Duodecimo bound in three-quarters morocco with gilt titles and pictorial tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands all edges gilt marbled endpapers title page vignette. In very good condition inscription to the second free endpaper. First published in 1903 Kipling's The Five Nations included a number of new poems as well as several that had been previously published notably Recessional of 1897. In 1903 the United Kingdom consisted of four nations: England Ireland Scotland and Wales. It was soon suggested that Kipling's "five nations" were the "five free nations of Canada Australia New Zealand South Africa i.e. Cape Colony and 'the islands of the sea' i.e. the British Isles" - all dominated by Britons; and except in the last case by recent settlers. That suggestion was endorsed some one hundred years later. Methuen and Co unknown

<p>Original cloth and gilt rubbed and a little dull some edge-wear including lightly knocked corners front hinge a little loose but binding sound. Front end-paper tanned and prelims foxed as are final pages. No inscriptions. Page edges tanned and foxed sometimes extending into page margins. Lower page edges untrimmed. Some occasional foxing throughout but mostly in margins of text block. 38p. booklist at rear dated July 1903 and also lists printed on all sides of end-papers. Vignette of horse-rider on title page. Follows the first edition first issue in that on page 56 line 9 the name 'David' is printed which was later changed to 'Saul'; also both have the July 1903 booklist appended. Methuen's Colonial Library was described by the publlisher as <em>'A series of copyright books by eminent and popular authors published as far as possible simultaneously with their appearance in England. They are of very handsome appearance being printed on antique paper and bound tastefully in crimson paper or in cloth.' </em></p> Methuen and Co. hardcover
