‎BINDING - PHILADELPHIA CA. 1865. The Photograph Album‎

‎Philadelphia: W.W. Harding 1865. Album 5 x 6 x 2.5 in. Title-page a little foxed verso blank Index to portraits 2 pp. followed by 25 thick cards creating 50 slots; all are filled with 47 cartes-de-visite 2 views and one chromolithograph a little foxed. Bound in original blue-green roan over deeply embossed carved boards covers and spine gilt edges dazzlingly gilt and gauffered each board with four porcelain beads two working catches and clasps with luxuriously wrought mounts and two porcelain beads moire pastedowns and endpapers. Minor scuffing to binding extremities. SUPERB CIVIL WAR ERA PHILADELPHIA BINDING THE GILT AND GAUFFERED EDGES GLEAM AMAZINGLY. <br /> <br /> The assemblage of the present album may be localized to Minnesota or neighboring Wisconsin owing to the surprising inclusion of two small views by Benjamin Franklin Upton 1818-1910 of the St. Croix River which demarks the two states. One of the images is entitled "Views of the Dells on the St. Croix River" a stereoscopic copy dated 1865 is at the Getty; the other is a log jam downriver from the bridge with a group of loggers posed in the foreground two stereoscopic copies of this scene are view held by NYPL Photography Collection. <br /> <br /> While it is not certain that the family who assembled the album are from either Minnesota or Wisconsin it seems self-evident that the St. Croix River was of considerable significance. Was the last name of this family "Quincy" We are perplexed by a third surprising inclusion namely a chromolithograph of a "Quince Blossom" probably not at random. The present album is far more luxurious than Harding's more common and much more inferior "Universal Photograph Album" 1861 and ours is distinguished by its exceptional condition. W.W. Harding unknown‎

‎British Legation Peking.‎

‎Peking c1900. map 340 by 261mm. 13.5 by 10.25 inches. Manuscript map 227 by 175mm in pencil and coloured pencil with ink annotations minor foxing pasted on paper. Contemporary newspaper clipping affixed to upper left corner with pin. Two photographs 86 by 295mm pasted to verso sun-spotted bleached and toned. Separate sheet with two photographs pasted to front one to verso in same condition. This unique manuscript plan of the Peking Legation Quarter records the positions of the two opposing sides during the most tense conflict of the Boxer Rebellion. <br/><br/>The Yihetaun Movement was a violent uprising in China at the turn of the twentieth century inspired by the proto-nationalist sentiments of United in Righteousness a militant group commonly referred to as 'Boxers'. They condemned the presence of colonial and Christian influences in the country and were incensed by the disruption that had resulted from the growth of foreign powers. Their activities grew increasingly violent throughout the late1890s until against a background of severe drought Boxer rebels converged on Beijing then known as Peking. They marched on the city with the aim of "supporting the Qing government and exterminating the foreigners". In fear of extermination foreigners and Chinese Christians fled to the Legation Quarter the foreign diplomatic centre in the city. Their panic was justified as Empress Cixi sided with the Boxers and issued an imperial decree declaring war on foreign powers. <br/><br/>Combined forces from Japan the United Kingdom America France Russia Germany Italy and Austria-Hungary formed the 'Eight-Nation Alliance' to combat the Chinese attacks. The Boxers responded by besieging the Legation Quarter in the summer of 1900 during which the head of the British diplomatic embassy Claude MacDonald later stated that the 13th July was "the most harassing day". The present plan maps the movements of both sides during this engagement with an annotation explaining that "all north of blue line taken by enemy between 20th June - 10th July". A newspaper clipping attached to the map recounts how the allied forces led by British Lietenant-General Gaselee liberated the Legation Quarter the following month with the British the first to breach the Boxers' siege lines. The rebellion was formally ended in 1901 with the Boxer Protocol a settlement under which China was forced to pay a large indemnity to the foreign powers and accept that "the quarter occupied by the legations shall be considered as one specially reserved for their use and placed under their exclusive control in which Chinese shall not have the right to reside and which may be made defensible". <br/><br/>Included alongside the map are five photographs taken inside the Legation Quarter helping to illustrate what life was like for the British troops stationed in Beijing during the conflict. One shows a tennis court set on the mountainside which is referenced in the account of Wilkinson a student interpreter at the British Legation. He records that "in summer there was tennis on the Legation lawn and in the grounds of the residence of the young European employees of the China Maritime Customs as well as garden parties at the American Legation". Two other photographs capture the Quarter's extensive gardens filled with trees bridges and pavilions. Wilkinson concedes that "it was an attractive place in which to stay. Only the water-tower and the dingy brick power-plant spoilt the pleasant effect of trees and lawns and flowering shrubs. The large extent of the grounds deadened the noise of the city outside as well as attracting various wild birds - crows cuckoos magpies hoopoes woodpeckers and orioles." A further photograph shows a line of Indian soldiers standing to attention in front of their barracks; as part of the British Empire Indian forces played a key role in its military engagements. The final photograph appears to have been taken from a boat leaving or arriving at the U.S. Quarantine Wharf in the port of Tianjin which was the main maritime gateway to Beijing. Tianjin was central in the conflict since the Boxers cut the railway line between the port-city and Beijing in order to completely isolate the latter making it difficult for the Eight-Nation Alliance to coordinate an organised attack. <br/><br/>The picturesque scenes shown in the photographs seem far removed from the very real dangers posed by the rebellion a contrast acutely captured by this intimate and unique collection of contemporary documents. <br/><br/> Conger 'Letters from China with Particular Reference to the Empress Dowager and the Women of China' Chicago 1909; Cranmer-Byng 'The old British Legation at Peking 1860-1959: Based on a Lecture Delivered on 20 August 1962' Journal of the Hong Kong Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society 1963; Preston 'The Boxer Rebellion' New York: Berkley Books 2000; Thompson 'William Scott Ament and the Boxer Rebellion' Jefferson NC 2009; Wilkinson '"Where Chineses Drive" English Student-Life at Peking. By a student interpreter' London 1885. unknown‎

