‎Hopes & Fears When where and what about Cabinet Delegation's work in India. By a noted Journalist Who met and talked to Delegation Members and Indian Party Leaders. Foreword by Dr. B. Pattabhi Sitaramayya.‎

‎1946. Delhi: Printed by Mr. A. C. Jain at the Rajhana Press Delhi and published the Dhara Publications for the Banking Experts. 1946. 8vo. Original printed cloth-backed boards with illustrated dust-wrappers price-clipped; pp. 16 lvi 96 four photographic illustrations on two leaves of plates on green paper tables in the text; wrappers minimally spotted otherwise very good.Very rare first edition of this blow-by-blow account of the diplomatic and political wranglings about India's future and independence documenting in diary form the events from February 19 to June 14 1946. The preface is by Bhogaraju Pattabhi Sitaramayya a leading independence activist and close ally of Nehru. The author was a young journalist observing the British Cabinet Mission to India discussing a plan for Indian independence. Over a period of three months the mission failed to achieve a constitutional agreement between the two main parties and the inevitability of partition became apparent. One of the rarest books on a crucial moment in the history of the Subcontinent.Front fly-leaf cordially inscribed by one G. Jain to Mr and Mrs Paul B. Mason 'by one of whom they consider as their own son' dated 1948; large printed and folded leaf of all the meetings of Pethick-Lawrence Stafford Cripps and V. A. Alexander in spring 1946 pasted onto front fly-leaf. This unrecorded leaf titled Cabinet Delegation's Labours at a Glance proves that the owner of this copy had intimate knowledge of the negotiations. ‎Illuminated liturgical manuscript in Latin‎

‎France first half of the 15th century. Single column 21 lines of text written in black and red in a beautiful gothic book hand. Illuminated initial in gold red blue green and white; ruled in red rubrics in red an numerous initials in red and blue. Contemporary blind-stamped calf over wooden boards raised bands two brass fore-edge clasps missing. A very beautiful manuscript from the library of antiquary William Henry Blacking and of George Dunn of Woolley Hall near Maidenhead with their 2 bookplates with coat of arms on paste down. A very attractive collection of sermons and homilies preserved in its original panel-stamped binding with tools. Presumably the personal pocket manuscript of a preacher presbyter Johannes Venuto. Venuto is an Italian originally Tuscan name. The note on the front flyleaf is an invocation to the Lord for having the sins forgiven and removed. The big initial was clearly drawn later as it covers the original text. Originally it is assumed that a calendar occupied the first 77 pages and that calendar has been removed.

George Dunn 1865-1912 of Woolley Hall near Maidenhead Berkshire was an English bibliophile and keen student of paleography and early printing. Throughout his life he built up an impressive library at Woolley Hall collecting early English law books medieval manuscripts early printed books including volumes from unusual towns and presses. After his death in 1912 his library was broken up and sold off at Sotheby's between 1913 and 1917 realising over £30000. unknown‎

Scarce. Grace Gibbie Wiederseim Drayton 1877-1936 was the artistic creator of the Campbell Soup kids and Dolly Dingle. She was the first woman to be a cartoonist for the publisher Hearst. Dating this work is based on her marriage to Theodore Wiederseim from 1900-1911. After her divorce from Wiederseim and marriage to William Drayton in 1911 she signed her name using Drayton. The paper and printing of this booklet seem to be from the 1930s although the illustrations are signed with the name of her first husband. A book called Kiddie land was published around 1910 with her illustrator sister Margaret G. Hays and Thomas Burke containing verse and rhymes. While this edition lacks verse and rhymes it does contain stories about the activities the children are involved in. Interesting that the colors in the clothing are changed in this edition. Minor spotting at the cover slight wear at corners inside a small square offset about 2"x2" at the front pastedown. A handsome Very Good or better. An epic German folk poem from the mythology of the middle ages written in the 13th century titled alternately Gudrun Lied. The poem is named after the heroine Kudrun or Gudrun not however the same Gudrun of the Icelandic sagas Gudrun in Volsunga Saga and the Eddas. Possibly the second greatest German epic in the Middle Age after the Nibelungenlied. It was written in Middle High German verse probably between 1220 and 1250. Not an element of the Nibelungen cycle Nibelungenlied and Volsunga Saga and not to be confused with the heroes and heroines in the Norse saga and other German epics Kudrun stands apart with regard to theme and plot as well. A scarce and eminently collectible edition. L-B

Hyperion Verlag unknown‎

‎Lambeth Suspension Bridge.‎

‎c.1861. 240 by 600mm 9.5 by 23.5 inches. Watercolour on paper. The first modern bridge at Lambeth was a suspension bridge designed by Peter W. Barlow. Sanctioned by an Act of Parliament in 1860 it opened as a toll bridge in 1862 but doubts about its safety coupled with its awkwardly steep approaches deterring horse-drawn traffic meant it soon became used almost solely as a pedestrian crossing. It ceased to be a toll bridge in 1879 when the Metropolitan Board of Works assumed responsibility for its upkeep – it was by then severely corroded and by 1910 it was closed to vehicular traffic. unknown‎

