that quoted for a standard shipment. Hand-colored woodcut illustrations throughout printed on one side only with the first and last leaves pasted to the boards as issued; a couple of minor splits at folds but sound. Original orange boards title label as above pasted to the upper board with a hand-colored woodcut of a girl in a red dress dangling the accordion ABC; some wear and edge-spotting. An anonymously-published issue of a charming and clearly popular toy-book; another issue with the same woodcuts though a different illustration on the title-label has the imprint of the Turner and Fisher firm with addresses in Philadelphia and New York. Each leaf has a large decorative initial and a word and illustration to represent the associated letter with overall a very American look with rich colors and unusually charming and primitive woodcuts of well-known animals and objects. The first twenty numbered leaves are verbatim excerpts from titles such as Principles of Human Physiology by William Benjamin Carpenter Outlines of Physiology in Its Relations to Man by John Gray McKendrick. The actual diary starts with the entry of Wednesday January 1st 1851 and continues through September 12 1851. It is followed by what appears to be a short section of notes on Gibraltar including a hand-drawn map. The diary then resumes on September 14 1851 until April 1853 interspersed with annotations on the life of painters and more. A glimpse of the daily life of a 19th Century Londoner. Smooth spine. Title in faded red ink. Rolland Le Vayer de Boutigny 1627-1685 was Master of Requests to Louis XIV and one of his influential advisors. Author of novels plays and short stories as well as political and legal treatises this book reveals that Boutigny was trained as a jurist. Peculatus designates the theft of public funds by those who administer them; it was punished by death under Roman law but not under French law. ""Under the Ancien Régime how many ministers were condemned for peculatus and extortion! How many chambers of justice were instituted to make the financiers who pillaged the treasury disgorge their gains in complicity with the superintendents of finance!"" Dictionnaire de droit criminel Doucet. The treatise on peculatus caused scandal; Boutigny was accused of defending Fouquet who a few years earlier had been arrested and accused of embezzlement which is why he wrote these Observations in dialogue form where he discusses the validity of the death penalty banishment and the history of French law regarding peculatus. This design for a printer's trade card takes the form of the popular "medley" print in which as many examples of the kinds of printing that the firm is able to produce are displayed in ordered chaos spread out as if on a table for viewing. It includes quite a detailed map of Sicily the lyrics to the popular chansons 'Il pleut il pleut bergere' and 'Regne heureux' a rendering of Watteau's painting 'Pierrot' and a calendar for "L'An XI" i.e. 1802. unknown‎

FIRST EDITION with this title; originally published in 1863 by Edward Parrish of Philadelphia under the title Phantom Bouquet: Skeletonizing Leaves and Seed Vessels. Producing skeletonized leaves was a fashionable Victorian pastime which involved removing chlorophyll from leaves to create intricate designs which imitated those left by insects and larvae. The designs were used as borders on photographic portraits and for other decorative purposes. Affectionate photo album memorializing the mostly harmless exploits of an Army coterie of proto-Beatniks stationed in peacetime Europe and making the most of it. Photo album of a young man in the most fortunate of midcentury micro-generations coming of draft age after the war in Korea and before the American war in Vietnam: able to treat their tour of duty as a lark an adventure; an excuse to drink Bavarian beer and go to motorcycle shows; wear Converse and coke-bottle glasses and sign each other's good-bye cards like an affectionate graduating class. This album records the work and play of soldiers and locals in and around U.S. Army Garrison Schweinfurt: home to several thousand U.S. soldiers and personnel in the years after 1945 and clearly remembered with great affection by those lucky enough to see no combat a little adventure and a lot of hanging out.<br /> <br /> A good decade younger than the iconic Beats who wrote the formative texts and dreamed the formative dreams for their disciples and imitators the soldiers pictured here are just the right age to be formed by the late '50s popular notion of carefree bohemian youth so sternly corrected by the Beat originals in question: The "foul word Beatnik" wrote Ginsberg is nothing but a "journalistic sneer." Kerouac meanwhile expressed a dour miserablism over the whole business: "Nothing can be more dreary than coolness . a kind of sociological coolness soon to become a fad up to the mass of middle class youth." Well: they were both right but they were both over 30 by then. The Beat ethos and vestiges of a Beat aesthetic could not be contained; as the album proves even in barracks even under Army discipline and orders the youth with their shabby blazers and glasses of absinthe-substitute knew what cool was.<br /> <br /> Shot by a remarkably skilled amateur photographer or photographers with a fine eye for composition the photographs are technically accomplished with a fine sense of contrast and a keen sensitivity to the opportune moment. At a uniformed military exercise he captures some curious civilian onlookers; out in the surrounding town he takes sensitive candid photos of an impish local toddler strangling her brother. More than this though is the tone of bohemian youth captured both real and aspirational. The heart of the album documents a core group of friends: smoking wearing sunglasses indoors drinking Pernod taking photos reading French newspapers. Throughout the photographer finds time to hunt beauty: men silhouetted against a bleak sky; a young and grim-faced pregnant woman gazing at a leafless tree; cynical children clambering over tank; and of course European women. A captivating series of moments as perfectly framed as any film still. 11'' x 16''. Original oblong photo album lacking original string ties otherwise intact. Paper label mounted to front cover: "Schweinfurt - 1959 / Boudreaux Kites" in pen. 36 album leaves laid in each with black and white photographs mounted to rectos and versos and intact spiderweb tissue guards. Bayonet receipt card for a Francis C. Welch mounted beneath a portrait photo. One greeting card also mounted to first leaf and one additional large 10'' x 8'' photograph laid in. 181 photographs in total. From various views one can see the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge the San Mateo Bridge the High Street Bridge Alcatraz Yerba Buena Island the National Ice & Cold Storage Company and of course the Golden Gate Bridge. ‎Barre VT. 1913. Mounted Photographs EARLY AMERICAN SOCCER TEAM winners of the Vermont League and the 5-A-Side Champions of Vermont in 1913. Four mounted black and white photographs. Three photographs of the fourteen team members as well as trainer secretary and mascot each in different attire. One photo of the five-a-side team with trainer. Two large photographs 43cm; 64cm with mount one medium 31cm 46cm with mount and one small 31cm 39cm with mount. The three larger photographs have titles printed to the mounts; two list the names of the team members. The smaller mount has glue stains to edges and reverse. Contained within the boards of a nineteenth century folio-sized atlas. All mounts bumped and rubbed to edges. Atlas boards heavily battered. A few small marks and blooming to photographs. Good. A rare collection of photographs documenting the winning team of the Vermont soccer league in 1913 the same year of the formation of the United States Football Association now U.S. Soccer and its entry into FIFA. The first president of USFA was G. Randolph Manning an Anglo-German migrant to the USA who was also influential in the popularisation of Association Football in Germany. The winning Vermont team here pictured was reportedly made up largely from Aberdonians who had migrated to Barre from Scotland to work in the granite quarries. [Barre, VT]. 1913 unknown‎

