Dressed in Finery--a Tintype Photograph of 8 young people
No place identified: No photographer identified No date c. late 19th c. No binding photograph. Very good . TINTYPE PHOTOGRAPH MELAINOTYPE FERROTYPE. 3 ½" x 5"; image is clear; japanned verso; light scratching to surface; very good plus. A tintype or ferrotype photograph of five young women and three young men most likely taken during the 1890s based on the clothing style. Three men two in Bowler or derby style hats and suits buttoned high. First introduced in England in the 1840s and considered formal wear the Bowler was worn by working classes by the late 19th century. The women are dressed in suits with short jackets a style that emerged in the late 1880s and went on to be a men's wear craze during the 1890s and well into the 1910s. Each person's outfit suggests the wealth of the upper class. Other types of photography had been developed and perfected by the late 19th century but the tintype remained a sturdy inexpensive and quickly developed alternative. Een oud schipper van Monickendam. Rare Pamphlet on the Eighty Years' War.
No place no date 1608. Small 4to 18.0 x 14.6 cm. Engraved title page; five pp. 19th-century marbled wrappers. = A very rare pamphlet in which the anonymous author questions a truce between the Netherlands and Spain. "The Twelve Years' Truce was the name given to the cessation of hostilities between the Habsburg rulers of Spain and the Southern Netherlands and the Dutch Republic as agreed in Antwerp on 9 April 1609 coinciding with the Royal Decree of Expulsion of the Moriscos. It was a watershed in the Eighty Years' War marking the point from which the independence of the United Provinces received formal recognition by outside powers. For Spain the truce was seen as a humiliating defeat as they were forced to make several sacrifices but they scarcely got anything in return" Wikipedia. The engraving shows the Dutch and Spanish engaged in some kind of ritual battle on a beach with shells along the tide line and dunes in the background. According to Tiele the truce was: "een van de aardigst geschrevene blaauwboekjes tegen den vrede" one of the most pleasantly written pamphlets against peace. Paper trimmed to plate edges some light mostly marginal staining small chip to last leaf lower outer corner otherwise very good. Knuttel 1466; Muller 1254b; Tiele 676. unknown

Paris nineteenth century. diamter 160mm 6.25 inches. Prints""Magasin de Bonbons Chocolats Confitures Sirops C is for Chocolatier Engraved trade card. The present print appears to be not a trade card but a product label similar in design and shape to many of those found on food products in nineteenth century France. There is a blank rectangle where the contents of the package could be written by hand and beneath this is a sentence clarifying that the goods come from a """"sweet chocolate jam syrup and liqueur shop"""" trans. It also advertises that they can provide such delights for celebrations including baptisms and marriage. Indeed the image at the centre of the print appears to show a newly married couple leaving the church both elaborately dressed and attended by a small boy and bridesmaid. Four proof plates for Monographiae Insectorum XVIII. In valle Plauensi delectorum. Verzeichnis der merkwürdigsten Insecten welche in Plauischen Grunde gefunden werden. In: W. G. Becker 1799. Der Plauische Grund bei Dresden mit Hinsicht auf Naturgeschichte und schöne Gartenkunst.
Nürnberg Frauenholzische Kunsthandlung 1799. Four loose plates. Folio 24.3 x 18.5 cm or slighly larger. Each finely engraved and carefully hand-coloured. = In 1799 the German historian Wilhelm Gottlieb Becker 1753-1813 published a work in two volumes titled Der Plauische Grund bei Dresden mit Hinsicht auf Naturgeschichte und schöne Gartenkunst. Mit fünf und zwanzig Kupferblättern. Beckers work consists of two volumes issued simultaneously. The first was entirely written by himself the second however was by various other authors. On pages 115-120 is a chapter on the entomology of Plauen not to be confused with the town of Plauen also in Saxonia by Peter Ludwig Heinrich Baron von Block 1764-1818 with very fine highly enlarged illustrations of new and poorly known insects from South Eastern Germany mainly beetles i.e. ten species of Staphylinidae or rove beetles which cover just over half the plates and some Diptera Hymenoptera and Hemiptera. The name of the illustrator remained unknown but recently these four Musterblätter proof plates turned up at auction in a map of printed leaves associated with the renowned German natural history artist engraver zoologist and publisher Jacob Sturm 1771-1848. Although his name is not attached to these leaves the accurate modern style - with a great eye to detail - certainly points strongly in his direction. The usual bibliographies for instance those listed below do not mention the name of the artist of von Block's paper. The word Müster Proof written in an old hand in the lower margin of two plates. Plates somewhat soiled but otherwise in a very good condition. Cat BMNH p. 120; Hagen I p. 58; Horn-Schenkling 1643. Not in Nissen. unknown

