‎Black Hugo‎

‎Photograph signed To Beryl H. Levy‎

‎1941. 1 vols. 10 x 10 inches Image. Fine. Framed. 1 vols. 10 x 10 inches Image. Inscribed below on mount:
"To Beryl H. Levy with admiration and good wishes - Hugo L Black April 11 1941."
With a TLS from Black tipped to the back of the frame dated January 22 1941 concerning Levy's book Our Constitution and inviting him to visit
A very interesting legal association. Levy 1929-1995 was a legal scholar and teacher whose speciality was constitutional law and the U.S. Supreme Court. He was also great admirer of and expert on the decisions of Justice Benjamin Cardozo who served from 1932-1938. Black nominated to the Supreme Court by President Franklin D. Roosevelt served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1937 to 1971. Cardozo and Black differed famously over the issue of whether the 14th Amendment "incorporated" the Bill of Rights and made it binding upon the states. unknown books‎

‎Hugo Victor; Haynes Jessie Translator; Lang Andrew Introduction; Masereel Frans Artist‎

‎Notre-Dame de Paris The Hunchback of Notre Dame‎

‎Paris: The Limited Editions Club Printed by R. Coulouma 1930. Limited Edition. Wraps. Near fine. Masereel Frans. No. 714 of 1500 copies quarto size 724 pp. signed by Franz Masereel two volumes complete with original chemise and slipcase. Victor Marie Hugo 1802-1885 remains a household name today; he was a prolific author who published many popular works including this one also known as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "Les Miserables". "Notre-Dame de Paris" was "the first work of fiction to encompass the whole of life from the King of France to Paris sewer rats" n.b. quote from Wiki and was translated into English two years after publication; both the story and the characters have stamped themselves upon our cultural consciousness and have often been turned into films plays and even the opera and ballet.

Frans Masereel 1889-1972 is considered one of the most famous Flemish woodcut artists of his time and can be counted as one of the fathers of the modern graphic novel. The 1920s saw a revival of the medieval woodcut tradition with Masereel cited as "the undisputed king" of this revival. He is perhaps best remembered today for his "wordless novels" particularly Mon Livre d'Heures Passionate Journey.

With an introduction by Andrew Lang 1844-1912 a prodigious author in his own right and literary critic; his "fairy tale" series remains highly sought after today.

This set with the attractive Ex-Libris plates on the front free endpaper of both volumes of Charles Vetter the plate designed by M.D. Carr and dated 1945. Mr. Vetter was apparently a pilot for American Airlines with a stylized version of their early logo placed upon a stack of books on the lower right; he apparently also loved sports with a set of ski poles and a tennis racquet with balls also incorporated into the design.

___DESCRIPTION: Bound in pink Ingres paper wrappers small illustration on the front wraps of the Cathedral of Notre Dame prior owner bookplates in both volumes as set forth above frontispiece in Volume One a Masereel woodcut of Quasimodo additional illustrations both full-page and in-text throughout the text; set in monotype Bodoni Arches paper quarto size 10.25" by 7.75" pagination: Volume One i-iv being the preliminary leaves i-xxx 1-309; Volume Two i-iv 1-376 377 colophon; limited edition of 1500 copies this no. 714 signed by Frans Masereel. The paper wraps still in their original glassine wrappers housed in a chemise and slipcase both of grey and tan mottled paper the chemise with the original cream laid paper spine label with black lettering.

___CONDITION: The volumes could almost be deemed fine; if read it was gently as the corners are straight the text blocks strong the hinges solid the wraps and interiors both clean and bright and other than the Ex-Libris plate of Charles Vetter free of prior owner markings; both text blocks slightly cocked and a hint of rubbing to the head and tails of the spines else fine. The glassine wraps also near fine with only the same hint of rubbing to the head and tails of the spine. The chemise strong and clean with sunning to the spine and the original paper spine label the paper covering the joints beginning to crack; the slipcase very good plus strong and sturdy some of the paper covering has flaked off revealing the cloth lining beneath the seams at the openings just beginning to separate one seam to about two inches the other three only about a quarter-inch. Overall a near fine set with all of the original pieces with powerful images by one of the greatest 20th-century illustrators by one of the 19th-century's great authors.

___CITATION: LEC Bibliography no. 13.

___POSTAGE: Please note that the set is unusally heavy and additional postage may apply please inquire for details.

___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. ‎Westport Connecticut: The Limited Editions Club printed at the Harbor Press 1977. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. Detaille Edouard. No. 351 of 1600 copies quarto size 110 pp. with LEC Monthly Letter signed by Drew Middleton. Victor Hugo's 1802-1885 rendition of the Battle of Waterloo taken straight from the pages of his novel "Les Misérables" first published in 1862. Hugo was a passionate patriot so impassioned of France's glory that at times he set aside facts for feeling: his "Battle of Waterloo" sways the reader to believe it was Napoleon rather than Wellington that came out ahead. To round out Hugo's text the Limited Editions Club invited "New York Times" Military Correspondent Drew Middleton to write a historically authoritative introduction a balance the Club claimed "absolves us from a charge of Gallic chauvinism." The illustrations by French military painter Jean-Baptiste Edouard Detaille 1848-1912 were chosen for "accuracy and authenticity" characteristics for which Detaille's work was known.

