(Anonymous German Air Force Colonel, attributed to). Issued by the Military Intelligence Division, US. War Department U. S.
Cover Title: Decline of the G.A.F.
no place: no publisher 1945. Hardcover. Near Fine. First edition. Quarto. 13 1 ff. typescript or carbon copy on onion skin printed rectos only. Bound into clothbacked card covers by threaded plastic lugs lacking one possibly two with a photographic frontispiece laid down on cover. A bit of wear on the spine and the upper holes of the first couple of leaves else just about fine. The photographic frontispiece shows a graph the German Air Force's operational strength beginning at Stalingrad in the form of an airplane's trajectory which plummets in 1945.

According to the first page this document contains information on reasons for the decline of the German Air Force "obtained from a German Air Force Colonel captured 1 January 1945. Received in Britain 15 March 1945. Note: At the time of his capture this prisoner was in command of a Fighter Wing. He has written what follows below in the hope that it may ultimately help to assure that responsibility for disasters which have overtaken the G.A.F. and for the catastrophe thus brought on Germany herself may rest where it properly belongs."

A purported history of German WWII air combat and an analysis of the German Air Force's failings by a captured Colonel who claims to have been both a Gruppenkommandeur and Geschwaderkommodor. He seems to believe that as the enemy's tactics and technology changed a lack of far-sighted planning changes sometimes taking six months to be implemented did the G.A.F. in.

The plot thickens. According to a penciled note on the final leaf signed "FJUA" "The above is actually a recorded 'cut-in' taken at CSDIC UK early 1945 from 'M' room." "M" for "miked" room was the location of an intelligence operation that secretly recorded the conversations of over 10000 German PoWs. CSDIC stands for "Combined Services Detailed Interrogation Centre." The U.K. CSDIC CSDICI-Z Section was located at 49 St. George's Drive Pimlico London. While we can't validate FJU's claim this doesn't seem to be a publication made as propaganda for a wide audience.

The account closes thusly: "For A. C. of S. G-2" which we understand to mean "the head of intelligence for the Army Chief of Staff." And below: "/s/P.E. Peabody" Paul E. Peabody who is identified as a Brigadier General and Chief of the Military Intelligence Service. We surmise it was published for internal use.

A purported first-hand account of the failings of the German Air Force by a captured Nazi Colonel apparently recorded in one of the major Allied intelligence operations of World War II. Rare. OCLC locates two copies both in U.S. military libraries. no publisher] hardcover

EGYPTIAN IRRIGATION - OLD METHODS & RECENT IMPROVEMENTS: A unique original 24 PAGE TYPED MANUSCRIPT on Egyptian Irrigation with PROFUSE CORRECTIONS & ADDITIONS in INK.

Good. - An original 24 page manuscript typed on twenty-three 10-7/8 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide and one 9-5/8 inch high by 8 inch wide sheets of off-white paper. Titled in ink at the top of the first page: "Egyptian Irrigation - Old Methods & Recent Improvements" the author first acknowledges Sir William Willcocks who "dedicated his book on Egyptian Irrigation to the memory of Nubar Pasha." He goes on to remark that "Sir William modestly gives the whole credit to Nubar Pasha of these great industrial and social reforms and ignores the part he himself played in the good work." "But the name which should stand out first on the list is that of the French engineer Mougel Bey. It was he who planned and commenced the construction of the famous Barrages at the bifurcation of the river into the Dametta and Rosetta branches." He goes on to detail the state of irrigation and current improvements "The task which the Irrigations Department since the English occupation has set itself is to provide against Egypt ever suffering from scarcity of water by impounding a sufficiency of the surplus that runs to waste during floods even in poor years for use during the dry winter and spring months. This it has succeeded in doing by building the great dam above Assouan across the river at the First Cataract." "Even the plan proposed by Mr. Whitehouse an American to form a great reservoir at Wady Rayan like the ancient Lake Moeris after mature deliberation was considered insufficient. What brilliant enthusiasts and great engineers like Willcocks and Grastin are dreaming of as possibilities is the control of the waters as they flow from the great Equitorial Lakes." Obviously there is much on the effects of irrigation on Egyptian agriculture including ancient historical efforts. He concludes over the last two pages by suggesting how the efforts in Egypt may be applied to the U.S. "When we read of the immense advantages of the reclamation of 500000 acres to Egypt we begin to appreciate what irrigation may do in our own West where millions of acres lie waste for want of water. But only such sluggish rivers as the Missouri and the Mississippi approach the Nile in character or periodicity of rise and fall and of the larger rivers of the Rocky Mountain region only the Rio Grande and the Colorado carry during floods such fertilizing mud as has given the Nile the double property of irrigating and enriching the soil." He goes on to detail the disadvantages if applied to some of the other rivers and streams "The experience of India Spain Lombardy as well as of Egypt and of every old land whose existence depends on irrigation confirm the need of painstaking observation and the danger of hasty and ill-considered action."

There are profuse corrections penned in ink throughout with paragraphs and sentences crossed out and new sentences penned in as well as new text typed on a slip of paper mounted with glue to cover several lines which the author chose to rewrite. Folded horizontally the manuscript is slightly soiled with minor corner creases. There is a very short tear to the edge of the fold of the last page.

Although the author is not identified this constitutes unique source material.

Grey Towers: A Campus Novel
Chicago: Covici-McGee Co. Very Good in Very Good dj. 1923. 2nd printing. Hardcover. NOISBN . spine slightly turned a bit of dust-soiling to top edge a couple of lightly bumped corners one-time owner's address label on front pastedown; jacket moderately edgeworn spine browned small chip at top of rear panel; jacket a teensy bit shorter than the book apparently made that way. "A novel of protest written by a young apostle of revolt against the present system of education in the colleges." Although the author is not identified by gender the book seems to have a definite feminist slant telling of the travails of a young graduate student teaching Freshman English while dealing with "the undercurrent of malice and politics" at the university. She finds that "the departments are run by old men who have lost touch with the students" and feels herself "powerless to defeat the red-tape and apathetic disregard of the older men." Neither the city nor the specific university in the book are identified but add the Chicago imprint to the description of the school "on the shore of the great lake in the broad Middle-West" do the math and get back to me about where YOU think it is. The author of the 1962 study "The College Novel in America" speculated that the book was "possibly by Zoë Flannagan" but gives no indication who the hell "Zoë Flannagan" might have been. Thanks for nothing. . Covici-McGee Co. hardcover