Weimar: Friedrich Justin Bertuch 1807. 140 by 90mm. 5.5 by 3.5 inches. Prints""Joh. Elert Bode. Johann Elert Bode Stipple-engraved portrait. Volume 23 of the 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' published in 1807 contained a portrait of German astronomer Johann Elert Bode 1747 - 1826. As director of the Berlin Observatory Bode named Uranus after it was determined to be a planet in 1783. His star atlas of 1801 which he named the 'Uranographia' was the largest to date and contained the positions of more than 17000 stars. In fact it was one of the last scientific astronomic atlases to depict the traditional figures for constellations. His portrait in the """"AGE"""" shows Bode wearing a formal coat and cravat. His profile positioning was probably intended to hide the obvious damage done in his youth to his right eye by a disease. Beneath the portrait set in an oval his name and date of death are given. c1850. Diameter: 51mm 2 inches. Sign on the meridian line Globe hand-coloured engraved gores on two concave brass hemispheres hinged containing internal glass inkwell spring mounted seal gilt finish to interior flattened base. With old paper label to base. One or two inkstains. Prior to the widespread use of fountain pens in the late nineteenth century it was common to carry ink while travelling. Portable inkwells also known as travel wells or travellers were devised for this purpose. It was of the utmost importance for the design to prevent the ink inside the travel wells from leaking and the well itself was usually made from glass and concealed within a case. These cases took on many decorative forms including the present example designed as a globe. Geography The cartography is typical of Victorian maps but simplified with no relief shown on the land. The continents and many of the countries are identified by name along with some major rivers. unknown

Hand-Colored Engravings. The Dame and Her Donkeys Five
<p>London: Field & Tuer 1888. Good plus in publisher's green printed wraps which are darkened some staining spine and corners chipped with loss particularly to back wrapper but not affecting text small prior owner bookplate contents are generally clean and the hand-colored illustrations bright. A delightful facsimile reprint of a book first published in 1823 now featuring "thirty-one hand-coloured engravings."<br /><br />Bright multi-colored illustrations adorn most of the pages telling the tales of adventures in verse of Deborah Dent and her five wonky donkeys each gifted with a sharp sense. The introduction contains an interesting discussion where publisher Tuer gives a history of the Minerva Press and why this book's early attribution to the famous press was a fallacy and why John Ruskin incorrectly attributed a similar title to Minerva.<br /><br />8vo. Frontispiece 2 iv 2 37pp. 9 adverts.</p> Field & Tuer

Hark! Hark! the Dogs do Bark."
London: G.W. Bacon & Co 1914. 530 by 705mm. 20.75 by 27.75 inches. Chromolithographed map laid on wood cut into a jigsaw housed in original box small piece missing upper right. An humorous serio-comic map of Europe in jigsaw form showing a satirical depiction of the beginning of the First World War. The principal combatants are portrayed in canine form: a British bulldog French poodle German dachshund and an Austro-Hungarian mongrel. The Royal Navy is controlled by John Bull in the costume of a Jack Tar. To the left Russia is portrayed as a steamroller driven by the Tsar who has already trapped the tail of the Austrian mongrel and threatens to crush all before him. The mongrel is also being stung by a Serbian hornet and is leashed to the German dachshund who is having his nose bitten by the British bulldog. Below the fighting dogs lies Italy as a soldier with gun in hand deciding which side to join. To the right Greece stares menacingly with dagger drawn at the Ottoman Empire who holds the gateway to the Black Sea in one hand and German ships in the other. A German dachshund puppy sits behind him on a leash sporting a fez a reference to the 1914 Ottoman-German Alliance. There is an extensive note at the bottom outlining the events leading up to the beginning of the war and concluding defiantly "Peace has gone to the Dogs for the present - until a satisfactory muzzle has been found for that Dachshund." The note is by Walter Emanuel 1869-1915 a regular writer for the satirical magazine Punch. The artist responsible for the piece is unknown. Emanuel was known for his anthropomorphic books about dogs produced in collaboration with the artist Cecil Aldin including 'The Dogs of War' 1906. Although the title is similar to the present work this was in fact the biography of a Norfolk spaniel. G.W. Bacon & Co, unknown