First printed around 1828 by John Metcalf then located in Wendell Massachusetts this copy was after he moved to Northampton around 1833. Published with Johnathan Hunt Butler. A nice imprint of the alphabet and numbers precedes the introduction to the Bible stories. Eighteen nicely illustrated stories with Biblical chapter references follow: Death of Abel; The Flood; Abraham offers up Isaac; Pharaoh and his host drowned in the Red Sea; Samson slayeth the Lion; Samson carrieth away the gates of the city; Absalom slain; Solomon's Judgement; Elijah fed by Ravens; Elijah taken up to heaven Haman hanged; Shadrach Meshach and Abednego in the fiery Furnace; Simeon's Blessing; Joseph flies to Egypt; Woman of Samaria; Ship in a Storm; Judas betrays Christ; and Crucifixion. ‎Plan of Shanghai 1928‎

‎London: Standford's Geog.l Establishment London 21st April 1928. 880 by 1660mm. 34.75 by 65.25 inches. A large coloured lithographed map showing the plan of Shanghai made in 1928. Signed by Commissioner of public works 44 4 by 11 sheets mounted on linen. The map depicts Shanghai city in 1928 with the French Settlements and Shanghai International Settlements hand-coloured in outline in brown and pink. Two lines noted below the title: 1. The Pootung shore is taken from surveys by the Whangpoo Conservancy Board. 2. The French settlement is taken from surveys by the French Municipal Council. The famous Whangpoo Huangpu river in Shanghai is prominently shown from the midpoint of the bottom edge sinuating upwards to the top right corner which divides the settlements to the left and Pootung Pudong to the right. Between the bank of the river and the French settlement are the 'Chinese city' and a district labeled 'Nan Tao' Nan Dao. The "Chinese city" is now called the "Old City" the traditional urban core of Shanghai. Its boundary was formerly defined by a defensive wall. The Old City was the county seat for the old county of Shanghai with the advent of foreign concessions in Shanghai it became just one part of Shanghai's urban core but continued for decades to be the seat of the Chinese authority in Shanghai. It was essentially coterminous with the old Nanshi District - Nan Dao which is now part of Huangpu District. In 1927 in a bid to establish a tangible Chinese authority in Shanghai the Republic of China government established the Special Municipality of Shanghai. The municipal government was moved out of the Old City to near Xujiahui. In 1928 Shanghai City the Old City was reduced to district status under the Special Municipality. In 1930 Shanghai County became a separate parallel administrative unit to the Special Municipality and the county government was moved out to Minhang. This was the end of the Old City's role as the seat of government of Shanghai. From 1928 the Old City was Hunan District; 'Hunan' literally meant 'southern Shanghai'. An exact copy of the map dated to the same day 21st April 1928 was published in Shanghai North-China Daily News and Herald Limited. by permission of the Municipal. It is signed by the same commissioner of public works. We are only aware of a single surviving example that in the Library of Congress Geography and Map Division Washington D.C. Publisher Edward Stanford 1827-1904 rose to prominence during the height of the Victorian age a period defined by technological innovation social upheaval literary excellence and world exploration. In 1853 Stanford became sole proprietor and expanded his shop to 7 and 8 Charing Cross whilst acquiring premises on Trinity Place for a printing works. This solidified Stanford's as the largest and only map maker and seller in London at a time when British colonialism the rise of the railways and the continuing popularity of the Grand Tour. Edward Stanford II took over in 1882 when Stanford's had become the sole agents for Ordnance Survey Maps in England and Wales and in 1887 published Stanford's London Atlas Of Universal Geography dedicated to Queen Victoria on the occasion of her Royal Jubilee and he received his royal warrant as Cartographer to the Queen in 1893. Edward Stanford II died in 1917 and his son Edward Fraser Stanford assumed control of the business in 1917.