‎Catholique et de Monseigneur le Dauphin.‎

‎Paris: I.F. Benard 1743. 252 by 184mm. 10 by 7.25 inches. Prints""Nicolas de Fer Geographie de sa Majeste Nicolas de Fer Engraved portrait. Portrait of Nicolas de Fer 1646–1720 who was apprenticed to Parisian engraver Louis Spirinx and made his first map at 23. In 1687 his father's printing firm was passed on to Nicolas who rapidly expanded the cartographical side of the business. Perhaps de Fer's greatest work 'L'Atlas curieux' was published from 1700 until 1705 at which point it spanned four volumes and contained 113 maps and views many of which focused on the regions and monuments of France. The entire work can be considered a celebration of the French empire under the reign of King Louis XIV from whom de Fer received a royal privilege in 1703. During de Fer's period as official geographer to the King de Fer continued to produce a great number of impressive maps which eventually won him the even more prestigious post of official geographer to the Pope to which he was appointed in 1720. The portrait served as the frontispiece of 'Les frontieres de France et des Pais Bas' at atlas by de Fer published by I.F. Benard in 1743. It shows de Fer in a high powdered peruke and elaborately flowing robes holding a pen in his left hand. In the oval frame around him his name and official roles are identified while the plinth below reads: """"A server le Public j'ay employé mes jours En habile Geographe j'ay parcouru la terre. Et si par mes travaux j'ay pu le satisfaire Qu'il demande poour moy le Celeste sejour"""". Flanking the plinth are all manner of geographical and astronomical equipment. I.F. Benard, unknown‎

‎CHILDREN'S BOOK. A manuscript album of colored drawings and b/w sketches of Africans Native Americans and Aboriginal Australians‎

