Après la découverte par Stendhal d’une bibliothèque de vieux manuscrits italiens regorgeant de récits violents d'aventures - véridiques - se déroulant dans le cadre de l'Italie de la Renaissance l'auteur rédigea quatre chroniques italiennes : Vittoria Accoramboni Les Cenci La Duchesse de Palliano et L’Abbesse de Castro. Celle-ci fut la première à avoir connu une publication et a pour décor la cité italienne d’Albano. Elle met en scène une tragique histoire sentimentale. Stendhal démontrait au travers de ses Chroniques l’existence de cette énergie de cette fougue de cette vigueur pour lui si présente en Italie et tant absente en France. Alors consul de France à Civita-Vecchia où l'ennui l'accablait la composition des Chroniques avait pour intention de faire revivre l'Italie qu'il aimait celle des passions et de l'égotisme ; et plus encore de tenter d'ainsi le consoler de la platitude de ses contemporains.
