Kipling, Rudyard, Andrew Lycett (ed.)
Kipling and War: From 'Tommy' to 'My Boy Jack'
London: I. B. Tauris 2015. 1st. h/b. Fine as new d/j in protective sleeve. 8vo 230 x 150 / 9"" x 6"". Although Rudyard Kipling never fought he was one of Britiain's foremost observers of and commentators on war. Through his writing on the harsh realities of life as a private and accounts of feats of courage and comradeship during the frontier wars in India 19th century British campaigns in Sudan the Boer Wars and the First World War he became the poet of the common soldier. Although he wrote propaganda for the government in the Boer and First World Wars Kipling was also acerbic in his criticism of military incompetence deeply compassionate towards the victims of war and despairing of the senseless bloodshed that he witnessed. Through his writing the voices of countless soldiers and the guns of many battles echo through the years and place Kipling firmly firmly among the leading practitioners of 19th and 20th century war literature. Kipling, Rudyard
Kipling on the Japanese: An Unpublished Letter Written at the Time of the Russo-Japanese War to William Joshua Harding R. N. 2 September 1903.
Cambridge Massachusetts: Houghton Library 1943. First edition in book form of this previously unpublished letter written by Kipling to William Joshua Harding seeking an army commission for his son John. Octavo original wrappers as issued. One of only seventy-five numbered copies this is number 32. In fine condition. Rare. Kipling's son John was about three years old when this letter was written. Despite his son's short-sightedness Kipling sought to get him an army commission when the First World War broke out in August 1914. John was killed in the Battle of Loos causing his family immense grief and placing a great strain on the marriage as Kipling's wife had strongly opposed his enlisting. Later Kipling wrote of him "I had a boy who came near writing stories about Kangaroos and Queensland pearl-fishers. But another call came and Johnny went to France where the stars are still shining although Johnny's drum has ceased to beat. Houghton Library unknown

Kipling, Rudyard
Kipling Rudyard- ALS Autograph Letter Signed to the Editor of The Daily Express Ralph David Blumenfield
Sussex 1913. Two pages. Written on Kipling’s “Burwash†stationery Bateman’s Burwash Sussex June 21 1913 remarking on Blumenfeld’s treatment at a spa in Contrexeville astonished at his willingness to comply to it praising his cartoonist and encouraging the critical articles about a committee that had been appearing in the Express. “So far I have paid no attention to your yells of discomfort from Contrexeville because I know that the treatment there was good for you. Now I say God help you! I have never drunk waters but once out of pure boredom. I was washed at Vernet-les-Bains. So I too have lived. Somehow the vision of you sitting on a bench from 9 to 5 makes me think of an angry hawk pegged out on a lawn. Why you didn’t go out of your alleged mind puzzles me I’ll see if you have later on. No matter. You needed the swilling and sloshing. Tell us when you are fit to go among friends again I can’t help thinking of you with close-cropped hair & a pallid complexion and we’ll get you down here ere the recurring dinner swallows you. That cartoonist of yours is damn good.†A superb letter by Kipling English short-story writer and poet best remembered for his portrayal of British soldiers in India and for his tales for children. Folded 12mo sheet small clear tape remnant to blanks near fine. unknown