‎s.l. Germany or Austria s.d. late 19th or early 20th century. Poor. 64mo 70 x 55 mm. Homemade binding cloth spine loosening front cover perished; back cover: board covered with glazed paper present on the pastedown inside detaching but the glazed paper on the outside is torn away. VERY WORN see the 44 IMAGES on our website the back cover becoming unstable but all the leaves are attached. Preserved in a fine cloth case which is perfectly fitted to allow the manuscript to be correctly removed and completely protected. HIGHLY CURIOUS LILLIPUTIAN ALBUM CONTAINING JUVENILE DRAWINGS OF THE MOST UNLIKELY ASSEMBLAGE OF UNDER-REPRESENTED PEOPLES NAMELY AFRICANS NATIVE AMERICANS AND ABORIGINAL AUSTRALIANS ALL DEPICTED IN THEIR NATIVE HABITATS AND INDIGENOUS ATTIRE. <br /> <br /> We have never encountered a manuscript such as this one either in permanent collections on in the trade. Our album contains 41 colored drawings and b/w sketches on 35 leaves with a number of blanks bound in. They include:<br /> <br /> AFRICANS: 28 drawings and b/w sketches including hunting scenes some on horseback; nude and partially clothed Africans; African landscapes with lions tigers and great birds some devouring each other; an African child being saved from a tiger by an angel; and a man and woman dancing in a garden; three Africans cultivating grapes; several Africans fighting and much more. Some of the drawings feature palm trees and rounded huts. The caption on one of the drawings reads "In die Jagt" sic.<br /> <br /> NATIVE AMERICANS: 9 drawings and b/w sketches including hunting scenes with the hunters in full headdress with feathers; in one of the drawings a group of three men are in combat with a tiger who leaps from a large tree. Interestingly some of the drawings likewise feature palm trees. The caption on one of the drawings reads "Zweiter Theil vom dem Ameriganer oder Idianer."<br /> <br /> ABORIGINAL AUSTRALIANS: 4 drawings and b/w sketches the most remarkable being a scene of two men seated beneath a tree a large dinosaur bird flies immediately above and in the sky a peaceful sun sees all. The caption on one of the drawings reads "Dritter Theil von dem Australiener." <br /> <br /> GNOME: 1 b/w sketch. The gnome wears a backpack and carries a gnarled walking stick his conical hat bearing a heart-shaped ornament in the background a laughing sun peers over the horizon.<br /> <br /> That Parts II and III have a divisional title suggests that there were one or more leaves at the beginning of Part I as well now no longer extant. Nonetheless this is a fascinating little children's manuscript and remains A REMARKABLE SURVIVAL. <br /> <br /> CATALOGUER'S NOTE: We are grateful to Dr. Claudia Bubenik for helping us transcribe the juvenile German inscriptions. unknown‎

Third Edition with price 2s. 6d below imprint in square brackets. Full of fascinating information relating to the etiquette and procedure of royal ceremonies. Small 4to 210 x 155mm: 80pp with large folding copper-engraved frontispiece "Procession of Kings and Queens with over 150 robed figures" measuring a full 440 mm x 350 mm a second folding engraving "The Manner of the Champions performing the Ceremony of ye Challenge" and 12 woodcuts in the text depicting various ceremonial objects including crowns maces scepters and coronation rings. Bound in early possibly contemporary quarter sheep with marbled boards red morocco lettering piece gilt all edges marbled. Bookplate of Buddle Atkinson to front paste-down. A sturdy unsophisticated copy frontispiece slightly spotted along folds sporadic light soiling and browning binding rubbed along spine and corners but an excellent example of a scarce book. ESTC Citation No. T113877. Lowndes 526. Bindley pt. vi 1039. Not in Halkett & Laing. Buddle Atkinson's bookplate appears in Hugo's Catalogue of Thomas Bewick's works but it is in fact engraved on steel not wood and came from the workshop of Mark Lambert one of Bewick's pupils. The plate was designed and engraved by George F. Robinson who joined Lambert's workshop in 1841 and who in the course of 50 years became chief engraver and director of all art works carried out by the firm. The plate was produced when Atkinson b.1841 was a young child perhaps for putting in books that had been owned by his father John Buddle so it likely dates from 1845-1850. N. B. ‎cujus ope Locus medius Solis Lunae ejusdemque Nodorum Solis Declinatio Lunaeque Latitudo Simplex atque ejus Argumentum necnon Novitunia et Plenitania Ecliptica simul inveniuntun.‎