___DESCRIPTION: Original quarter olive-green calf and French marbled paper covered boards backstrip lettered in gilt top-edge gilt olive-green endpapers title-page in black and red fifteen illustrations reproduced from engravings sheets printed french fold; Janson type Mohawk Superfine paper quarto size 10 7/8" by 8 1/2" pagination: i-x 1-99 1 colophon limited edition this number 351 of 1600 copies with LEC Monthly Letter slipped in signed by Drew Middleton at the colophon. No jacket spine faintly toned. 1901 Hard Cover. ix 237 pp. The Spanish Dancer being a translation from the original French by Henry L. Williams of Don Caesar de Bazan. By Victor Hugo as dramatically told in the stage play by Adolph D'Ennery and P.S.P. Dumanoir. With a foreword by Glendon Allvine. Pola Negri edition illustrated with scenes from the Paramount Picture. "The Spanish Dancer is a 1923 American silent costume epic starring Pola Negri as a gypsy fortune teller Antonio Moreno as a romantic count and Wallace Beery as the king of Spain. The film was directed by Herbert Brenon and also features a five-year-old Anne Shirley appearing under the name "Dawn O'Day." The film survives today.1 Restored by the EYE Film Institute in the Netherlands the movie was shown at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. on August 5 2012 accompanied by the 1916 Lois Weber film Shoes. There is no indication that this was every properly 'published' as there is no record of it in any holding. Many/most erotica books from this mimeo era were stand-alone books even if written as part of an overarching series. Finding sets is uncommon.and finding a run as large as this is very very scarce.
Paul Hugo Little 1915–1987 was an American writer of pulp fiction and historical novels. Over his career he authored more than 700 historical fiction erotica and romance novels mostly under various pseudonyms. Little averaged a novel every week and a half since 1963 until nearly his death.
Early mimeo sexually explicit series. It is difficult to find these early mimeo examples of sexually explicit prose and for all the usual reasons it is harder still to find complete multi-volume sets. Poorly printed poorly bound and of subject matter that was often disposed of rather than tended to they seldom pass the test of time. This is especially true of these early 13 line per page copies with a relatively small number of examples in various collections. As printed illustration was beyond the technology used these are illustrated with four b/w photographs in each volume. paperback books‎

Unidentified edition.

Excellent small collection of highly original stamped Ex Libris prints by painter and graphic illustrator Karl Hugo Frech Karl Naughty 1883-1945. While Frech's are probably the most notable Slovakian bookplates ever produced they remain almost completely unstudied and unknown. Frech's bookplates received numerous commissions from many important figures of Bratislava formerly Pressburg. Incredibly in bookplate scholarship Frech's name is virtually unrecorded.

Frech was born in Stuttgart Germany. He studied lithography at G.F. Schreiber Art Institute in Esslingen and between 1903 and 1905 he attended the Academy of Applied Arts in Stuttgart where he later worked as an illustrator and graphic artist. In 1914 he married and
moved to Bratislava formerly Pressburger where he spent most of his life. He made his living as a painter and a graphic artist; he was also member of the Pressburger Kunstverein. Although he contributed illustrations to the Pressburger Zeitung newspaper and numerous books his exlbiris designs are particularly prolific due to the occult and esoteric themes and unusual size. While bookplates are generally reflections of the unique eccentricities of collectors the occult themes in the art are reflected of the Occult Revival and metaphysical interest in the Art Nouveau periods. There is scarce literature published in English to support any of FrechÂ’s individual interest in the occult however given the time period and clients it is possible the commissions were specific. The symbolism in the bookplates range from esoteric Hermeticism Eastern philosophies Mesmerism and astrology.

Frech died on 27 July 1945 while trying to escape from a camp for displaced Germans near the Austrian town of Steyr. Sadly many of the books in Dr. FaustusÂ’ personal library assuming with his bookplates were looted and destroyed during World War II. unknown books‎

‎The Custom Body Era.‎

‎New York: Castle Books 1970. Folio gray boards hardcover 232 pp. Very Good with small bookplate to ffep. in a Very Good dust jacket with light edgewear. From dust jacket: In the 1920s and 1930s it was possible to have an autoboile built just as the purchaser wanted it. The quality was of the best unlike the shoddy workmanship most of us accept as normal today. In this earlier period custom-body firms catering to the wealthy existed; their function was to take the chassis of a Lincoln Rolls-Royce or Hispano-Suiza and build for it a body that -- inside and out -- fitted the precise requirements of the owner. The Custom Body Era written by a man who designed many of them himself is the story of the luxurious coachwork of the time and of the magnificent chassis upon which these bodies were mounted. The finest automobiles the world has ever seen were produced during this period. The choice of fine cars was much greater then than now; there were a dozen fine chasses being built in America and there were at least another dozen from abroad. The best of these were fitted with coachwork from a number of fine body builders here and in Europe. This is the first book to receord the history of the expensive automobile and it is the first to be written by someone who participated in the development of automobile design during that period. It includes illustrations never before publishedi n literature intended for the general public. The author has searched through cataqlogues of the time for many of the illustraitons and has himself photographed many of these classic cars now the prized possessions of collectors throughout the world. There are also reproductions of some of his original deisng drawings from the period. Castle Books, (1970). hardcover books‎