‎Le Père Avare ou Les Malheurs de L'Education; Contenant une idée de ceux de la Colonie de l'Isle de C‎

‎Paris: Desventes de Ladoué 1770. First edition. xvi 359 iii; 334; 360pp. 3 vols. 12mo. Bound in full contemporary mottled calf. With the bookplate of the Vicomte de Noailles engraved by Agry in each volume. Upper joint of vol. III with short start at foot otherwise a fine and fresh copy. First edition. xvi 359 iii; 334; 360pp. 3 vols. 12mo. A satirical response to Rousseau's Emile ou l'Education 1762. Where Émile is guided by a wise tutor the author of Le Père avare mocks from the outset Rousseau's dictum "le véritable précepteur est le père" for the narrator's father M. d'Erigny grew up poor and gained wealth through his friendship with a government minister; his child has been spoiled from infancy.
While M. d'Erigny is drunk his mistress gets him to sign an order from her jeweler for 20000 francs of precious stones and skips out. The extravagance is discovered and the father becomes miserly in the extreme. The son now 15 years old is entrusted to a unscrupulous précepteur or tutor who involves the youth in a swindle and vanishes with the money.
This is a confessional so we learn it all: the narrator soon discovers love and devotes himself to pleasure using the family name to run up accounts everywhere before being deceived and fleeced. M. d'Erigny is furious; Madame intercedes: his debts are paid and he is sent off to exile in a provincial town. He is befriended by a well-connected gentleman but repays this trust with deceit. Besotted with an actress he forges a criminal denunciation of a rival but his scheme is discovered and his in consigned to "une de ces maisons de force" a private prison for the reform of licentious youth.
To escape this close confinement the narrator embarks with a flotilla of colonists bound for the island of C in the new world. His mother's continued good influence follows him across the ocean cushioning him from the worst excesses of a brutal colonial regime amply detailed. Florainville a mistress who has managed her money well comes to the colony to rescue him but falls afoul of the corrupt Intendant and her health fails her. She dies but not before she has made him her legatee. The narrator assists the colonial governor in prosecuting the Intendant and returns to France. He retires to a rural abbey and contemplates his experiences. Before long he becomes the benefactor of a village community and sees it thrive.
Only edition of this little-known work of fiction set partly in the Americas. OCLC records two copies in N. America Princeton UCLA two in France and one at Trinity College Dublin Desventes de Ladoué unknown‎

The pages are numbered except the first and last and there is no title page. In the catalogue of the Nederlandse Entomologische Vereniging NEV the following is present: Oudemans JTh ca. 1898 "Lijst van Nederlandsche Lepidoptera benevens de als vermoedelijk Nederlandsch aan te merken soorten gerangschikt volgens Snellen's Vlinders van Nederland en genummerd volgens Staudinger en Wocke's Catalog Dresden 1871. These copies are very similar however the list ends with "Genummerd volgens Staudinger en Rebel 1901 met de bladzijden van Snellen Microlepidoptera". These copies also as described above in Dutch for the work attributed to Oudemans with pencilled dots in front of the species numbers and with some random marginalia. One copy interleaved with many additional annotations neatly written in ink on the blank leaves and on the printed pages mostly taxonomical or nomenclatural corrections. ‎LITTLE HELEN; OR A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A NAUGHTY GIRL‎

‎New Haven: S. Babcock n.d. circa 1825. First edition. RARE. 7 engravings “for the mind and the eye†and decorative borders on each page 12mo in original paper with blue wrappers very nicely designed border on upper and lower covers illustrations on upper cover and inside lower cover; advertisement on lower cover. 16 pp. A very good copy with attractive designs on covers and pages. This children’s book is called a chapbook a more modern term that derives from the chapmen. Chapmen were pedlars who hawked their goods in towns and villages and at country fairs. In 1553 Edward VI proclaimed that champmen must be licensed and Chettle in Kind Hart’s Dreame 1592 wrote that “‘Chapmen are able to spred more pamphlets.then all the booksellers in town.’†Although they sold other wares too they always had cheap booklets sometimes ballad sheets which eventually assumed the familiar form af a miniature booklet with a paper cover that usually had a picture. Even Shakespeare in Henry IV mentioned the chapmen as did Urquhart’s Rabelais in 1653. With the growth of small printers miniature editions of old favourites could be printed. While chapbooks were ostensibly designed to help children learn how to read they often broached adult subjects and were the source of entertainment in families and villages.
This book is one of the series of “moral instructive and entertaining toy books†put out by Babcock’s. ‎[Anonymous British Soldier]‎

‎MANUSCRIPT. FIRST WORLD WAR TRENCHES DIARY. Diary of a British soldier of the 49th Infantry Division ending abruptly on December 19 1915 the first day Phosgene gas was used against the British‎