‎c1800. 470mm in diameter. Instruments""Planispherum Lunare A unique manuscript lunar astrolabe Ink and polychromy on paper over pine. The instrument comprises a circular base plate and three rotatable cardboard volvelles and a brass radius pointer attached to each other in the centre. A brass ring is attached to the base plate for suspending. All four paper covered discs are finely inscribed in manuscript with various scales and symbols. Content 1. The smallest volvelle bears a scale covering 12 hours on its outer ring. It also shows the ecliptical motion of the Sun the Moon's orbit the line of nodes and the arguments of latitude in other words the distances from the nodes. 2. On the second volvelle a scale covers the years from 1801 to 1825. each year is subdivided in twelve months with the abbreviated name written for each month. 3. The following volvelle carries a series of scales showing a monthly calendar a zodiac calendar with skilfully drawn pictures and the symbols of the signs. Below the zodiac is a scale for the declination of the sun throughout the year set in four sequences of three. 4. On the outside rim of the volvelle is another calendar scale in which the months are unevenly distributed. This scale presumably was to be used in conjunction with the outer scale on the circular base plate. In addition the volvelle holds two brass studs that most probably helped the user turn the disc to the desired position. This latter scale gives the days subdivided in hours. The days are numbered I to XXXI with the number I coinciding with XXVII and 8 hours the sidereal period of the Moon which results in a double numbering from XXVIII to XXXI. Below this scale for days there is a series of dates all confined to the period 1801 to 1825 presumably for solar eclipses. The brass rule or pointer holds a horizontal scale from 5 to 0 LA-southern declination and from 0 to 5 LB-northern declination indicating the latitude of the moon with respect to the ecliptic. The closer to 0 at new moon or full moon the likelier an eclipse is to occur. The rule is engraved with """"Locus Lunae"""". The circular scales serve to set the moon's position and node relative to the sun from which the user can then infer the lunar phase and whether an eclipse will occur at new moon or full moon. Manuscript instruments of this type are rare especially in such good condition as no other exact copy is recorded to date. Similar instruments were produced at the end of the sixteenth century mostly in brass. Sir Robert Dudley 1573-1649 see item 17 had a lunar calculator made by Charles Whitwell c. 1568-1611 a brass disc of 72 cm diameter overall which was the most complex instrument made during the sixteenth century. Inscribed 'Sir Robert Dudley was the inventor of this instrument' its purpose was to calculate the place of the moon over a period of thirty years. It is now in the Museo di Storia della Scienza in Florence Italy. Another similar paper device was printed with detailed instructions in 1786 in Vlissingen Flushing in the Netherlands advertised as a """"Starkundige Maan-Wyzer en Almanach"""" Astronomical Moon Pointer and Almanac by Henricus Schortinghuis. Oxford Dictionary of National Biography; Webster Roderick and Marjorie 'Western Astrolabes' Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum 1998; Museo di Storia della Scienza Florence Italy unknown‎

‎CURIOSA. A matching pair of strange Indian erotic paintings of exceptionally high quality‎

‎n.d. 19th or 20th century. Two illuminations on thin India paper some vertical creasing professionally matted and framed. Ad 1 priapus: 300 x 250 mm frame size 198 x 140 mm visible 147 x 93 mm size of illumination. Ad 2 she-devil: 306 x 231 mm frame size 205 x 140 mm visible 150 x 83 mm size of illumination. Sold as a pair. TWO WEIRD EROTIC INDIAN ILLUMINATIONS THE LIKES OF WHICH WE HAVE NEVER BEFORE ENCOUNTERED AND ARE UNLIKELY TO ENCOUNTER AGAIN. <br /> <br /> Popular in Roman decorative art the winged priapus is uncommon in Indian iconography. Our illumination is of particularly high quality and depicts a beautiful Indian woman riding a reined priapus perhas twice her size. The priapus is depicted with avain feet and giant wings. The environment is like a strange dream: in the foreground a grey pool with pink flowers; behind are dark green hills with eerie trees and vegetation. In the sky at sunset are what appear to be rain clouds touched in white. We have been unable to transcribe the text but there is writing on the verso. <br /> <br /> The second illumination depicts a grotesque she-devil with fangs horns and a long tongue naked save for pearls around her wrists ankles and biceps. Above her waist her speckled skin is light purple and below dark green. The monster clutches to a strange tree on which four priapus grow and with it engages in sexual relations. She reaches toward a basket of several other priapus which are positioned on an upper branch. As with the accompanying illumination in the foreground we find a watery pool and pink flowers and dark green hills studded by surreal trees. The setting is at twilight. <br /> <br /> HIGHLY CURIOUS AND MUST BE SEEN TO BE FULLY APPRECIATED. unknown‎

Blue wraps with illustration pastedown on front cover. Unpaginated. Minute edgewear else fine. A collection of full color erotica taken from 19th century French miniature lithographs showing "libertines" of that era engaged in all sorts of.sports. Though vintage in nature these are all a little too HC for presenting scans here the cover image which see being pretty much the only one suitable for that. Although the book was produced in Germany being installment #149 in Die Bibliophilen Taschenbucher's aggregation of similar offerings and has a bit of text in German the lithographs reproduced all have short French captions - my personal favorite being "L'asperge a la sauce blanche" "Asparagus with white sauce". In fact quite collectible both because it is an assortment of the miniature erotica that Parisian street artists and lithographers produced for extra income - selling these to the leisure-elite gentlemen of Paris around 1840 - and because it is a fine example of one of a prodigious array of such titles produced by DBT several pages at the end are devoted to the cataloging these.