Have the Methodists Accepted Communism
Place of Publication Not Identified: Publisher Not Identified 1956. <br /><br />Octavo 8 5/8 x 4 7/8 inches; 213 x 97 mm 14 pages in stapled wrappers. <br /><br />Lurid antisemitic pamphlet that begins "Are the Methodists teaching Judaism instead of Christianity" The pamphlet goes on to give excerpts from Jewish and Methodist publications in an attempt to show the Methodists are teaching from the Talmud which supposedly promotes communism. These excerpts are interspersed with sarcastic commentary such as referring to the Anti-Defamation League as the "secret police" of the American Jewish Committee. <br /><br />The author also attacks the NAACP saying it's not led by a "Negro" but by "a revolutionary New York Jew." Moreover we're told that "documented information" links Zionism with "the World Communist conspiracy." The author also has a thing against universal brotherhood: "The creed of those who sponsor this program is to eliminate all personal freedom and the sovereignty of nations including America in favor of a Jewish world social order." <br /><br />We estimate the publication date of the pamphlet to be 1956 or thereabouts since that's the latest year shown in the various excerpts published here. We have not been able to identify an author or group issuing this pamphlet. Perhaps an interesting research project for scholars of antisemitism or anticommunism. <br /><br />OCLC shows only five institutional holdings of this pamphlet: Michigan State Samford New York Public Library Abilene Christian and the Wisconsin Historical Society. None in commerce November 2021. <b>RARE</b>. <br /><br />CONDITION: Slight edge wear and toning some rusting to staples. About Near Fine. [Publisher Not Identified] paperback

Herbarium A Collection of Flora 1878-1879 spine label title
no place: no publisher 1879. Near Fine. An exquisitely compiled herbarium of over 1000 plants native to Europe collected over the course of one year meticulously chronicling the flora's growth throughout the seasons. Approximately 1051 specimens of all manner of flora mounted on 104 sheets further mounted onto leaves some with exact collection dates almost all specimens have been identified in their Latin name except the last 113. At the head of each leaf are sequential month and year. Bound in modern quarter tan calf over green cloth with five raised bands and green leather spine label lettered in gilt; fern patterned end papers. 11 x 17". Folio. Near Fine with only small ratio of loss to specimens 17 to be precise with some breakage to a few leaves and stems. Offsetting from specimens and some wear to edges. <p>A massive assemblage collected by an unidentified fervent botanist over the course of an entire year. The book begins in December 1878 with seasonally humble speedwells white dead nettles and catkins. Slowly but surely winter melts away in the collector's environment and tender spring ephemerals like snowdrops blood root and hellebore are presented with clear excitement. The specimens truly become vivacious in the warmer seasons between May and June where it seems pages are stacked almost artistically with perfectly preserved flag iris large stalks of horsetail bright examples of thistles and spindly tufts of wheat. It seems that toward the end perhaps exhausted after weeks of collecting in the summer heat specimens assembled in the colder months of October and November are more hastily affixed and without species name below. A particularly attractive herbarium that is well-preserved and lovingly assembled. [no publisher] unknown

Hieroglyphic Amusement on the Following Subjects Education Modesty Reputation Vanity Elegance Religion Knowledge Curiosity Applause Reflection Insinuation Complacency.
London Publish’d Boston Republish’d by W. Norman 1801. . 18 leaves 18mo 5½ x 3½ inches comprising engraved frontispiece engraved title a leaf of letterpress text 12 leaves of engraved hierogylphs on the 12 subjects a leaf of letterpress text and two blank leaves the blank recto of the frontispiece and the final blank leaf pasted to the original embossed colored wrappers as issued some early and neat hand-coloring; a well-used and soiled copy with two clean tears repaired and two hieroglyphic leaves "Modesty" and "Knowledge" with corners torn away but with loss only of the line borders the plates for "Religion" and "Curiosity" less fully inked than the others but all readable. Expertly restored and resewn in the original embossed and colored wrappers. Three early ownership inscriptions: "E. Weston" this lined through on the title-page and replaced with "George Appleton’s 1804" or possibly "1809" and on the blank verso of the title a large and calligraphic signature "Nathaniel Thomas". First and apparently the only American edition. The Boston publisher William Norman also published an edition of the New Hieroglyphic Bible in 1794 which was successful enough for him to reprint or reissue it in 1796. Doubtless that success inspired him to produce the present Hieroglyphic Amusement which had been published in London by John Wallis as a set of twelve engraved cards accompanied by a small printed booklet in 1791. Jill Shefrin mentions the Wallis publication in her Make it a Pleasure and not a Task: Educational Games for Children in Georgian England: Princeton University Library Chronicle 60 1999. Wallis published several sets of rebus cards: in 1791 a set of twelve cards entitled Hieroglyphic Amusements. . . . The passage on Education recalls Locke: "As the young plant groweth as it is bent. . . so is a young child in the hands of the mother. - Trust not a man-servant with the education of thy son nor a maidservant with the education of thy daughter." This American publication is even rarer than sets of the London cards. There are two copies in OCLC AAS and Peabody Essex. The Peabody Essex library catalogue entry gives "4 pages 12 leaves" i.e. 14 leaves: is their copy complete; the American Antiquarian Society copy is backlogged for cataloguing. London Publish’d Boston Republish’d by W. Norman, 1801. unknown