‎France Belgium England 1915. Good. Oblong 8vo. Small "Walker's Service Notebook" 154 x 94 mm lined 26 pages filled with neat entries in pencil and pen final page of diary loose the remaining portion of the notebook i.e. about 2/3 blank. Original limp cloth covers worn. § Extraordinary manuscript diary of an anonymous British soldier beginning April 12th 1915 and ENDING ABRUPTLY IN THE TRENCHES AFTER A GAS ATTACK. The final entry was dated December 19th 1915 which was THE FIRST DAY PHOSGENE GAS WAS USED AGAINST BRITISH SOLDIERS. The short diary is rich in detail of life at the front. The anonymous soldier belonged to the 49th West Riding Division which had a large number of gas casualties when soldiers in reserve lines did not receive a warning in time to put on their helmets. A study by British medical authorities arrived at a figure of 1069 gas casualties 120 of which were fatal. It is very possible that the present manuscript was written by one of those men. It seems probable that with access to the right regimental records the identity and fate of the soldier could be learned and his story told in full; however even as an anonymous diary the interest and poignancy of this personal record is clear.

The events recorded span just nine months. On April 12th the soldier leaves Edenthorpe near Doncaster and crosses the channel to Le Havre that evening "packed like herrings" and accompanying horses and wagons. Over the next few months he records laying lines opening signal offices handling horses towns and villages visited billets and meals injuries regiments encountered names of comrades and O.C.s shelling rain and mud. He sees the Northumberland Hussars the Indian Corps and Royal Horse Artillery. On May 9th he records the Battle of Aubers Ridge: "Off duty at 7am. Attack began at 5am by Artillery. Signal thro' during day showed heavy losses in E. Lancs Lincolns. 13th London and other Batts. Had coffee in Fleurbaix and then to bed in barn. Off duty 3pm. Attack still proceeding without much impression on our line. French said to be doing well. At night we have the two windows in our Signal Office made up with corrugated iron & sandbags."

For the entry dated May 12th our author notes that the name of the Division has been "altered to the 49th" thereby confirming the identity of his Division. On May 24th: "The Allamands dropped about 6 shrapnel in our vicinity."

From a period of steady work and periodic pleasures "had tea & cakes at a patisserie & and then back after buying some books" "glorious day" the situation deteriorates with the weather "torrential rain dugouts leaking & 18" water on my floor".

They move to Chateau de Trois Tours and on July 13th there is "rather an exciting night" with a bombardment from 7.30 to 10.30. On the 14th "The whole place is being encircled by barbed wire & trenches & the furniture is being moved out of the chateau." On the 15th "At 12.45pm about 12 shells fell round the chateau made a dive for the Signal Office Billy Edwards & Gus Harris wounded in thigh and ankle." They were shelled again on the 16th.

On December 1st he travels back to Sheffield on leave returning on December 8th. The company are now holed up near Ypres at Hospital Farm the name given to a farm building used as a dressing station. The final entry reads "Dec 19th 'S.O.S.' Gas attack 5.30 am things lively until 8.30am. 146 & 148 des. 148 soon repaired from chateau". The cemetery at Hospital Farm contains 115 Commonwealth burials of the First World War.

On the significance of the 19 Dec. 1915 battle at Wieltje Belgium northeast of Ypres see the long Wikipedia entry "German Phosgene Attack of 19 December 1915."

The diary contains many clues that could help identify our writer in military records. It is not certain that he was one of the first British casualties to Phosgene gas but it seems tragically likely. As it stands the final entry in the diary marks an important milestone in the war: phosgene gas would eventually be responsible for about 85% of the 90000 deaths caused by chemical weapons during World War I. unknown‎

"Valdez represents the tragedy of mining towns. It is really a dead mining town & it is a real tragedy to walk through and see the great number of vacant houses. Really it is hard to understand the lure of such a place." "Anchorage was created as an operating base for the construction of the railroad and has large permanent railroad yards & shops. It is the youngest and most up to date town in Alaska. For the tourist however it has little of interest." "Fairbanks a town almost exclusively of log cabins. the city is isolated because of its great distance from anywhere and people of the States do not care to spend so much time in traveling to reach the place."
‎

‎Manuscript map of Etchu Province Honshu Island Japan probably mid nineteenth-century.‎

‎The focus of the map is Toyama a significant sea-port in what was once Etchu province on Honshu. The medium is ink on laid paper. A mid nineteenth century date has been suggested on stylistic grounds and the script is pre-Meji era. Toyama and the surrounding towns are shown in the yellow circles linked by red roads and regions are also named. It is unsigned on the back of the map is written 'Etchu Map'. Most of the text concerns distances a form of mileage table. There is a note top right which appears to indicate that the information in red is less certain than the information in black. Various other things are shown on the map: shrines and temples hot springs and a gate where travellers would have to show passports. Map unknown‎
